Walt Disney Studios' The Lion King has gotten off to a roaring start at the domestic box office with a gargantuan $185 million opening weekend, setting the record for biggest July opening ever, topping previous record-holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 ($169.2M in 2011). The film now also holds the record for biggest opening weekend ever for a Disney live-action remake.

Worldwide, the Jon Favreau-directed feature earned another $269.4 million and has now topped $531 million ($185M domestic; $346M foreign) globally, which puts it on course for a likely billion-dollar finish. If it hits the milestone, it will be the third - possibly fourth - Disney title to cross $1 billion this year, joining Marvel's Captain Marvel, Marvel's Avengers: Endgame and maybe Aladdin.

While reviews have been decidedly mixed (54% RT), the audience reception has been leaning considerably more positive as it's earned an impressive "A" CinemaScore.

Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Far From Home finished second with $21 million in its third frame, taking its domestic total to $319.6 million. Worldwide, the critically-acclaimed Jon Watts-directed sequel has now earned over $970.7 million ($319.6M domestic; $651.1M foreign) and is inching closer and closer to becoming the first Spidey film to become a billionaire.

Additionally, in case you missed it, Marvel's Avengers: Endgame has officially topped Avatar to become the highest-grossing movie of all-time globally with a jaw-dropping $2,790,216,193 haul.

This movie was alright. I'm disappointed it was 99% the same as the classic. I feel like people over exaggerated the whole "uncanny valley/weird look" of realistic animals talking. The songs in this one lacked more emotion compared to the classic. Timon and Pumba were the standouts for me. Oh and Beyonce, for all the wrong reasons.

@TexasAvenger - I think I'll say the songs have different emotions, not that they lack emotions.

Take "I Just Can't Wait to be King" for instance. The kid playing young Simba sounds exactly the same as the original animation, but John Oliver's Zazu sounds less annoyed and more like he's joining in on the fun.

@DnA - Yeah probably. That's a good point. Zazu definitely wasn't as uptight as the first one, which I think is a good change.

"I Just Can't Wait to be King" sounded good tho. I liked young Simba's voice actor the most.

Disney itself will have enough billion dollar films to break the record for most billion dollar films released in a single year. Captain Marvel, Endgame, Aladdin, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Frozen 2 and Star Wars.

Doubt I'm gonna check this out in theatres, but The Lion King: The Gift is a great album

Lion King was supposed to challenge Endgame for top grossing movie, right?

@StarWarsFan7 - Nothing is going to challenge Endgame for a while.

@StarWarsFan7 - Nobody thought that after Endgame came out and made what it made.

@TheUnworthyThor - oh, okay. I recall reading one article and I thought it was a wild prediction. Didn’t know projections changed. But Disney is still winning big time.

Every other studio looks to be embarrassed when the top ten box office movies of 2019 are completely dominated by Disney.
