Following a disappointing box office run, Pixar's Lightyear will make its Disney+ debut on August 3, less than two months after the film released in theaters. The sci-fi action adventure mustered only $213 million globally.

Director Angus MacLane, in a statement accompanying today's announcement, expressed excitement that the film will be heading to Disney's streaming service, as it will give more fans a chance to experience the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear.

"Lightyear looks amazing on the big screen, of course, but we are so excited to bring it to Disney+," said MacLane. "We devoted years of our lives to this film and we are so proud of it. We want to share it with as many people as possible. Disney+ not only gives more fans an opportunity to see 'Lightyear,' it gives us all the means to see it again and again."

Although Pixar's Toy Story movies are some of the studio's most successful films, Lightyear failed to generate the same type of excitement. The film came under a bit of fire for its inclusion of a same-sex kiss, causing it to be banned in multiple countries, while Disney has also been in the crosshairs of multiple conservative movements for its stance on LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Controversy aside, it's possible that the plot of Lightyear was the root of its dismal box office numbers. Although the film is titled after the beloved Toy Story character, it's not actually about the toy itself. Instead, it's an origin story of the hero who inspired the toy. Even though this seemed pretty clear based on the trailers and press announcements for Lightyear, many were still confused and upset that Buzz was voiced by Chris Evans and not Tim Allen.

In our review of the film, Josh Wilding called it "the best animated movie of the year and a dazzling sci-fi escapade with a performance from Chris Evans that will leave you buzzing." If his glowing review of the film wasn't enough to convince you to see Lightyear in theaters, you'll soon be able to watch it from the comfort of your home through Disney+.

Lightyear was directed by Angus MacLane. The film stars Chris Evans as the accomplished Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, Uzo Aduba as his commander and best friend Alisha Hawthorne and Peter Sohn as Sox. Voicing the Junior Zap Patrol's Izzy Hawthorne, Mo Morrison, and Darby Steel are Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi and Dale Soules, respectively.

Truly there hasn't been a better, more impactful film to grace my corneas. After watching the brilliance of the sandwich scene, the rest of cinema is now pointless as they will never live up to these glorious heights. Art has transformed people.

@Origame - but does it pass the Scorsese and Coppola Cinema test? Cause the gods of cinema are angry at hollywood's theme park movies!

@supermanrex - It does because unlike MCU machine made films that come out every year, pointless spin offs that come out every 2 - 3 years is fine because its not oversatured. More love and care is put into Lightyear's vfx than Shang Chi or any D+ show.

@mastakilla39 - MCU is not machine made films. i mean the whole reason people get pissed at these films is they are straying sometimes from the formula. Thor movies took a complete tone overhaul after the second movie for example. Guardians of the galaxy was a tone shift from the established factory mandate. ms marvel complete tone shift as it focused on family development and the gravitas of world history events in favor of shoving more pow zoom lights and action each episode. ms marvel was equal superhero film, documentary style education. she hulk is going down the road of half hour comedic series. wanda vision started the horror intrigue and dr strange 2 went full horror. so its not bland machine production. they dip in sci fi, horror, documentary, comedic, romance and love, action adventure etc. Feige has accomplished what he has set out to do and that is make each film have its own unique flavor to it.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939

Not why it flopped. Didn’t help but it’s definitely not the why.

@regularmovieguy - it bombed because they made a movie for absolutely no-one, that not a single soul asked for, all right after disney had spent years curating pixar into a streaming-only entity and sold off the back of chris evans - a man with no discernible box office pull at all. strange to see people try to turn it into a culture war thing, when it feels more like audiences being less willing to accept disney’s mediocre slop haha
edit: even weirder since disney’s a deeply, deeply conservative company that pats itself on the back for giving the bare minimum lip service to minority groups haha

There really is a laundry list of reasons why Lightyear is a mega bomb. Almost feels like a 200 mil Disney Jr. concept. And yeah Disney releasing Pixar movies direct to Disney+ isn’t going to do them any immediate favors. You’re almost training your audience to just stay at home.

disney blaming anyone but themselves after single handedly devaluing one of their biggest brands at the alter of streaming:

@regularmovieguy - Shuffling stuff off to D+ was pretty much a certainty given the covid realities. No one much was going to theaters much, ESPECIALLY families with kids. Parents were absolutely going bonkers.

The only other choice would have been to sit on those films for a couple of years which was impractical. There is too much competition in the kid films genre for that. Can you imagine the industry rage had Encanto, Turning Red, and the others all been released to theaters this summer ?

Simply put there was no good choice.

Between this and Prey, I think I'll watching Prey that weekend. Might give this a watch later though, just after the general response to it I'm not feeling like I should watch this ASAP

My grandkids like toy story but had no interest in light year. Wasn’t just a gay kiss or evans spouting off like a jackass that killed the profits alone, they didn’t make an appealing movie for kids.

I feel having subpar products shoved onto your streaming service actively damages your streaming service.

Bombed at the BO. So will every other movie that tries to push an agenda. Trust me when I say the majority of Americans are tired of it.

@BringFFtoMCU - it bombed because it was confusing and nobody cared and Pixar had been routinely relegated to streaming and a million reasons unrelated to your snowflake bullshit you weak, embarrassing man

@The72nd - There may have been other reasons, but if you think the same sex key wasn't one of them you are naive. Not every parent is comfortable letting their kids watching that.
