DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Featurette Reveals Surprising New Black Bolt Detail

A new behind-the-scenes featurette with the home media release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has revealed a surprising detail about Anson Mount's Black Bolt...

When the (former) Sorcerer Supreme and America Chavez travelled to the 838 Universe in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, they encountered a group of Multiversal heroes(?) known as The Illuminati. The Scarlet Witch ultimately ended up making short work of all but one of them (Mordo escaped), but they remain one of the most talked-about aspects of the sequel despite only appearing in a couple of scenes.

One of the more surprising additions (for those who avoided the leaks, at least), was Black Bolt, with Anson Mount reprising his role from the now defunct Inhumans TV series. The powerful Inhuman leader met arguably the most brutal end out of all of his teammates, but managed to make quite an impression thanks to his comic-accurate costume (and hilariously gruesome death).

Now, thanks to a new "Constructing the Multiverse" featurette that's included on the movie's home media release, it's come to light that Black Bolt's outfit was entirely CGI!

Several shots in the featurette show Mount wearing a full mo-cap suit, while most of his Illuminati castmates (there's no sign of John Krasinski as Reed Richards) appear to be in practical get-ups. Marvel Studios movies often contain examples of slightly dodgy VFX, but Black Bolt's costume looks pretty damn flawless.

Doctor Strange, Multiverse, Black Bolt, Sam Raimi

As for why this particular suit was a CG creation, it's possible Mount joined the production later than the others and the wardrobe department simply didn't have time to put something practical together.

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.

The Doctor Strange sequel is now streaming on Disney+.

Ok, credit where it's due, that was some good CGI right there. The best CGI is when you don't even know there is CGI involved.

I still prefer practical with cgi enhancement but honestly I couldn't tell. Props

@bobevanz - same here. Also with locations. I know Eternals isn't well received, but it felt refreshing to see characters stand around actual, distinct locations

It's cool that they manage to make a convincing CGI suit. Same with the time-travel suits in Endgame, I couldn't tell it was CGI (only after it was pointed out)

All the budget went to the suit that's why Strange gets a snapchat filter third eye

yeah i had a feeling it was cgi

if we get main universe black bolt, suit will either be cgi or look very different, cause yeah the material it imitated just would not look like that in a practical suit

I love and miss acting (I was a theater major at school, concentration on acting). Taking on a role like that where you can't or don't speak I've always found rather intriguing. Even if it was only several minutes, it's awesome he got this brief redemption from the show.

Yeah no, the suit definitely looked fake in a lot of aspects, the way the mask rests on his face being one of them. But it wasn't super noticeable.

Now any costume is doable, there is no excuse anymore. Full body and head skin tight outfit with the pit wings and the tuning fork... Plus full range of motion and natural comfort. We are ready for the X-Men

Oh wow. Props. The suit looked practical. I'd never had known without this article.

I thought it may have been a baggy practical suit on set (like Black Panther and Spider-Man's), but made to look skin tight in post. Crazy that its all CG.

Surprised anyone thought he was wearing an actual costume. It was clearly CGI. The body was done very well but the mask, mostly the neck and eye area was done poorly.

Never felt he was a good fit for BlackBolt. I’m not a huge Vin Diesel fan, but he has the look more than Mount does. Anyway, it was a nice throw away. Hopefully we get a revamped/rebooted BlackBolt and fam down the road.

Never would've guessed. It looked so practical, especially the cowl.

I always thought that Ryan Reynolds's green lantern suit is realistic and feel organic eventhough it is CGI.

Reed’s Fantastic Four suit is also very likely 100% cgi. Both Mount and Krasinski were added to the movie in reshoots so there probably just wasn’t time for the costume department to make anything.
