I liked ‘Captain America’ for what it was, but had a few issues with it too, in particular the over-emphasis on Hydra (I would’ve preferred Nazi’s to be the main villains and the Red Skull’s followers to create Hydra to carry on his legacy for sequels) and the less grounded approach taken with it, to me it just felt like a bit of a cop out and this was Marvel's way of keeping things PG.
But whatever the film was entertaining so I guess I’m just nit-picking.
Well just got to mention, with my cast its not based on an origin story, but for a more established Captain America who’s been around for a while. This is me just nitpicking here again, but I'm kind of iffy about all the Avengers being different ages, it actually a lot more realistic that way, but in particular with Captain America and Iron Man, they have a sibling relationship and the extreme age difference between Evans and Downey is something that just keeps sticking out to me.
Steve Rogers/Captain America: Too frail to serve during WWII, Steve Rogers bravely volunteered to receive the experimental Super-Soldier Serum which transformed him physically, making him the pinnacle of human physical potential. Fighting Nazi's during the war and all matter of villainy since, Captain America is the Sentinel of Liberty.
Aaron Eckhart: He’s a great actor and would be perfect for an older Cap. He’s thrown out a lot of great performances in films like ‘The Dark Knight’ and even ‘Battle LA.’ The fact that he’s charismatic and has a strong and powerful presence to him also helps making him a good candidate for the role.
James ‘Bucky’ Barnes: Captain America's partner Bucky was believed dead near the end of WWII. However, he was found by the Soviet Union and forcibly turned into their super soldier. He became the Winter Soldier until breaking free and re-joining Captain America.
Jake Gyllenhaal: A few years ago he was my prime candidate for an older Spider-Man, but I feel Gyllenhaal’s matured more as an actor and with great performances in films like ‘Jarhead’ and ‘Source Code’ I think he can handle the duality and darker nature of the character well.
General Nick Fury: Nick Fury served in WWII alongside Captain America. He's served as an agent of as well as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury is one of the greatest strategic minds alive, a master of espionage, and a born leader.
Samuel L. Jackson: I’ve yet to be impressed by him as Nick Fury, but he’s a great actor too and has that badass presence needed for the role, plus as the ‘Ultimate Marvel’ version was based of him it just makes sense for him to play the part.
Agent Sharon Carter: Inspired by the tales of Captain America and her aunt Peggy, Sharon Carter decided to become an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., eventually meeting the legend and becoming one of the Captain’s closest allies and lover.
Tricia Helfer: She’s a pretty good actress and is good at handling both action and drama, the fact that she is also a fanboy favoured actress doesn’t hurt either.
Agent Sam Wilson/the Falcon: Samuel Wilson was a member of the armed forces but retired to pursue a scientific interest, serving later under General Nick Fury utilising a pair of metal wings, his combat prowess and tactical experience as a partner to Captain America.
Morris Chestnut: I’ve heard his name thrown about for a lot of different comic book roles, but none of them seemed right to me. With the Falcon, I think Chestnut has what it takes to deliver a credible and updated take to the role.
Agent Clint Barton/Hawkeye: Trained by criminals, inspired by heroes, Clint Barton has live many lives, from a troubled youth to special ops soldier, only to be moulded into one of the greatest super-heroes on Earth. While he has been known by many names, the world knows him best as Hawkeye, Earth's mightiest marksman.
Logan Marshall Green: He’s a pretty good actor, with solid performances in ‘Devil’ and ‘Dark Blue’ Green is definitely a talented actor, but despite that he also has that maverick charm needed for the part.
Agent Natasha Romanova/Black Widow: Former KGB agent Natasha Romanova, known as the Black Widow, is one of the greatest spies ever to live and is one of the best agents S.H.I.E.L.D. has ever had as well as being a long-time member of the Avengers.
Malin Akerman: To me Scarlett Johansson isn’t right for the role, and Akerman has proven herself capable of handling both action and drama well before, so I’d prefer to see her in the part.
James ‘Logan’ Howlett/Wolverine: A long-lived mutant with the rage of a beast and the soul of a samurai, James "Logan" Howlett's past is filled with blood, war, and betrayal. Possessing an accelerated healing factor, enhanced senses, and bone claws that along with his skeleton are coated in adamantium, Wolverine is the ultimate weapon.
Tom Hardy: He’s a great actor and would be perfect for Wolverine. He’s thrown out a lot of great performances in films like ‘Bronson’ and ‘Warrior.’ My only criticism is he may appear too young for the role, but then again if they could make Tom Cruise look old in ‘Collateral’ I doubt adding a few years to Hardy’s appearance would be so difficult.
Johann Schmidt/the Red Skull: A long-time enemy of Captain America, Johann Schmidt is a proud Nazi general and the embodiment of evil, fear, and horror. He is known as the ruthless Red Skull.
Ralph Fiennes: Another very great actor. He can play intimidating psychopaths without any problems and has this very cold look to him that just leaves you feeling rattled. With rumours of Hugo Weaving not wanting to return to the role, Fiennes would be an ideal replacement.
Dr Arnim Zola: Arnim Zola is a brilliant and disturbed scientist. He is able to clone bodies for people and transfer their brain patterns to the new bodies. He is a frequent foe of Captain America.
Jarred Harris: He’s a pretty good actor, I haven’t seen him in much, but I’ve enjoyed his work on ‘Mad Men’ and am looking forward to his role as Moriarty in the upcoming ‘Sherlock Holmes’ sequel. I just think he has that mad scientist vibe going for him I guess.
Baron Heinrich Zemo: Baron Heinrich was one of the top enforcers during the Nazi reign and the Red Skull’s right hand man. Both a man of intellect and brutality, Heinrich was a force to be reckoned with.
Christoph Waltz: He’s a great actor and deserves a shot at a comic book movie. He’s done some good work, most notably in ‘Inglorious Bastards.’ The fact that he’s got a knack for playing intelligent villains only further makes him an ideal candidate for the role.
Baron Helmut Zemo: When his father Heinrich died in battle Helmut Zemo assumed the family business as his birth right, leading to his frequent conflicts with Captain America and his allies.
Michael Fassbender: Forgetting ‘First Class’ I’d love to see Fassbender in this role; it was due to his work in ‘Blood Creek’ and ‘Inglorious Bastards’ that made me think he was ideal for the role, plus he also looks slightly like Waltz so that does help too.
Anthony Masters/Taskmaster: A villain of the Avengers with the ability to copy the physical characteristics of anyone he observes. He has used these skills as a teacher to many super villains, henchmen, and even some heroes.
Jason Statham: He’s actually a pretty decent dramatic actor, as seen in ‘The Bank Job’ and ‘Blitz,’ but with his martial arts skills he’s an ideal candidate for the role and could definitely do it justice.
Brock Rumlow/Crossbones: Gang member, mercenary, agent of the Red Skull, all of these things can describe a part of Brock Rumlow's life. None of these descriptions fit as well as this one: Crossbones.
Dominic Purcell: From his work on ‘Prison Break’ I think he could do this role justice, I haven’t seen him in much else, but with a role like this it’ll hardly be a stretch for him.
Frank Simpson/Scourge: Frank Simpson was the U.S. Government's most succesful replacement for Steve Rogers during the war in Vietnam. However the stress on Simpson's body resulted in parts being replaced with cybernetic enhancements. He was dropped in the jungle for 5 years left on his own. Finally he disappeared one day, returning years later to wage war on the system that created him.
Kevin Durand: He often plays villains due to his imposing size, but despite that he’s a pretty decent actor too and could definitely do well as a dark counterpart to Captain America.
