Captain America: Freedom is Not Free

Captain America: Freedom is Not Free

A tribute to one of my all-time favorite heroes, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America!

With all of the excitement and controversy surrounding director Joe Johnston's The First Avenger: Captain America, I decided that now was the time to post my first fan art piece, a tribute I did to Captain America about two years ago.

The title is "Freedom is Not Free," a classic American slogan that serves as a reminder that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness go hand-in-hand with courage, determination and sacrifice.

"Freedom is Not Free" 1
This is the first image that I completed, though it's not the original design. Cap is looking out, at the viewer, imploring them to realize the slogan is true. It's less a flag-waving call-to-arms than a sober reminder of the price that real heroes have to pay to safeguard America.

"Freedom is Not Free" 2
This image was completed second, but it was my original concept. It's Cap, behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied territory, pausing to plant the flag after liberating a concentration camp (note the graphiti).

"Freedom is Not Free" 2
This is a variation that incorporates rotoscoped images from the war in four blocks that form the negative of a swastika over the image.

I welcome your comments.

Very nicely done @ BRENT!

These are from your Deviant Art page right!?

You have a gift, great stuff, thumbs up dude!

Hopefully CAP's costume will be darker in tone just like the last two pic's for the movie!

These would make great posters, hey you ever thought about doing the Red Skull?

Fan-tastic work Brent!

I like your style!

These are wonderful
and absolutely true!
Freedom is not handed
to us, we must fight for
it! Here's to the guys
who have fought for us
which includes my dad,
2-uncles and nephew!
I salute them all and I
salute you Mr. Sprecher
for these great reminders!

That's why Captain America
is so important to me cuz
he symbolizes the universal
forever-on-going fight for
freedom!

Great pieces of art Brent, they're really awesome. I can't stand that phrase though. To me personally it only reinforces America's commercialism and in your face attitude, but that's just me.

@LEEE, Anil, teabag, DDD, Ryden, joby: Thanks, I really appreciate it!

@LEEE: Good suggestion! Now that you bring it up, I don't think I've ever done a solo piece dedicated to a villain before...

@teabag: Keep that stiff upper lip for us, teabag!

@DDD: Yes, my family has a long history of service. Fortunately for me, I picked up a pen instead of a gun...

@Ryden: Interesting take on it. While some may have tried to co-opt the phrase for their own agendas, I actually took it from a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr.
