Several years ago, Marvel Studios decided to sell most of their film rights to other companies such as Fox, Sony, Universal, and even companies like Syfy, who brought you the infamous ManThing film. But after hits such as X-Men, Spiderman, and Blade were released, Marvel Studios began getting the rights back to all of their characters. However, some companies wouldn't dare give back the rights due to the money people will pay to see they're heroes on the silver screen. If Fox doesn't begin production on a Daredevil reboot REAL soon, the movie rights revert back to Marvel Studios. Fox is also working on a Fantastic Four reboot in order to keep the rights to that franchise. Marvel made a offer with Fox, that if they give Marvel Silver Surfer and Galactus, they will give them more time to do Daredevil. Fox, however refused. I am not a big fan of the refusal. And I will explain why as I give the reasons why the rights to Fantastic Four should revert back to Marvel, as well as my opinion on what should happen with Daredevil.

DR. DOOM:

The first reason Marvel Studios should own Fantastic Four is because of Dr. Doom. What all three of the past Fantastic Four movies (counting the 1994 unreleased film which can be viewed at this URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C93GxNVDog8&feature=youtube_gdata_player) failed to do was do Dr. Doom justice (no pun intended). In the comics, Dr. Doom, was a powerful monarch with high intelligence and was a dangerous man who wore a metal suit as armor and also to hide his scars. In the movies (mainly the 2005-2007 dualogy) he wears the suit for no apparent reason and it seems like a coincidence that the suit could deflect bullets in the 2005 film and in both of them, as well as the 1994 film, he is taken down very easily by the FF. Doom has the potential to be a great on screen villain, and a perfect villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I would love to see him go against The Avengers on film.

SILVER SURFER:

The second reason is because of the Silver Surfer. When I first read about Marvel Studios' offer to Fox, my mood was "Yes!" When I read about Fox's denial, my mood was "D**mit." Partly because (I'll explain more in the next reason, THE GENRE OF THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE) Silver Surfer is his OWN superhero. I don't know why Fox feels the need to constantly include him in FF movies. And I'm pretty sure they're planning on including him in future sequels of their FF reboot that they are attempting to produce because of their denial. Silver Surfer needs a stand alone movie. Plus, I really don't want Fox to ruin Galactus again. If you thought Parallax sucked in last years Green Lantern film, you should see Galactus in FF: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. Galactus, in my opinion, needs to be done by people who are good at making films, because it is hard to do a giant planet eating man in a purple hat, but Marvel Studios knows how to adapt their movies.

THE GENRE OF THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE:

Fantastic Four fits the Marvel Cinematic Universe almost perfectly. With Dr. Doom as a villain, themes of space and cosmic energies, in the comics, The Thing is Hulk-sized and if I am not mistaken, the Fantastic Four joins the Avengers in the comics (Thing and Hulk. Perfect fight right there. Also a perfect team-up), Reed Richards as a scientist (he could work on science related things with Ant-Man, and other scientists. Invent things with Stark. Work for SHEILD. ETC.). So many possibilities. And a Marvel Studios Silver Surfer film would be the next best thing. Not only does does it have space and all the cosmic elements of the story, but Galactus. Another perfect villain for The Avengers to face. And, we would finally see the Surfer in his own stand alone movie (by stand alone, I mean its HIS movie, not someone else's, such as the Fantastic Four's. If its by Marvel Studios, of course its in the MCU).

TOO MANY 2014 MARVEL FILMS:

If Fox has their way, then Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spiderman 2, Guardians Of The Galaxy, X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and Ant-Man all are released in 2014. If either the rights to FF or DD revert back to Marvel, it will reduce the amount of films of that year. I, personally, hope Avengers 2 is released in 2016, and Ant-Man is delayed to 2015 (or release them both in 2015) because that's, in my opinion, too many for one year. I don't know how I would keep up with ALL of them.

SHOULD DAREDEVIL GO BACK TO MARVEL STUDIOS?

I, personally, hope Daredevil's film rights stay at Fox, because I would like to see a darker, grittyer, possibly even rated R version of Daredevil, and I doubt Marvel Studios would do that. I mean, my favorite Marvel hero is The Punisher, an antihero, and now that his rights are back at Marvel Studios, I doubt we'll be seeing him in film again anytime soon, and if we do, its probably going to be PG-13 which, in my opinion, would suck for a Punisher film. If the Daredevil rights go back to Marvel, we probably won't see him in a while either. I personally think it would be cool if there was a Marvel Knights side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe where the darker, lesser known heroes would be at, and not necessarily lead up to the next Avengers film, kind of like what other Studios did with Punisher: War Zone and Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, but that is unlikely to happen.

I'm thinking BattlinMurdock might have something to say about this one, heh.

I agree with you though. Because the Fantastic Four find themselves branching out far more often than just about every superhero team, it makes sense that they would be included in the MCU. I'm really not dying for a Fantastic Four movie, though.

As much as I would like to see Josh Trank's take —I agree — Fantastic Four has to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Daredevil can stay at 20th Century Fox, lol :P

Question: Does Marvel Studios actually own the Marvel Knights category or is that for any of the studios who own any rights to Marvel characters { FOX, Sony, etc } to release darker toned films?

Darkknight2149 - 8/9/2012, 12:45 AM
@Bane2099 I think its like the regular Marvel logo, where any studio can use it, even if its not from Marvel Studios, themselves. Because Punisher: War Zone and Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance are the only two films so far to use it and they were from two completely different companies. Punisher was from Lionsgate and Ghost Rider was from Sony.

You didn´t give any legal reasons, so this editorial should be titled "Why I wish The Fantastic Four Rights Reverted Back To Marvel Studios"

and not

of course i would love to see the fantastic four,dr.doom, silver surfer & galactus back where they belong.

just imagine how great daredevil, punisher & blade would be to the marvel cinematic universe.

those three could be a way to do more adult movie storylines but still connected to the marvel cinematic universe by say news reports but they wouldn't show up in the avengers.

I do not see Fox ever trying to do what Marvel has done, and will only plan in trilogy strategies, not ongoing Bond or Marvel style.

As much as I love the FF, Marvel has so much in their arsenal as it is, maybe to much. With Spidey and FF owned by other studios, it is allowing Marvel to get some charactors out there that not long ago would never have been considered for big screen treatment (looking at you Rocket Raccoon). I would love to see Fox treat FF more like a Marvel Studios movie, but am not certain I would like to see Marvel get the FF back into their fold.

The FF have a rich enough history to support dozens of movies without stepping on Marvel's toes, and it wouldn't be a bad idea for Marvel to 'lend' a few minor properties they never intend to use (Thunderstrike or any of the New Warriors will probably never be seen, but could help fillout a Galactus attacks scene) to help boost it (Disney/marvel still get a portion of that Fox FF money). That's my avoiding getting to work two cents.

Point taken about the ratings but the reason I put I want to be rated R is because I would like to see darker, mature, more realistic violence. I don't want a movie where someone gets something as simple as a papercut and streams of blood pour everywhere.

@every one Sorry but I don't think you guys have read possibly one of the best mainstream super hero comic books thats currently on the shelf's known as Daredevil, its written by a fantastic writer called Mark Waid, it neither has drugs, prostitution or the mob. It has Matt Murdock attending parties wearing a t-shirt, that claims he isn't Dardevil. SO bascily this notion that Daredevil wouldn't fit in to the MCU's tone is [frick]ing narrow minded, so is the notion that it HAS to be R rated, no it doesn't the book proves that. It has to be whatever rating the script demands it to be. It isn't campy or dark and depressing, it has the perfect tone. That said would I love to see Born Again and other darker stories be adapted [frick] yes.

You can do dark and gritty with out rating, pretty sure Nolans movies proved that. Again very narrow minded thinking. Anyways decent write up good job.

@AcidicHeart

You are a stupid troll who has no idea what a good movie is. You say CA:TFA, Thor and Iron Man 2 were good? LOL! I can only laugh about your embarrasing idioty. You are on of those Die Hard Marvelites who swallow the last drop of semen out of Kevin Feiges wiener.

The stupid troll calling someone a stupid troll, that is funny. And managing to spell 'idiocy' wrong in the process, PuyGuy, you really suck.

@PuyGuy I, the writer of this article, don't want EVERY property to go back to Marvel. I would hate to see Ghost Rider, Spiderman, and X-Men go back to Marvel Studios and get rebooted (in Spidermans case, for the second time). I also hate the fact that Punisher is back at Marvel. I do, however, want Fantastic Four to revert.

Oh Christ.

Listen up folks:
Punisher is the only hero that needs to be R. If DD were PG-13 I'd be elated.
Why? He'd get more popular.
Who cares about HARD R ratings. Not me.
That's for sure. A well made PG-13 (Look at Nolan folks) is better than a gut-filled bad-mouthed R.
Nolan had the chance to make TDK an R rated film with all the violence that Joker does. But he didn't.
He did it well

Fox should have taken the offer. If they let Marvel Studios use some FF characters, that would have opened the doors to have Fox be able to do movies in the MCU and I'm sure Marvel would have been more than happy to consult with them to make sure it's done right. Maybe even have a joint venture/ co-finance situation.

But the dumbass Execs at Fox couldn't see the forest through the trees and cut off their noses to spite them.

"so you're okay with yet another mediocre Wolverine movie due to fear of overcrowding at Marvel?" What about last years X-Men: First Class? I don't know about you, but I thought that one was good. True X-Men: Origins: Wolverine sucked, but I would prefer X-Men stay at Fox, especially with a sequel to First Class set to be released 2014. However, I'd prefer most properties and characters back at Marvel. A random example, would be the villain Mephisto, who is owned by Sony due to him villainizing in both of the Ghost Rider films.
