BOX OFFICE: Here's How Much Fox Are Likely To Lose On FANTASTIC FOUR

If you're one of the people hoping that Fox are going to throw in the towel and hand the rights to the Fantastic Four back to Marvel, then this news will probably make you very happy indeed! One box office analyst has worked out how much the reboot is likely to lose, and it's a lot...

Fantastic Four earned even less than expected this weekend with $25.7 million, but that's not the worst news for Fox today. The $120 million movie (that doesn't include the tens of millions spent on marketing) is likely to be one of 2015's biggest flops as it will likely lose as much as $60 million for the studio. That's one hell of a hit, and it's hard to imagine them wanting to risk moving ahead with a sequel based on these numbers. An analyst tells The Hollywood Reporter that Fantastic Four amounts to, "a negative start to Fox's already cautious forecast for a $200 million year-over-year decline in studio segment profits in fiscal year 2016." With a horrendous C- CinemaScore - worse even than Batman and Robin - Fantastic Four has been mauled by critics and even disowned by its director, so none of this should really come as too much of a surprise. Have you seen the movie?

Most people here don't know what a "Write-Off" is, so why don't you explain to them, Josh. It's a segment we'll call "Terminating Terms with Iron Maneo."

Maybe I'm a bit retarded, but what does it mean by 60 million write off? As in they lose 60 million on the film? If that's the case then that would be hilarious and would pretty much ensure the rights going back to Marvel.

Expect to see Blomkamp's Alien 5 fast-tracked.

FOX needs money!

Universal is literally a god right now with the year they're having.

ScarletWarlock proves my point.

BTW, you shouldn't feel retarded for not knowing what a "Write-Off" is because it's not a part of the common vernacular.

Could you possibly present an explanation or anyone who is willing to do so, if it is too difficult I understand, it isn't a big deal, I just want to know what Josh is trying to illustrate with the article more than anything, because the inclusion of "write off" without knowing what it means doesn't provide me with much context.

@ScarletWarlock

Your initial guess was pretty much spot-on. If over-simplified slightly.

It's amazing that we live in a world where a superhero film can still be produced for a loss after all the mega success they've had. Even the bad ones.

Now when do we get some analyst's estimate about how much Josh earned with all those FantFourStic articles?

If I'm Marvel, I offer Fox $400-500 million for the rights back.

Fox can claim financial victory, and Marvel can regain control of its First Family -- not to mention all the associated IP.

I'm probably the only person on this site who doesn't ever read reviews before seeing a movie. Never read a movie review in my life and never will. I go into all movies bias free.

So, with the marketing budget, FF cost around $150 million. It earned about $25 million and probably won't make more than twice that, total. I'm no mathematician, but I do know that 100 mil minus 50 mil isn't 60 mil. Looks like about a 100 mil. loss. Ouch!

Fox might be losing out big-time, but Josh is winning with the amount of FF articles....again and again and again and again....I can just imagine him manical laughing with Kevin Feige in a secret base somewhere

That's too much for a very damaged property, but then again, their rogue gallery may be worth it.

Given a $60 million loss, it would be incumbent on Fox to at least attempt to salvage something from this franchise. Given Marvel's track record and knowledge of the characters and how best to use them/showcase them. It is a business case to be made by management to the board. Given the state of the franchise which at this moment stands at zero, prudent businesspeople will explore every option. At this moment, a partnership/joint venture agreement with Marvel would be a prudent move.

Whoever said 500 million for FF is ridiculous way off. Thats 1/8 of the entire amount disney paid for marvel! That much for a tainted property? NO WAY!

At this point, I'd only want the rights back at Marvel so they can have access to the likes of Galactus and Silver Surfer.

I start to wonder where's @MarvelMainEvent who was in EVERY Ant-Man article to say the movie wasn't box office successful and making all sort of math to prove that a movie needs to make at least twice the budget.

Everyone is a bandwagoneer. ..im sorry, but I finally sat through thjs movie today with my daughter, and by no means is it as bad as you all said it is...the best way I can describe it is abbreviated, but Fox has every right to believe in this property, if it wasnt for the wave of leading up to bad press, and pool of sharks ready to make it the biggest flop, this movie would have done my better...people are saying its worse that Electra? Come on, this movie is better than the first Cap at least...they clearly jumped the shark, panicked and cut it too short, but thus version has potential, its a shame all of you ha e jumped om the failure coattails amd sunk this film becsuse thats what reviewers want yku to do, they are the ones getting paid in thjs deal via clicks...its a bigger story to call it a flop than to recognize what it gets right...had everyone not jumped like thjs, Thu film would ha e performed...all of you are just programmed, good job...its not the best, but you have all supported much worse...shame on you

I still haven't seen Fantastic Four yet, but I'd imagine my reaction would be the same as last night, after watching True Detective.
