Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige Recently Met With Noah Hawley; Is There Still Hope For His DOCTOR DOOM Film?

Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, most assumed that films like Gambit were officially dead in the water. However, it now seems that one of Fox’s Marvel projects is still clinging to life.

While discussing the upcoming third and final season of FX’s Legion with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Noah Hawley revealed that he recently had a meeting with the head of Marvel Studios and provided an interesting update on the status of his Doctor Doom film.

“I did sit down with [Marvel Studios' president] Kevin Feige recently and I said that I look at myself as sort of the Marvel R&D department.” Hawley said, shedding some light on what their meeting was about. “I know the genre can do all of these amazing things that [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] is doing, but my feeling is, what else can we do with it? Can we make it surreal? Can we make it musical? Not as a gimmick, but all of these techniques are about putting you into the subjective experience of these characters.”

After explaining that he and Feige talked about the entire comic book movie genre, the Lucy in the Sky director went on to reveal that he is still having conversations about making a Doctor Doom movie.

“I wrote a script about Doctor Doom, an antihero story I really like, and we're still talking about making it. I'm trying to get out from under this movie I made and this last season of Legion, and Fargo is coming back up… but for better or worse, these are the stories we want to hear right now.”

Although Hawley didn’t explicitly say that his meeting with Kevin Feige was about Doctor Doom, it’s hard to imagine that the iconic Fantastic Four villain didn’t at least come up during their discussion, especially since Feige already expressed interest in his script.

What do you folks think? Do you want to see Hawley bring the big bad to the big screen? To share your thoughts, leave a comment below.

“I wrote a script about Doctor Doom, an antihero story...”

And just like that, you lost me. At the best of times, Doom is an anti-villain, but he’s no anti-hero, and anybody that has any intention of protraying him as such has no business touching Doom cinematically.

@PlusUltra - Well hold on there, buckaroo. Lets not be too quick to jump on the "no anti-hero" train.

The PERFECT intro movie to Doctor Doom in the MCU is an adaptation of the mini-series Books of Doom.

In that, we see Doom as a child born in Latveria and oppressed by the king of the country at the time. His mother ends up being killed for being a "witch" and his father gets hunted down because he was a doctor and was not able to cure the King's wife's incurable disease.

So Doom's family was handed a raw deal.

Long story short, Doom went to America, went to college, met Reed Richards briefly, but used the college's resources to build his first Doombots and technological weapons. The US government eventually brought him in to build more weapons for them, but he ended fleeing the country after he caused a huge explosion that disfigured his face.

He then left America and went back to Latveria with an army of Doom bots and liberated the country and became their new king.

Now, we know he turned into a pretty cruel ruler, but that initial origin story is DEFINITELY an anti-hero story.

Also, just a side note, I find it pretty great that at one point in comics Reed Richards looked through a ton of different alternate realities and the only one that had an earth that was 100% peaceful was one ruled by Dr Doom...

@Catmanlives - Books of Doom is one of my favorites :)

And it just so happens to fit the MCU perfectly as his origin.

@CorndogBurglar - Dude Marvel needs to give you a job lol. I want to hear more. I would watch the shit out of this on the big screen. I knew a little bit of Doom but not the Reed Richards alternative reality but that sees a peaceful Earth only ruled by Doom.

@PlusUltra - Well, what if he's using the term "anti-hero" loosely? Also, if you have duel leads, like they did in "Silence of the Lambs" you can get away with making at least one of them pretty evil.

@CorndogBurglar - I don't think I can handle a childhood coming of age origin story.
Catmanlives

@CorndogBurglar - I was excited when his description of the script was basically Book of Doom so if it happens that will be at least the template for the movie.

@CorndogBurglar - then in that respect Hitler would be an anti-hero too

Ryguy88 - 6/25/2019, 3:25 PM
@RocknRolla - come on now. No one is saying death camps are part of being an anti-hero.

Doom liberating his country from oppression = anti-hero.

Doom turning to world domination and slaughtering innocents = no longer an anti-hero.

@RocknRolla - No dude. I think you missed the part where I said that Doom ends up turning into a cruel ruler. But before that happens, he's definitely an anti-hero. People can begin as one thing and end up as something different.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/25/2019, 6:08 PM
@Frshcoupe - Haha. Thanks man. I guess that's what 33 years of reading comics and researching the hell out of Marvel can do?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/25/2019, 6:10 PM
@Catmanlives - I hope so man! It doesn't even need to follow it closely. All I need to be happy is Doom's mother studying Dark magic and getting killed, his father dying, and him liberating the country.

Everything else is extra, but going to America and meeting Reed Richard's in college is pretty awesome too.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/25/2019, 6:11 PM
@AbidNaga - Its funny you say that because if you remember, the narrator of Books of Doom is a Doombot telling the story to a reporter who wants to make a documentary. Lol
CorndogBurglar

@SummersEssex - Hey I'm totally on PlusUltra's side if we're talking about a modern day Doom in the MCU. He should not be an anti-hero fighting against the F4 or Avengers.

But an origin story is a perfect fit for that.
IronDean2099
IronDean2099 - 6/26/2019, 6:03 AM
@CorndogBurglar - The twist at the end of Book of Doom was pretty cool, too. Thst could fit the mockumentary style quite well. You find out at the end that everything you've learned has been told from a very biased perspective and it's not even being told by who you think.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/26/2019, 6:39 AM
@IronDean2099 - Exactly! Its sooooo good.
IronDean2099
IronDean2099 - 6/26/2019, 10:59 AM
@CorndogBurglar - it just occurred to me, the mockumentary could be a Latverian propaganda piece commissioned by Victor to better humanise himself to his people, then at the end of his interview at the end of the movie, we see him get up, take off his mic, walks off backstage as it's revealed that he's actually a doombot who's visual feed is being viewed by our real Doom in his lair on a throne in full mask and cloak. Then he turns to view another screen and we see that he's also watching feeds of four astronauts returning to earth... How epic would that be?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/26/2019, 11:58 AM
@IronDean2099 - Yeah that would be pretty awesome. It would be a set up for Doom in the MCU as well as F4. I like it!

Whatever happens with Doom I love the idea of Hawley contributing ideas for how to keep things fresh going forward
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 6/25/2019, 12:31 PM
@DillonEnnis - They should base Doom on real world events. Use North Korea as an example. Make Doom a Kim Jong Un type where he has been going back and forth with the US over his Nuclear Technology and is disobeying a Peace Treaty between Sokovia and the USA by illegally exporting nuclear weapons to the 10 Rings in Afghanistan.

But this is all just a smoke and mirrors to distract the US and Sokovia Accords because of Doom's interdimensional tech. He wants to travel to different Earths at his own free will.

@SonOfAGif - I'm done with the 10 Rings being factored into stuff. Let them go.

@DillonEnnis - I can see them buying the script and incorporating elements into a FF movie. I would love it if Marvel would spotlight some villains. I mean still do FF and Xmen but give Thanos type roles to Doom, Magneto, Sabretooth, Juggernaught.

@KingCipher - the Dr Doom I know craves power and knowledge.. and acts strictly out of his own self interest.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/25/2019, 12:08 PM
@Kman - Acting strictly out of his own self interest doesn't necessarily mean you can't be an anti-hero.

Read Books of Doom. That is a straight up anti-hero story of Doom's origin. Yes, it was about him liberating Latveria and becoming king. So yes, he was doing it for himself. But he also freed all the people of the country and did not enslave them or kill them. He has strict rules that are expected to be followed or else he WILL kill them. But for the most part, Latverians live fairly free lives.

Books of Doom would be the perfect story to introduce Doom to the MCU.

Leigons great so it would be interesting to see what he could do with doctor doom. Although like the Green Goblin I think Marvel are gonna sit on Doctor Doom for a while, considering he has been in every FF movie before this. I'm hopeful though when Marvel does get to him he'll be as amazing as he is in the comics.
