@Doopie A lot of young kids watch both boys and girls along with their soccer moms who decide which movies they get to see.

I have nothing against Womens World cup, in fact i find it great that they are promoting then... But the fact that it is yet again the Fantastic four movie that it is doing this after all that problem about the black people and all those arguments in which, i don't want to have to read again or give my opinion on it.
I have to say that they aren't showing much confidence in the movie, because it is like they are looking for ANYTHING to bring controversial discussions and keep up the movie in the public eye by doing this...

@ImKennyPowers way better lol. I'm sure there's a FF joke in there somewhere.

@Doopie It's a bit different here. Whenever it's a national team we get a little crazy in this country. Regardless of the sport. We also tend to support Women's sports a bit more because of the strong presence of Women's sports in High Schools and Colleges. So it's not about soccer so much as young ladies and the famous soccer moms.

@Doopie - "it's a nice little tie-in for Fox to promote two things at once but the fact that soccer isn't all that popular in the states, added to that it's women's soccer (which even here in England the home of football, isn't watched very much) I just find it a bit odd. I wouldn't pair the two up but again, Fox have stakes in both so it makes sense for them"

Any guess what the 2nd most iconic Sports Illustrated cover is???

Brandi Chastain after her PK to win the World Cup.

Don't get me wrong, women's soccer is not very popular in the US, but Americans tune in to watch "our girls" in the World Cup!!

This is a great read about the picture, seriously it's fascinating how the stars aligned for it to happen:

haha, no FF joke that I'm aware of.

"It's a bit different here. Whenever it's a national team we get a little crazy in this country."

If you live in the US and are a fan of soccer, the USWNT are your only realistic chance of seeing US soccer win!! It's the sad truth, so an American soccer fan gets their fill cheering for "our girls."

@Doopie

I meant to mention you in my last comment.

That explains why it's different here for women's soccer than there.

I won't watch MLS it's dreadful but I watch your Premier League.

@Doopie - "haha - at least you have a chance of winning something!"

That's the point! hahaha. The USWNT gives American soccer fans something to root for because they're really our only chance to win.

I remember staying up to watch the USMNT in the 2002 World Cup and it was difficult to get excited about much less watch. hahaha. I mean I used to love soccer when I played, but the MLS was a chore to watch back then. It's gotten considerably better than it used to be, but if I'm gonna watch soccer I'd rather watch the best in the world. The talent and style of play is still noticeably different here and overseas.

I definitely like that older good-great foreign players give back to the game and extend their playing careers by joining the MLS.

@Doopie - "what's weird is that my brother lives in the states and he struggles to find anyone to watch a game with!"

It really depends on where he lives. There's viewing parties for soccer fans at various bars in a lot of bigger cities. It's like being a displaced fan. In Nashville there are bars that host/cater to various fanbases like Florida Gators and Kentucky Wildcats.

During the last two World Cups, Irish Pubs in Nashville were at capacity for most every game especially US matches. (And I know one of those pubs shows Premier League matches, a group of guys I went to college with used to go there every Saturday to watch Arsenal.) And LP Field has sold out or near sellouts for all US matches they've hosted. Maybe that's part of the reason why Nashville/US were a finalist to host the World Cup.

@Doopie - "the cynic in me says those foreign players are after the big bucks but you're right there is a certain element of - not raising the US game but giving it something it doesn't quite have in spades just yet."

You're definitely not wrong. haha. It benefits all parties involved. These foreign players get paid more than they might overseas and they are able to extend their careers because they are better by comparison of their competition. On the flipside, they benefit the MLS with their marketability and reputation. Plus, you like to hope these experienced and talented foreign players pass on knowledge and mentor MLS players.

"your men's team was pretty good last time I saw them. If soccer continues to catch on then the USA could be really good in years to come. Me, I've given up on ever winning anything. it's just disappointment time and again"

They're definitely a much improved team, even since the previous World Cup. There's a lot to be optimistic and look forward to, but they're still underdogs and they could use a good-great, young, talented core group of players. The more US players that see regular playing time overseas, the better the USMNT will be. Look at Howard & Dempsey. And Donovan on several loans. When the majority and/or best US soccer players play for foreign clubs, they'll be much better for it. I could be wrong, but they can't rely on the MLS to develop World Cup title contenders.

If you're a good-great US athlete, you're more likely to play one of the major sports at amateur levels because they're more popular and there's more lucrative futures. Hell, the SEC is the most popular and successful conference in college sports, HOWEVER they don't have men's soccer!!
A while back the NCAA passed a rule that there should be the same number of men's and women's sports and the SEC did away with Men's soccer. The SEC has men's club soccer and they play other schools' club teams, but it's not part of the NCAA.

@Doopie In Miami the fan base will be more Latin, South American and La Liga supporters. That's why the USMNT only plays qualifiers back East. If they were to play Mexico in Texas or California it would feel like an away game lol. another interesting thought about the girls is we have 347 division one Universities, hundreds of other colleges, and junior colleges. Almost all of them have women's soccer. They all offer 12 scholarships on average. It's about getting a quality education paid for. Then all this women graduate start families and careers and at some point and pass their love for the game on to the next generation.
