Josh Trank On Potential Sequel To CHRONICLE; Definitively Shoots Down FANTASTIC FOUR Rumors

In an interview with The Playlist, Chronicle director Josh Trank admits that a follow up is by no means set in stone, and suggests that even if Fox wanted to move ahead with a sequel, he may not..

"I'm still not sure [about 'Chronicle 2']. I was nervous this type of movie would be perceived as a gimmick. So I was in denial for awhile about what the potential of the film could be."

Admittedly, as much as I would love to see a sequel to the brilliant Chronicle, I'm not sure using the same found footage technique would really work a second time. It may be better to switch to a more conventional style, but would that have the same impact? Anyway, Trank also addressed those Fantastic Four reboot rumors that refuse to go away. In the past he has kind of avoided the question, saying things like "We'll see", "I know as much as you do" etc. But now he flat out denies there has been any talk about it at all. He does say he has a deal to make more movies with Fox, so I guess it's a possibility..

"I have not met about 'Fantastic Four' reboots. I was on the press tour and had to call everybody up and ask, what is this about? 'Fantastic Four' is at Fox, and I guess someone theorized about it, someone heard it, and Variety was like, that’s happening! I can’t really speak on that, because I don’t know what to say. I do have a deal with Fox, but right now I’m trying to work on original ideas"

I'm not sure anyone could do a good job with FF. I think of them kinda like Ghost Rider. It just may be too over the top and campy of a concept to work well on film. One guy can stretch his body to unthinkable proportions, and that was my biggest problem with the other movies (aside from the crappy scripts and direction) was that his power just looked stupid. They could pull of the Thing if they did mo-cap suits and made him bigger, but only barely. Johnny and Sue work fine, but the other aspects make it seem to cartoony.

then again, I would of said the same about the Avengers 5 years ago. So I could be completely wrong. I'd definitely watch another FF movie, just not sitting around in anticipation.

That's disappointing. I'd love someone with actual brains and talent to do a Fantastic Four reboot. Is it just me or is Variety's "reporting" usually a total joke?

I would love to know when the rights to FF do revert back. FF2 came out in 2007, so I can't imagine they are going to revert back too soon but that clock has to be ticking by now. That's some news I'd like to see. Punisher and Blade quietly went back. Chronicle 2, eh, not a big deal to me but wish him the best if he gets to make it.

I was interested in seeing Fox make up for their crimes against Dr. Doom. As for Josh Trank, I just feel as if he's lying. Not like we haven't heard dismissals that turned out to be a lie from filmmakers before.

@Marvel87

I think that's going to be the plot. N-Zone & Annihilus.

I would like to see him direct FF. But I would rather see him direct it under the Marvel Studios banner. The FF is crucial to the MCU and would bring Galactus back home.

Good.
As I've posted before, he's a rookie and not yet tenured to handle 'Marvel's First Family'.

The FF need to be treated with the utmost reverence!!!

FF was a half well casted movie. Reed and Sue were terrible, Johnny and Ben were perfectly fine and the play between the two of them was great. But Ian is a charm black hole, Alba did not fit in the least and let's not even start on the terrible portrayal of the villains in the film. Nevermind, lets. Julian McMahon is a terrible actor and if he ever gets work again, someone should be shot out of a cannon. There is a reason he was only tolerable as a demon on Charmed, because there were breasts to distract you from his acting and it still took about 5 pairs of them to do it.

When you can only get 2/5ths of the casting right, the series is dead. And Mr Fantastic can be interesting, he's a brilliant mind. Shoot, Scott Bakula could have been a better Mr Fantastic than Ian could have.

Dam, I was all excited for this.

Well, it sounds like it's going to be a lot longer before we see a new FF movie.

Do we really need a FF reboot? Let's have comic characters who are way due for a movie. Flash anyone?

Hopefully an F.F. movie reboot isn't off the radar.

Before the 1st F.F. movie wound up with Tim Story, there was talk about another director's idea to set the film during the 1960's. This seemed like a very cool, radical vision at the time (pre "X-Men: First Class" of course). IMHO this is still the way to go. It would be fascinating to see the F.F. navigate through the complexities of the 60's (especially at the height of the Cold War, Vietnam, and space exploration). It just seems that the "world" of the F.F. was born to unfold during this crazy, unpredictable timeframe. Look no further than the Negative Zone, Inhumans, Attilan, Sub-Atomica/Microverse, or Atlantis as proof.

Anyway...the key is to "amp up" the action, mystery, and wonderment the F.F. is historically known for + get credible actors for the roles of central characters. Here's my dream cast:

Johnny Storm/Human Torch: Ryan Gosling
Invisible Woman/Sue Richards: Charlize Theron
Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards: Billy Crudup
Thing/Ben Grimm: CGI, big, and bad-ass. Either Bruce Willis, Ed Burns, Vincent D'Onofrio, or Sylvester Stallone w/ modified voices would work.

This is great news people! Chronicle was ok but that's it. It wasn't as great as some of you people have been saying. I hate the whole found footage idea, it works very rarely in films. He should be happy the first one actually did as well as it did. The special effects were really cool and the actors did a great job but it was really boring most of the time and not realistic, in that this kid would be carrying a camera everywhere he went. As far as Fantastic Four goes I hope they never reboot it so that the rights go back to Marvel. Only then will the fan favorite FF get the movie we all know they deserve. Marvel is the only place their character's movies should be made, end of story!

FF reverts back in May? I read a while ago that the rights revert back to Marvel at the end of 2013. FF had to be an MCU movie just because the MCU needs Galactus and Silver Surfer.

@Ripynt Sure Stretching is a fantastic power for the big screen but isn't Superman MUCH more over the top? An alien from another planet that is strong enough to move a moon out of orbit or fly so fast he can go back in time, shite heat rays from his eyes, freeze things with his breath etc so on?

The first fantastic 4 was casted fairly reasonable except for doom which was a complete disaster. The convert a disfigured monarch from a small European country into a metrosexual? It can be done they just need a good writer and cast Doom properly.

Why is it every reporter keeps calling Chronicle a Superhero film, its got nothing to do with superheros, they just developed telekenisis and that's all. If they're superheroes becasue of that, then Stephen King's Lawnmower Man, Firestater and Brian DePalma's Carrie are also superheroes because they had Telekenisis too!

And enough with the Fantastic Four reboot, they're cheesey Superheroes that will need a very stylish and visionary director to make it work on film. Someone like Darren Aranofsky or Guilermo Del Toro.

No, it's a Superhero flick because one of the characters uses his powers at the end to save people..thus becoming a hero, with superpowers..a superhero.
