Marvel use ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT to take a dig at FOX

"Come take a picture with Rock Man and Ability to be Invisible Person!" Arrested Development take swipes at FOX over the Fantastic Four rights dispute.

After a long wait, the fourth season of Arrested Development was yesterday released in its entirety through Netflix, to the joy of its dedicated and growing fan base. One plotline, however, will have been particularly appreciated by frequenters of Comicbookmovie; a dig at FOX over the Fantastic Four rights dispute.

The plotline in question takes place in the fifth episode of the season (entitled “A New Start”), in which we learn of one character’s brief appearance as the star of a low budget version of The Fantastic Four, rushed into existence after “a drunk lawyer reminded [the studio] they’d lose the rights if they didn’t make the film in the next six days”.

This echoes the fact that FOX are contractually obliged make a Fantastic Four movie every six years, and that their announcement last year that a new adaptation was going into production has been viewed by many as a hurried and cynical decision in order to retain the rights to the franchise.

The result in the show is poorly acted, poorly scripted, with terrible special effects and set design, the implication being that FOX’s rushed project will fare no better.

As with many jokes in Arrested Development, context is everything. FOX famously shafted the show throughout its original run, airing episodes out of order, frequently changing its position on the schedule, and eventually cancelling it. Bitterness towards the studio can frequently be found in throwaway lines and subtle jokes in the original three seasons- a sentiment shared by Marvel, according to recent insider reports. The rights were sold to Netflix for the production of the fourth season.

Although FOX own theatrical rights to the F4, Marvel retain television and animation rights to all of their properties. The result of this is Marvel using an ex-FOX property and a current FOX property as weapons with which to attack FOX.

Or maybe it's just a reference to the made-for-TV movie made in the 90's that was never actually intended for release? This is exactly what happened in that case.

"Wait! Marvel has television rights to all thir properties"

Yes, that's why Spider-Man (as long as he can't be confused for Sony's version) CAN appear on the SHIELD show...he just won't.

nice! i think marvel and sony have a better relationship, maybe sooner than later, we'll see garfield's spiderman in the avengers for a cameo and vice versa!

The new season of Arrested Development was fantastic. The Fantastic Four musical part was my favourite plotline.

FF reboot is going to suck. We all know it, but some afraid to admit it.

So wait. Marvel Studios can make a live action Spider-Man TV show? Is this true?

No, Marvel can't make a live action Spider-Man show. People seem to be confused... The Animation rights went back to Marvel, not the rights to use the characer on TV entirely.

In a few years, that may read more as a news report or review rather than a joke if Fox screws FF up as badly as it looks like they might...

Honestly it didn't feel like a dig at fox. That's a gross misreading. If you watch it in context it's a dig at Ron Howard. Fox isn't even mentioned and the rights holders are depicted as marvel.

Does sound incredibly similar to the history regarding the low budget movie they made in the 90s. It was reported on this site that they are actually doing a documentary on the infamous 90s FF. Of course I'm ok with AD making fun of Fox. They cancelled AD and Firefly!

It's mostly a reference to the '94 film, which was produced by Roger Corman. Corman and Ron Howard are friends, with the former giving the young Howard his first chance at directing a feature, "Grand Theft Auto."
