Shocking New Details Emerge About Fox's Role In The Disastrous FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot

Entertainment Weekly has once again updated their investigation into what happened between Josh Trank and Twentieth Century Fox on Fantastic Four, and the latest details are definitely pretty shocking. Sources tell them that Trank was driven to breaking point by the studio very early on in production, something which might explain his later behaviour on set (which has been described as hostile and combative). Apparently, they "delayed casting and script approvals, slashed the budget by tens of millions from what was originally promised, and tried to force last-minute changes to the film just as principal photography was beginning." Enduring that wouldn't be easy for even the most experience directors, never mind a relative newcomer to blockbusters like Trank.

One battle which Trank did apparently win was getting the cast he wanted; Fox were looking for more famous actors. However, the studio were "hemming and hawing on approvals for the final script, it stalled crew workers who were trying to build sets, make costumes, props, and prep the movie. This created confusion and stress from the get-go that often boiled over among department heads trying to put together pieces of a movie that was still in flux." The more we hear about Fantastic Four, the clearer it becomes that there were serious faults on both sides. Who is truly responsible for the reboot's failure may ultimately come down to perspective, but it's a complicated story which we may never get to hear in full...what do you think about these details?

John Campea says that he has sources (not A source) that.. well if true confirms that it might not be Tranks that is the big baddy in this production.

And if what is on article is true, i honestly feel sorry for that guy. I hope some other moviestudio then give him something smaller so he can prove himself.

You do the best you can with what you're given, buddy. If you can't get the three action scenes you want, find a creative solution around it. That's your job. The solution isn't to create a down trodden atmosphere where none of the actors invest their energy into the characters (because that's goddamn clear enough). The solution isn't to turn in a 140 minute film where apparently only 50 of it is even usable and the rest of it has to be put back together months later.

Studios have demands and limitations they put on productions. And maybe the Fox executives were pieces of shit to your movie. And maybe you make a dull character-driven movie anyway just to stick it to them. But if you want to demonstrate real artistic integrity, you don't drag your heels back to the reshoots, do commentaries for the commercials full of footage that's cut from the film, and then throw a shade on it as it's about to come out.

You're either the director or you're not. If you are, own up to the best you could do. If you're not, have them put Alan Smithee on the credits.

The sooner someone gets an interview in the can with Trank the better. I have a feeling he ain't gonna be around in 5-10 years.

Lol again, if Trank was so innocent Disney wouldn't have let him go from their Star Wars film.

This doesn't make any sense though

Lucasfilm fired Trank. If it was the fault of Fox, why would they do that? And Fox has no problem working with Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn so why would there be a problem with Trank?

If Lucasfilm really was worried about things in this context, they should fire Simon Kinberg no?

I still can't believe people are still getting at Trank for the quality of the movie. You guys keep saying "and?" and "so what, you're the director." Have you people even came close to being in the position that Josh Trank is in? I [frick]ing doubt it, to be honest. You guys will tell Trank to suck it up, but will be the first ones to bitch about the movie being shit when he went along with the studio's orders. You guys are getting mad at him for trying to make a good movie; for fighting to make a good movie for you guys? You guys are [frick]ing ridiculous.

@Spock0Clock

I don't see why it is Tranks fault if he is mad on Fox about them first saying one thing, then try to push him in the last minute just because he is not that big of a name (like they did with the director of origins and daredevil i might add)

As John Campea said in one of the recent movietalks.

Let ous say that you hire some designer to make a job for you. Then you sitt down with the designer, on what your vision is, as how you should handle it.

Then the designer do what he or she is told, do to what you was agreeing on. You cannot just then come the next day and say. Change this to that, and the next day say that you want something other change...

If they was not agreeing on his vision and wanted somethin diffrent, they should never had said yes to him in the first place.

I can see why you get mad at him for reckoning with the source material, but for everything else, you guys make no [frick]ing sense.

The thing is, I see no difference in this film from the rest of the Fox X-men and other productions. They do alright with Planet of the Apes and that's about it.

For those of you who can't read, it's FOX's fault for the quality of the movie; not Trank's. The studio should have seen how much money he got them from doing Chronicle and should have just trusted him.

The only way they will get it back, is either failed atempt of starting a reboot like the Daredevil one, or them changing the rights in exchange of get permission of Marvel to do the X-men rights.

Only more proof that this was a rights grab from the very beginning and FOX truly has no interest in the property. It's quite overdue for the Fantastic Four to be in the hands of Marvel Studios where they belong. There is no other alternative.

I'm not even trying to defend anyone on this one, but if the man tripped out about all of the last minute changes that the studio placed on him I'd be totally upset as well. People acting like it's a sin to be mad about something that should actually have you heated. However this is a business and you have to find ways to be above the nonsense. He should've just dropped the project all together instead of going along with it. If not, this could possibly lead to those "rumors" surrounding other people coming in to film the project.

@4:51 This literally would've been me (Forest Whitaker) while Trank was letting loose. LOL

Not exactly shocking. This is Fox we're talking about.

Seriously, you guys should read up about the hell they put David Fincher through on the set of the third Alien movie. Also keep in mind those stories about Tom Rothman literally repainting the set of Wolverine Origins behind Gavin Hood's back.

Then again, if there's any truth to the rumors of Trank being totally shitfaced day in and day out, I'd blame both parties.
