HARRY POTTER Star John Lithgow Says "Inexplicable" J.K. Rowling Is "Not Really Involved" Amid Controversies

John Lithgow, who plays Professor Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter TV series, has somewhat condemned author J.K. Rowling's anti-trans comments and distances her from the show.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has become an increasingly divisive figure in recent years, with her views on the transgender community proving particularly problematic for many of her (now former) fans.

While some agree with the concerns she's expressed about trans people identifying as female, others have been quick to dismiss the writer as transphobic.

Essentially, Rowling feels she's fighting for the rights of biological women, highlighting the dangers of allowing someone who identifies as female to be allowed in a domestic abuse shelter or sex-segregated prison. The writer has also queried whether women are at risk of physical or sexual assault in locker rooms by some trans women.

However, by tarnishing every trans person with the same brush, Rowling's social media activity has made her hugely controversial. Several members of the original Harry Potter cast have distanced themselves from her, and much has been said about HBO's upcoming TV series and whether its actors were right to join the cast.

Talking at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (via SFFGazette.com), the Wizarding World's new Professor Albus Dumbledore, John Lithgow, chose his words carefully but distanced the project from the author.

"I take the subject and the issue extremely seriously. J.K. Rowling has created this amazing canon for young people, young kids’ literature that has jumped into the consciousness of society," the Dexter alum shared. "Young and old people love Harry Potter and the Harry Potter stories. It’s so much about acceptance. It’s about good versus evil. It’s about kindness versus cruelty. It’s deeply felt."

"I find it ironic and somewhat inexplicable that Rowling has expressed such views," Lithgow continued. "I’ve read about them, and I’ve never met her. She’s not really involved in this production at all. The people who are re-adapting Harry Potter and turning it into an eight-year-long TV series are remarkable. These are people I really want to work with."

"Of course, it upsets me when people are vehemently opposed to my having anything to do with this. But if you read through the Harry Potter canon, you see absolutely no trace of transphobic sensibility. She has written this great meditation on kindness and empathy and acceptance, which is why it’s so strange to me."

"Dumbledore is a beautiful role. There’s so much more to it than I even realised, mainly because of these people who are creating the series. So it was a hard decision on the basis of that [controversy], and it made me very uncomfortable and unhappy that people were actively insisting that I walk away from this job. But I chose not to do that," the actor concluded.

It's hard to find fault with Lithgow's comments. However, it has been widely reported that Rowling has input on the show's scripts. She's also serving as an executive producer, though that credit's significance can vary with projects like this in terms of active involvement.

Dominic McLaughlin has been cast in the role of Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

Harry Potter is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

HBO's Harry Potter TV series premieres in early 2027.

This article makes Rowling sound like a well-meaning feminist who just has a controversial opinion, but that's not true. If you only read mainstream news, you might think she is just standing up for women, but anyone who ever followed her on social media knows how much of a bully she is. I've personally witnessed her sick her followers on people. She is extremely immature and hateful to most marginalized groups (not just trans people). She even made shitty comments about asexuals. No good justification for that, but if you call her on it, she'll just cuss you out and block you. Fack that coont.

@JackDeth - But she's an artist and allowed to have her opinion. Too many times people are taking her work and misinterpreting it to fit an agenda that strays significantly from her intent. For her there are no re-interpretation of the characters, their actions, or morality especially if it involves gender and sexual orientation agendas. If the showrunners or studios want to do that, don't call it Harry Potter or set it in her wizarding world.

Similar to JRR Tolkien, Alan Moore, and George RR Martin they created a world that they don't want others to mess up or add unnecessary agendas or re-interpretations towards. For example, JRR Tolkien is a devout catholic from a conservative era so there shouldn't be any homosexuality or gay character or versions of his character in the Lord of the rings universe.

@mastakilla39 - What the hell are you talking about? No one is talking about re-interpreting her characters. This is about her personally being a bully and targeting marginalized communities. Please try to keep up.

@EscapeMySight - You do know she wrote every book that the series is lovingly based on right? And still makes money from it. And still has creative control.

It's so funny how the PR machine is going to work overtime distancing itself from JK Rowling being involved. Like it's okay that she wrote the books because that was before she was cancelled so they're good lol but anything she might do afterwards would be not good. lol smh
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2026, 5:48 AM
@EscapeMySight - They're like "Is this okay?"

lol, I don't know what's funnier that some people are like "Sure as long as she's not involved in this particular show" or that some people are actually still saying "No it's not alright and we now think you are a bad person too because you're involved in it".

Thou shalt not be involved in Harry Potter.
Thou shalt not read it.
Thou shalt not watch it.

Anyone breaking these commandments is a sinner and shall have their names deleted from the Book of the Face. They shall be cast out of society and will face the infernal torments of... everyone on the internet.

@ObserverIO - whats funny is all these blue hairs, tranny lovers, and all around degenerate enablers are happy she's not involved. However, I'm sure she's getting paid like crazy for this show. I can only hope that JK takes the money she makes from this show and puts it towards something good. Like combatting the tranny agenda.

@ObserverIO - No shit!? lol. She’s OBVIOUSLY making money off of it, it’s HER creation. I think she’s a horrible person, but I’m also relieved she’s not involved creatively, as she was heavily involved with the Fantastic Beasts films and those sucked.

I’m sorry to John Lithgow, as I genuinely enjoy him in a lot of different projects. However, his take here is just wrong. This show will bring more people into the franchise, new marketing opportunities, and Rowling will make tons of profit from that. She has made no secret that she uses her profits from this franchise to fund anti-trans legislation in the UK and if this is someone we keep exposing young readers to they will grow up idolizing her and her controversial viewpoints.

Besides the obvious transphobic views she has, this world is also not as inclusive as he claims it to be. You have horribly racist names like Cho Chang for your one Asian character and Shacklebolt for a black character. You also have goblins standing in and acting like degrading stereotypes of Jewish people with names like Goldstein. Ultimately it’s actually a kind of racist and hate filled group of stories.

@Rocket38 - "idolizing her and her controversial viewpoints."
Back before the trans trend, they did not give two f**ks about those background characters, people seem to forget she was all and still is onboard with their ideals, they invited her to their talkshows, let her give her speeches and they praised her for it, but because she did not argee on this one no-no take, for that, like the cult that they are, they ostracized her.

@Rocket38 - what “anti trans legislation” has JKR ever funded?
Rocket38
Rocket38 - 2/2/2026, 6:00 AM
@Nightwing1015 - She donated £70,000 to legally challenge Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Bill which would have made it so transgender people can change gender more easily. Ultimately it was ruled in 2025 that gender is based on biological sex.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 2/2/2026, 6:51 AM
@Rocket38 - So that’s my point - it wasn’t a piece of legislation and it turned out that the group in question were legally in the right. Thats not anti trans legislation, its the law being upheld as written which is hopefully something everybody should agree on

@HashTagSwagg - There is such a think as tmi...society continues to demonstrate this. They cannot process certain things for whatever reason. It's like comics fans in a way. The X-Men, for example, are all about carving a place for themselves and mutants "in a world that fears and does not understand them". Doesn't want to either in recent years. Yet we all love Wolverine, Cyke, etc. We love Batman, love Superman... I guess it all depends on the narrative and what side of the fence you're on at the end of the day.

@Nightwing1015 - No it's the funding of erasure of an entire group of people most people don't understand. The experts agree the best way to help someone with gender dysphoria is gender-affirming care. She's on the wrong side of history here and she doesn't care about those she claims to care about.

@Nightwing1015 - Surely we can agree that the difference between "funding legislation" and "funding legal challenges to legislation" is a distinction without a difference, yeah? She's attempting to use her money to sway the way trans folks are treated by the law. The path that takes, either backing new laws or challenging existing ones, is semantic at best.

@Clintthahamster - "the difference between "funding legislation" and "funding legal challenges to legislation" is a distinction without a difference."

The latter also wouldn't be an accurate characterisation of what happened. The group she backed wasn't 'challenging existing laws'. They were challenging a specific government's patently false misinterpretation of a law and the way in which they were incorrectly applying it. And the legitimacy of this challenge was confirmed by subsequent proceedings.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 2/2/2026, 2:03 PM
@Nightwing1015 - Oh, she wasn't funding a challenge to a law, but rather a challenge to how a law is applied? Well, that changes everything.

Come on, man. No amount of hair-splitting changes the fact that Rowling is perhaps the most prominent, vocal transphobe in the world, and that she uses a portion of her vast wealth to make life more difficult for trans folks at every opportunity, and so any action that further enriches her runs the risk of further funding her transphobic crusade.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 2/2/2026, 2:10 PM
@Clintthahamster - "Oh, she wasn't funding a challenge to a law, but rather a challenge to how a law is applied?"

How a law was misapplied and wilfully misinterpreted by people uninterested in a democratic, legislative process, yes.

As for JKR's attitudes generally, that wasn't what I was addressing. I personally think she's a bit obsessed with this issue and I don't understand why she's acts the way she does. But people keep repeating this 'anti-trans legislation' comment and it's just not a true statement.
