J.K. Rowling Reveals Plans To Bring A HARRY POTTER Prequel To The Stage

J.K. Rowling is pleased to announce that she is collaborating with the award-winning theatre producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender on a new stage play to be based on the Harry Potter stories.

What was it like to be the boy in the cupboard under the stairs? This brand new play, which will be developed for the UK theatre, will explore the previously untold story of Harry's early years as an orphan and outcast. Featuring some of our favourite characters from the Harry Potter books, this new work will offer a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard. A seemingly ordinary boy, but one for whom Destiny has plans...

J.K. Rowling will also be a co-producer on the project, but whilst she will collaborate with a writer on the new play, she will not write the script herself.

J.K. Rowling said:

"Over the years I have received countless approaches about turning Harry Potter into a theatrical production, but Sonia and Colin’s vision was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry's story to the stage. After a year in gestation it is exciting to see this project moving on to the next phase. I’d like to thank Warner Bros. for their continuing support in this project."

Writers and directors are now being considered, and the project will move into development in 2014.

Duke, I'm guessing since you know for sure those other projects aren't in development that you knew all about this play during the year leading up to this announcement, right? I mean, an insider like you would have to. You know this site is user generated and could really have used a scoop like this, eh? Next time, write that shit up!

This sounds like the least interesting aspect of the HP universe they could possibly make a play of.

@DukeNukem Because those wouldn't be lucrative projects for WB.

So... it's "Harry Potter, the boy wizard," without the wizard part...?
So... it's just, "Harry Potter, the boy?"

Are we seriously going to question why WB is ready to back anything related to HP over other projects that they have control over? The HP movie for 10 years were consistent on making money. When adjusted for inflation every single HP film made over 1B on the box office. This is the most lucratice franchise of all time we are talking about not Twilight or The Hunger Games(which is a great franchise, though).

Anyway,i'm sure WB has plans for more DC properties. But you can't possibly expect a studio to NOT get invensted in other projects outside the DC film. It's like saying that WB should drop Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in order to make an Aquaman film or a WW film even though the former is sure to make more money.

@DudeGuyMan

Seriously?I love Harry Potter and i also love my girlfrien)although she seems that she loves Henry Cavill more).Being an HP fan does not make anyone "homosexual".There are people out there that actually grew up with these films and books.

This has absolutely nothing to do with comic book movies or DC properties people...RELAX. @DukeNukem dude take a chill pill and learn how to read, this is a PLAY as in THEATER. So my money is on it never having to grace your presence anyway as I'm guessing you're not the theater type.

WB is about making money, and some folks have pointed out HP is a goldmine. WB has a ton of areas it can focus on without taking away from the DC Entertainment division. Relax.

@DudeGuyMan - seriously? Grow up dude. There's nothing gay about Harry Potter. Attacking it is like attacking any other work of fantasy fiction(like, idk...comic books?)

i swear, people are idiots. The Harry Potter franchise, which has been good to excellent, and a cash cow, has absolutely nothing to do with DC and their property. Why in the hell would anyone complain about a stage play in England and blame it on the lack of a DCCU property? If anything a sure bet on a new Potter movie gives the studio even more money giving them the comfort to take more risks. BUT WE AREN'T EVEN TALKING ABOUT A MOVIE. [frick] some of you are stupid. Not all of you, but some of you obviously wore helmets and rode the short bus on your way to school.

Why doesn't J.K. Rowling do a prequel movie like what they're doing with The Hobbit?

A big screen movie would make more money than a play. I know it would cost a lot more to do a movie, but it would make a huge profit.

The Harry Potter franchise is popular all over the world.

This is bullshit...they should be focusing on aqua man, martian man, flash, or shazam ballets instead. Now we may never get the justice league opera we all deserve...bullshit I say!
