"So, here I am again. As promised, I am posting a longer message before the week's end.

I have to thank those of you that have supported me from the start as well as those that converted along the way. And even say farewell to those that never did convert or believed.

I will miss Mr. Crere, the faith of Compa and Sir DennisC, the wisdom of Voronwe, the joy of Grammaboodawg, the support of Kangi Ska and so many, many others

Now, Pasi, et al- that is what is quite uncommon even on big films. Pete and co stuck to LOTR for years, I've developed films for years and I have shot many a movie on location... but rarely do you relocate for such massive amount of time specially when you have to do major ironclad agreements to put in deep freeze other contractual obligations with multiple studios.

My commitment to the project demanded enormous sacrifices both in personal and professional terms. The consequences of which will ripple for years. I relocated my entire life and family to New Zealand and first came on board in 2008.

So- while the cited delays, contractual complexities or obstacles, cannot be attributed to a single event or entity - you will simply have to believe that they were of sufficient complexity and severity to lead to the current situation. Trust me on this, Pasi- leaving NZ and the Hobbit crew is extremely painful.

As stated before- a wealth of designs, animatics, boards and sculptures is left behind representing accurately my ideas for Mirkwood, Spiders, Wargs, Stone Trolls, etc, etc and everyone (PJ, FW, PB and myself) has the same goal in mind: to try and ensure the best possible transition of the movie to a new director.

I believe these films will happen. Preproduction continues as we speak. The writing team of PJ,FW,PB and myself will keep moving the screenplays forward.

Perhaps even sooner than we may anticipate we will all look at the finished film and then- I will tear up whenever I recognize a set or a creature or a quirk created under my supervision. Everyone on these boards will get two movies. Me? I will be watching filmic family albums. Photos of my children from far away.

I hope you will understand how delicate the subject is for me.

I will drop by now and then, I will read the boards with interest and do hope to see some of you around at SDCC and many other places.

I am not here, however, to provide a blow-by-blow of what happened, but to assure you, as I have, that it has been the toughest situation of my life.

Beyond that- I am simply no longer an official voice for these projects. Be good, be well- and I invite you all to follow me into the next phase of my filmmaking journey.

Sincerely

GDT"

Well, i sure hope he'll be free to direct whenever a Swamp Thing feature is slated. Hope he also gets his hands on Sandman. And Hellboy 3 should be made while Pearlman can still play them ;)

@LEEE
the Hobbit is an instant classic for all ages!!!!
a nine year old can it but those over twenty can still get a kick out of it.
its the book that started it all.
it has everything!
action, comedy, adventure, fantasy, etc. and yet no love interest! i can live with that.

It's truly a damn shame. He is such a talented director and obviously a very classy guy. I agree with everyone who has suggested Dr. Strange (hope your listening Marvel) and Swamp Thing would be cool, if done right. I wasn't crazy about Hell Boy 2, but I think that had more to do with the script than with del Toro. So, lets hope he hasn't lost his passion for Hell Boy 3!!!

I really did not like HB2 as much as the first one, but I did enjoy it. GDT is an awesome director and I will watch what ever he puts out, or at least give it a shot. I am sorry he had to drop out of this movie, but I can't wait for his next film. God Bless GDT. :P

@brent...holy crap...that video is not that bad...looks true to the source a bit...they skipped over the funny scenes of each dwarf entering the house...thats what I want to see in the film...if we ever get it :(...but hey Del Toro for Dr. Strange is PERFECT...Cast Hugh Laurie and we got a great film in the making

"...other contractual obligations with multiple studios."

Fingers crossed that one of them is with Marvel Studios for Doctor Strange! :) I enjoyed The Hobbit novel but I'm not too bothered about the movie anyway to be honest!

Yeah, I had problems with both Hellboy movies as a huge fan of Mignola's comic books, but I still enjoyed them. I just try not to compare them to the comic books too much.

@McLovin/Teabag: Hell, yeah! Del Toro directing Dr. Strange equals fantasy gold! Just no Johnny Depp, please. I like the guy, but he's sooo over-exposed now that I'm tiring of him.

@BlackAirsAki87/LEEE: Yeah, my dad got me into all of these off-beat animated movies when I was a kid. The Hobbit is epic. Also, check out Ralph Bakshi's Wizards. I promise you that IT IS THE SH*T! It's got wizards, faeries, elves, nazis and the coolest bounty hunter since Boba Fett!

Here's the first ten minutes. The beginning is typical Bakshi with static images and a voice-over and the rest is a mixture of animation and roto-scoping.

@brent. I heard about the bakshi animations. I saw that Fire and Ice is being remade...they posted a trailer of the original and it looked EPIC!!!...and on blu ray too....gota pick it up.lol
McLovin

@ Brent - Dude, that video was AWESOME! It really took me back to the 70's and reminded me how much better we have than this generation and their crappy animation! True the beginning drags a little, but the voice over is killer (I'm a sucker for women and English accents) and anything that pits magic vs technology is an instant WIN! You can really tell that they focused more on the story telling and content than any other aspect. Lets not forget the fact that they even threw a shout out to the worlds (fantasy or otherwise) oldest profession!!!

p.s. I agree, no to Depp as Strange :-p

I hope this film never gets made. Peter Jackson is a hack who didn't understand the tone of the LOTR books, took too many liberties with the stories, and is a generally poor director.

Del Toro leaving this film or films as it may be leaves him available to do better films that will serve to respect the source material, rather than piss all over it.

i still think we need to give MGM the betty white treatment and get GDT back on the movie. his imagination is exactly what a movie like this needs. hell it will probably go to brent ratner or joel schumacher if he doesnt do it and we really dont want that.

just looking at pan's lab, hellboy and mimic the guy is perfect for the hobbit. i think his vision of the hobbit would blow peter jacksons vision of lotr out of the water.

FateSucks@ Are you serious? I think Jackson did an incredible job of capturing the tone of the LOTR books and the liberties he did take made the movie more enjoyable and more marketable to the masses, which is what you want to accomplish when you take a book to the big screen.
