Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief was released last year and did so well that Fox has optioned for a sequel staring Logan Lerman again as the title character. According to The LA Times director Chris Columbus will only have a producing role in the film and will hand over director responsibilities to Thor Freudenthal.

Reports The LA Times:

According to a source familiar with the production who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of discussions, studio Fox 2000 has exercised the option on star Logan Lerman, essentially meaning that the young actor is locked down to reprise his role as Percy Jackson in a new picture. The company has also hired a director in Thor Freudenthal, best known for helming the similarly boy-oriented "Diary of a Wimpy Kid;" he'll pick up where "Lightning Thief" director Chris Columbus left off. (Columbus will only produce this new movie.)

It was earlier reported that Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski(Ed Wood & Agent Cody Banks) have been brought on to write the script for the movie. The source has also stated that the film is being pushed for a 2012 release date.

The first film had almost nothing in common with the book. But I still enjoyed it. Can't wait for sequel.

Love the book series..
I don't understand why they took out Percy's fight with Aries and changed it to a fight with Luke.
Percy defeating the war god in battle is way more epic than beating some punk half-blood.

I just died a little bit. This is just as bad as Nick going forward with a sequel to "The Last Airbender".

The first movie killed any chance of an adaptation even remotely resembling the series of books. Making Hades the villain was a lame and cheap cop out, and prevented people from actually learning a thing or two about greek mythology.

Thalia is merged with Annabeth in the movie, and weilds the shield of a child of zues....... the invisibility cap gift from her mother is not even mentioned in the movie, though her celestial bronze dagger is shown well enough.

Grover being black didnt bother me, as Brandon T Jackson did a pretty good job, and was actually funny as a satyr. The recession line was hilarious.

I rented the first one and it was watchable on a nothing-else-to-do level. The sequel will only work if production is beefed up. What's the use of latching on to it's potential if you're going to make the same level of movie as the first. So, hopefully they will expand on it, so I can rent this one too.

The first one was, in a word - meh. It's a shame, though, because the books really are good. Hopefully Thor (I'm chuckling picturing of the god of thunder directing a movie) can be more faithful to the source material and deliver a good film.

Just wished they'd dye Annabeth's hair blonde ...

The first movie wasn't really good. But I guess I'll wait and see how this happens. Lets see if they follow the book more this time.

The first one was OK-ish but it moved way too fast. Percy's mother gets "killed" then he's just like "Oh Noes!" and there's no real grieving at all.

I wonder how they will proceed. The books were a collective story with a consistant bad guy all the way through. The movie changed the whole premise, so I woner how they will did themselves out of this one?

I barely remember the movie. I do remember being very disappointed at Annabeth being turned into a brunette and her character being virtually unrecognizable. She's so gorgeous and awesome in the book. :-(

Pretty meh about a sequel. If it's more memorable and better than the first one then great, if not then I wasn't expecting much in the first place.
