While we await the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the discussion has surprisingly turned to director Ron Howard's previous collaboration with LucasFilm, the 1988 cult fantasy movie Willow. It's been 30 years since we saw the downfall of Queen Bavmorda but in a recent interview with comicbook.com, the director has revealed that we may well be returning to the world of Willow Ufgood.
"I don't want to give away too much, but there is a little talk of Willow," Howard told the site. "We wouldn't call it Willow 2, I think it would focus a lot on Elora Danan, although Willow would have to be significantly involved."
Willow certainly has its fans and was a modest financial success in its day, even receiving two Academy Award nominations. Now arguably a perfect time to return to that world what with female-centered legacy sequels to 80's properties being very much in vogue.
The film has always been a property that Howard has spoken fondly of, in fact, in that same interview,he revealed that his experience on the production informed a lot of his decisions while making Solo: A Star Wars Story.
"I thought about that movie a lot as I was working on Solo" the director revealed "because there are certain scenes, especially around some of the Madmartigan stuff, was reminiscent of a character with that kind of swagger and bravado. And also some of the humor around some of the action in Willow was something I inspired to get into Solo."
There's no further word on how far these talks have gone and how real a Willow sequel currently is, but if Solo: A Star Wars Story is a success come May 25th, we may well be hearing a bit more about it in the future.
