Richard Armitage recently talked with TOTAL FILM about his role as Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey. According to Armitage, we will know quite a bit more about the race of dwarves by the time we are through watching the films.

On the dwarves playing a more prevalent part in The Hobbit films than they did in LOTR...

“The book is so focused on the dwarves, so I think it’s a chance for Peter [Jackson] and Fran [Walsh] to really look at that whole race in more detail, their heritage and what they’re like as characters.”

On wielding Thorin’s legendary goblin sword Orcrist and wearing the awesome armour of the dwarves...

“It’s bloody heavy! But it’s absolutely beautiful to look at. Every time they bring something new out everyone gasps. The armour that the dwarves emerge from the mountain wearing at the end of the film will be the armour of all armour.”

On some things remaining unchanged between The Hobbit and LOTR...

“There was a scene in The Lord Of The Rings where they find the stone trolls, and they’re identical in The Hobbit.

“I love those moments, when you link into the world of the film that you’ve seen before.”

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, Richard Armitage, Stephen Fry, Lee Pace and Andy Serkis and many others, is set to hit theaters December 2012.

Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug.

Too bad the stone trolls in fellowship are only better seen on the extended edition... the general audience won't reference it.

Lookin' good, but thorin is a bit too slim for a dwarf... In my opinion.

I wonder if these films are going to carry the lighter tone that the book did. The Hobbit was written in a completely different style than LOTR. It is almost a children's book in comparison.

@ Hawkblue - The Hobbit was indeed lighter. But the characters in "The Hobbit" were not saturated in mortal peril as they were in LotR; The Hobbit was an adventure, while LotR was a fight against the end of Middle earth.

I believe the undertones and foreshadowing of what's to come will be in the upcoming 2 part movie, and that is what will make The Hobbit brilliant.

@Hawks, The hobbit actually was published as a children's book. The Publisher gave it to his 10year old (i think) son to read. The kid's job was to let him know if it was worth publishing. of course the kid loved it and here we are..

I noticed that he talked about coming out of the mountain being the end of the film, which means we won't be seeing the battle between the wargs and eagles until the second movie and thus we won't be seeing Beorn until the second movie either, which kinda sucks.

the LotR was freaking epic, hopefully both parts of the Hobbit will be just as good, it will be hard to top the 3 films of LotR but i think Jackson is up to the challenge of making these two just as good as the other three.

Armitage looks like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull with that pose, almost a dead ringer for the cover of Broadsword and the Beast...

@ Valeries Ghost.

They come out of the mountain wearing their fancy army in the middle of the battle of the five armies so we will see that. I suspect the film will end with Thorins death. We will definately be seeing beorn, he got them to Mirkwood on the way to the Lonely Mountain.

That pic looks like an old Gimli picture that they have just put his face on and changed the beard colouring. I may be wrong though.

@Moltenman, you're right, I was thinking about them coming out of the mountain after being taken hostage by the Orcs. I guess i just didn't figure the complete story would be told in 1 movie, I figured it would be added to and cut in half. They have to cover a shit ton of ground to go from tea time at bilbo's to emerging from the mountain in the armour. Hmmm...

and i thought that pic looked off, in a different pic I thought I saw Thorin with Dark brown, even black hair....

It is fake. I don't think theres a non fake one out there. If it wasn't fake I would have had (FIRST PIC OF THORIN) In the title.
