Jon Chu Talks G.I. JOE: RETALIATION 3D Conversion And MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

The director talks more about his planned take on Masters Of The Universe, saying that he's not drawing inspiration from just one source and whether or not he wants to shoot it in 3D. He also discusses G.I. Joe: Retaliation's 3D conversion.

Speaking with MTV Geek, director Jon M. Chu talked about his two upcoming projects (which both happen to be toy adaptations) G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Masters Of The Universe. Originally slated for a June 2012 release, the former was pushed back to March 29th, 2013 to convert to 3D. Chu talks about his desire to push the usage of 3D, and whether or not he's interesting in filming Masters Of The Universe in the 3D format. He also says that he's not drawing from any single source for Sony Pictures' reboot, and that he's emerging himself into the He-Man world (similar to G.I. Joe and Step Up). For the full interview, click the link below.

“I really want to push how we use the 3-D. Especially since we pushed the movie date, I want to fulfill the promise to the fans that the 3-D will be great, and enhances the experience of the movie. So every step of the way, I’m in that room, watching… It’s hurting my eyes, but we’re getting it better, and pushing it further.”

“Fortunately, a lot of our shots, I guess it was in my brain anyway,” he continued. “We had a lot of depth in our shots, or let our shots play longer. For me, if we’re going to do this, we have to make sure it enhances the experience. That’s where we are right now, and it’s a slow painful process, to be honest!”

“I’m trying to convince them to give me a couple days to do a couple of enhancements,” said Chu. “But as of right now, we’ll see what they let me do. I really want to shoot some of the sections in 3-D to give it that edge… But we’ll see if time permits, and they’re down to do that.”

“I’m really excited about that one!” said Chu concerning his upcoming reboot of Masters Of The Universe. “We’re really early in the process… We’re working on the script, to make it better and stronger. We’re designing a bunch of stuff. I learned on Joe that to make it right, you have to do a lot of experimenting first, and you have to trust that during the process you’ll find where the tonal line is… It’s so delicate.

“A lot of people ask, who are you going to cast? We’re not even there yet, we’re just trying to get the character of the movie down. This is one of the most fun parts, where all the possibilities are open, and we’re just playing in the sandbox.”

And what does Chu think about the possibility of filming in 3D? “It’s not always my choice!” he said. “I love 3-D, and for certain movies it can be really great, and for certain movies it can be poison. As we figure out the character of the movie, I think we’ll have a better feel for it. Of course, I love 3-D – a movie like Masters in 3-D would be amazing… To be in that world would be a crazy, crazy experience. We’ll see what Sony decides.”

Chu also says that he has looked at various He-Man comics, as well as all iterations of the franchise. But currently, he's not looking to one specific source for inspiration. “Going into 'Masters of the Universe' is the same experience,” he stated. “Right now, I’m just soaking it all in. Learning, watching, listening, reading a lot. Any blogs that are out there, or people who have opinions. I’m just soaking it in, and feeling what the environment is in this world. I know what I personally feel about Masters, but there is something to be said for experiencing what other people experience in the world.”

I'm not a big fan of 3-D. I like to watch the movie the way it is in standard definition.

I don't mind watching a movie in 3-D. But it's over rated and alot of the times doesn't serve a purpose. It's a way for hollywood to get big bucks. The Avengers might not have been as successful as it is but it would still be a smash (no pun intended) if they didn't decide to use 3-D.

It's never (maybe rarely) a creative choice to use 3D... in reality its the producers and whatnot thinking it will make the movie better and make more money

Don't these people understand you don't make money by raising ticket prices, you make money by making a good movie. The raised ticket prices of a 3D movie does not make up for a lack of people who don't see the movie.

If anything people don't see 3D because the ticket is more expensive.

Something I would love for these movie producers and whatnot to understand is taking the worst movie in the world and putting it in 3D does not make it better. It still sucks AND you spent more money making it.

Let's say Avengers wasn't in 3D. Maybe they lose a couple of thousand compared to if they used 3D. But wait a minute? That money "lost" is probably no where near the amount they spent to film in 3D in the first place.

Have it on Eternia please and keep the look.I want a huge Arnie sized guy sat on a massive green tiger fighting a blue weightlifter with a skull face.Just [frick]ing go all out, castle greyskull,Trapjaw,Merman the lot, save Orko.I can live without that [foo foo].

@hope420....that's what I hope they do. Like have the Snake Men banished from Eternia long ago and Skelator is being used by them to bring them back. Make Skelator a tragic villian, in the fashion of Magneto and not just some kind of madman. But, not displayed as a simple henchman like Bane was in TDKR. Hordak is a must too!

DO NOT CAST SOME CHRIS PINE/ JOSH DOUCHE-HAMMEL/ SAM WORTHINGTON KNUCKLE HEAD IN THE HE-MAN ROLE.

NO TWILIGHT, BABY-FACED, HAIR GELLED TWIT.

The last full fledged respectable action star to come up recently has been Chris Hemsworth. Even his brother possess the semi-crossed eyes, vacant in that dome look.

Make it someone we can all respect, accept, and believe as an action star to undertake such a physically demanding role.

Ya FEEL??!!!!!!!!!

How do you screw up GI Joe? The second film does look way better than the first, but when are they going to learn that Vasquez-type Carano's, Rodriguez's and other actresses out there are suited for the roles of Lady Jaye, Scarlett and so forth. Lady Jay should have short hair and look like she could actually physically take down an opponent. Is it that hard to throw a beanie on a bearded actor who's wearing the same military attire and call him Shipwreck or by his alias?

Guess I'm a weirdo, I thought Vasquez(Goldstein) was kinda' hot.

@StrangerX

Good suggestion for Beast Man: he should actually scare audiences, not be a big bumbling ogre type. He should be like those insane glowing eyed half man, half whatever they were things from Beastmaster that chased podo and codo. :-P

As far as He- Man is concerned, call it Grayskull, dodge the alter ego and Orko s%*t, make him a prince that becomes He-Man(King of Grayskull preferably) once he discovers the sword and make battle cat his Jake Scully conquering the big orange flying creature from Avatar moment and you could have some great stuff. Thor & the LOTR trilogy have proved that this is possible. Hell if Chu has a good rapport with the Rock, I say he'd be a decent suggestion for Man at Arms(make his role more important in the film).

Seriously, Skeletor and his henchmen should truly be horrific other wise phone it in & order a large pepperoni..., with extra CHHHHHEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZ!!!!

@StrangerX: GREAT START. Agree with your choice!

@Hope420: YES!! Utilize all the different waves of characters for each "chapter". Great idea!

@TelaVizion: YES, YES, YES. The newest cartoon (what I saw) took the entire universe and made it a "cinematic" experience. It felt like a kingdom that existed for years. I would say tone down the bumbling henchmen and kiddie tone with Adam and we'll be in good shape for the best iteration of this fantasy world.

DAMNED IF THIS IS FROM A TOY!! Still no reason to make it a kiddie-cash-grab like Transformers which featured some of the stupidest lines, characters, and "gags" (robot balls...) ever to grave the screen and pierce our memories.

CHU.......WE GOT OUR EYES ON YOU'!!!!!!

Kevin Durand as Skeletor (Durand because he has build, voice and acting skills the character needs)

If Hunnam packed on mass, he'd be a great He-Man. There are very few who could sell the line: "By the power of Grayskull!"

Hemsworth could, but Thor is already taken.
Logan5
Logan5 - 10/26/2012, 11:17 AM
The first film, or a great portion of it, has to be about the quest for the swords and yes the transformation from Keldor to Skeletor should be a tragic thing. But once he's Skeletor, he should be in Loki from Avengers territory, but more nightmarish.

Frak 3D, Del Toro should be making Masters of the Universe with Hunnam as Adam.

They can cast Graham Rogers for Prince Adam (he plays Danny on Revolution). Kevin Durand would be a great choice for Skeletor. For He-man, joe manganiello or Alexander Skarsgard can pull it off.
MisterMagurlypse
MisterMagurlypse - 10/26/2012, 11:39 AM
Adam can be a prince but it's one of those things that he really doesn't know he has the bloodline in him for whatever reason. As far as Battle Cat, I thought that Adam is trying out for the Eternian army and as a form of training the recruits must go into a forest and try to tame and ride one of the wild tigers that inhabit said forest. After some intense chasing and action Adam rides out of the forest upon the tiger that will become his own Battle Cat. This could be an exclusive branch of the army that the soldiers ride Tigers into war.

The division he gets appointed to will be a fighting force consisting of Ram-Man, Fisto, Mek-A-Neck, Buzz-Off and some others. Like a band of brothers, an elite group with there own fighting skills.

I dunno, something like that maybe.

I agree that He-man could make a great trilogy if done right. They could do alot with Eternia and the long list of characters, good and evil. Let's hope they don't screw it up as bad as they did with Dolph Lundgren.

That too would be good! The final product will probably be nothing near our suggestions and frightfully worse. It's a Lorenz Di Boniventura(I don't even care on the spelling)production I believe, so I'm not expecting much. Kinda' getting a little pissed off because I just now realized how amazing this could be. Seriously, I love Del Toro, he's not in my top 5 or anything, but he great and this would be right up his alley, especially after spending so much time on the Hobbit. Ugh. Another blown opportunity.

The first G.I.Joe movie was a waste of money(not mine, the studio's), much worse than ANY of the Transformers movies (yes, even ROTF) and with this new director such a fan of 3-D, I really doubt Retaliation will be any better.

IMHO if you don't have a story that's engaging enough WITHOUT 3-D, then don't even bother. I really can't believe this rehashed 3-D trend is lasting as long as it has....oh wait, I forgot, there's a buttload of easily-amused a$$holes willing to pay for it because it's so awesome....gimme a f#ckin break. Please. From 3-D. And a$$holes. :P
