Green Hornet May Have a Director

Looks like the Green Hornet's first director, Stephen Chow, has backed out of the project leaving the film's director chair empty for the moment

To fill the empty director's chair Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures has announced today that they are in negotiations with Michel Gondry to fill that seat. Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg will be writing the screenplay as well as executive produce. Neal H. Moritz will be producing the film through his Original Film production company. Green Hornet is scheduled to begin shooting this summer and is set for release June 25, 2010. The film will be executive produced by Michael Grillo.

Gondry is best known for his work on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach states, "From the very beginning, Seth, Evan, and Neal wanted this film to stand out from the pack with its originality. You couldn't ask for a better director than Michel Gondry to bring that to life." Tolmach is right about that, what better way to make a comic film stand out by hiring a successful dramatic director. Moritz added, "We're huge fans of Michel Gondry. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and all his films are as daring as they are extraordinary, fueled by creative ideas that spring from his unique world view. Our first rule, always, is to make the movie that we want to see, and that couldn't be truer than with Michel bringing his stylish and original touch to the helm."

Gondry chimed in and had this to say "I'm very excited about The Green Hornet and all that I hope to bring to it. This story has always been close to me and now Seth & Evan have written a script that is both funny and real - the best of both worlds. I cannot wait to further collaborate with them on it."

Regardless of who the director is the films star is Seth Rogan. Audiences will automatically conclude that this film is like his others and not to be taken seriously. Who knows,,, that may be the direction that they want to take this film. In 1966, The Green Hornet was turned into a television series starring Van Williams in the Star role with Bruce Lee as Kato. The show ran for one season.

As I remember, Stephen Chow didn't back out, he was KICKED OUT of the director's chair because he was trying to turn this into another 'Kung-Fu Hustle'! Does this mean he won't be playing Kato? If he isn't, I'd like to see Jet Li get the role!

I'm all for actors trying something out of their comfort zone and growing, but seriously - can ANYONE picture SETH ROGAN as the Green Hornet? Fellow Green Hornet fans - would you WANT to?

I have a feeling this movie is going to suck @$$balls!
Seth Rogan as the Green Hornet?! And now with the news that Michael Gondry may be directing... you mean the guy who directed "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Be Kind Rewind"?! Sounds like their going to make a campy, comedic farce.
(Yeah, I smell a bomb in the works.)

(P.S. Not a "comic book" movie, just a super hero movie hot off the cottails of the Adam West Batman series.)

I was never a HUGE fan of the series to begin with, the only thing that actully made the series even REMOTELY viewable was an incredibly talented Bruce Lee... and last I checked, I didn't hear any news of him appearing in the film.

I get a nauseated feeling every time I her about Seth Rogens involvement in this movie. Bruce will be turning over in his grave.

Adaman - um, hate to say this, but you're a little off on your statement about the Green Hornet not being a comic book hero. There have been Green Hornet comics (on and off) since the 40's. He didn't get his start because of that stupid Adam West show (I REFUSE to call that 'Batman'!), but actually was born in the 30's with a radio serial.

Well atleast Seth Rogan isn't GREEN LANTERN lol!!!! But i thought Seth was off this now?!? Im sure i read it somewhere lol, oh well, i like his movies PINEAPPLE EXPRESS was f*ing funny but like most don't think he can pull this off, even if he was to play it straight which he isn't sad to say i might've had some hope , but as a comedy bob hope lol

Pineapple express was funny as hell.. but that doesnt mean Green Hornet is supposed to be. Seth Rogan needs to STEP AWAY from the Green HOrnet and anything related to it. He is ALL WRONG. It makes me GAG just thinking of him as Britt Reid. People need to get serious when it comes to things like this.

Jet LI IS AWESOME! but I think he is too huge a star for this role delegated to sidekick. But we need someone like him. HIs maturity and skills.

ok, well, since this article is titled and directed at the, well, director, i'm going to comment on that and leave my opinions about Seth Rogan out.

I for one, LOVED, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

the advertising for the movie was misleading, making me think it was a comedy, and in way it is, but it is a VERY intelligent movie that makes you stop and think about how every little thing affects your life. That's the kind of style we need for the Green Hornet. I think this guy makes the cut.

Remaking the TV series into a film is a FANTASTIC idea, however Stephen Chow really should've been all over this. Michel Gondry is going to add some artsy-fartsy bullshit into the movie, and Rogen is only going to aim it at pot smoking teens.

This series was never even a comedic hit so I have no idea why Rogen is involved and why the hell they even decided to make this an even more modern version of Rush Hour. Seriously, Seth Rogen's childish bland humor got old...it got old fast.

This could've been a martial arts epic Stephen Chow style, now it's looking to be another comedic poo-poo pee-pee obnoxious movie only high school kids will enjoy. UGH

Gondry is the shit. He is one of my favorite directors. However, ive never seen the series or the comicbook. The only incarnation ive ever seen was in the bruce lee story and they made it out to be silly.
If they get jet li, it would have to be more about kato than the green hornet. That would seem like another black mask.
Personally, i would like to see the silly, abstract take. It would have to be over the top though or else people coming out of the film would say, "dass stoopid!"

I admit i don't know much about Green Hornet...actually, almost nothing at all....but I do know a lot about filmmaking.

I would love to see this, an artsy yet comedic movie would be awesome.

comic book movies are taking themselves too seriously now-a-days...I like it, don't get me wrong, but we need a new flavor...like super hero movie...that was good at relieving all the stress...sure it was the same boring formula as the Scary Movies...but it was a nice change of pace...we need something a little more out there and willing to make fun of itself. Kinda like Kick-Ass is doing. and that thing Mark Hammill did (i don't remember what it was called) w/ his documentary and in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back...

I'm not saying that it has to be really crude, I'm just saying we need a change in pace.

at least they're not making a movie about Archie or another Dennis the Menace. (and they probably will because I just typed that sentence)

Without Bruce Lee? Kato is gonna S U C K BIGTIME!!!
Stephen Chow? Only funny in his HK element. This should NOT be a comedy. It wasn't a comedy on TV. Lee brought respect to the subserviant role written as Kato-no Tonto here!
Best cast for the roles would be Matthew Fox as GH and Wu Jing as Kato. If you don't know who Wu Jing is, Google him...

I have a feeling this movie is going to be awful as well. If so I wouldn't blame Seth Rogan necessarily as it seems the studio is trying to make it comedic. They even tried to convince Kevin Smith to write/direct at one point. Smith just said he didn't want to be involved in something this big. (Or so he did on his podcast, don't know what his official statement was).

Next thing I know Seth Rogan is tied to the picture writing and actually starring (really?). I don't know if he asked to be part of it, but the studio seems more than willing to let him fulfill his "comedic vision" or WTF ever.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/25/2009, 3:29 PM
But the Green Hornet ISN'T supposed to be funny!!! Even during the 60's, it was a SERIOUS TV show (juxtaposed to that POS Adam West disaster!)! To make it funny would TOTALLY ruin the concept! If Rogen actually did his homework (instead of trying to rely on his pot-saturated memory) he'd realize that and JUST WALK AWAY!!!!

Wow, i think this is the most biased "News" article i've ever read on here.
-"Tolmach is right about that, what better way to make a comic film stand out by hiring a successful dramatic director."
-"Regardless of who the director is the films star is Seth Rogan. Audiences will automatically conclude that this film is like his others and not to be taken seriously."

Wouldn't this be better as an editorial?

Now to JMan's Drones:

LOGANONIEL-

You are correct sir, I too have read that Chow was kicked off this film because (like you said) he was tryin to take the comedic elements of the film over the top. And from what i've read, BY SETH ROGAN. Apparently Rogan is a HUGE fan of the source material (both comic and tv series) and is taking this film extremely seriously. So much so that he's alrealy lost over 30lbs. I'm a fan of the series and it's nice to know someone on the inside cares about it as much as us.

TEENIDOL-

You tool. Your opinion is your opinion, but to say that Rogans style "got old" is ignorant. The last four movies that he's headlined have grossed $530,000,000! Can you count the zero's? Okaaaayyyyy. $530Mil. That's half a Billion dollars in 4 movies, and that's not including his animated stuff like Kung Fu Panda. When exactly did his style "get old"? The only reason Zack and Miri only made $36mil is because it had "porno" in the title. Before that was Pinapple at $100mil and Knocked Up at $215mil. Rogan is Hollywoods comedic golden boy, especially since Will Ferrell seems to be on a downward slide.

KEEPITREAL-

Dude, Van Williams sucked, that dry F*ck. Rogan could out act him any day of the week. Bruce Lee was the only thing that made the show watchable. Yea, he was a bit funny, but he wasn't trying to be.

So much hate for a dude that cares as much about the film as us. He is aware that it's a stretch, he's aware the film isn't a comedy, he's out to prove people like you guys wrong, and I appreciate the fact that he's willing to step up against an established director like Chow because he feels like he is going to take the film in the wrong direction.

I can't wait till he proves you wrong.

OK, ok Talontd - your point is taken. As I seem to remember, I had my doubts when Michael Keaton was cast as the Bat in the original 'Batman'... boy were my fears laid to rest! Maybe you're right, maybe Rogen WILL do the role justice. One can only hope (and pray).

Now if they can only find a suitable Kato...

Dude?.... Van Williams was no better no worse than other actors his time period but he did do justice to the role. To date I am sure his character will be updated & be even more calm, cool, collective, - Seth is not that. I have never seen Seth serious. And if and when I do I am going to be waiting for him to crack a joke or something, its what he does.

He's not Britt Reid IMHO. Dont get me wrong I like Seth. When I need a good laugh he is who I think of first. Pineapple Express was HILARIOUS! He is talented. But when I want a kick ass action movie his name is not one that comes to mind, no offense. I dont have hate for him. I like his movies. I like him. I just dont like him as Britt Reid.

KEEPITREAL-

Dude I can totally understand that, and yea i might have been a bit hard Van. It's just that everytime this movie gets brought up everyone RIPS Seth and I was sick of it. He's probably my favorite comedic actor (Know how i know your gay?....) Classic.

I'm just tryin to say that in every interview (that i've read), he can't stop talkin how much he enjoys the source material and about how serious he's taking this. He actually said he feels like a sell out for losing so much weight.

Everyone is worried about him being a clown, but he knows the role is serious. His range has never been tested before and it is a bit nerve racking to test it on a property that we care about, but damn, give a guy that hasn't dissapointed us yet a chance.

loganoneil - 2/25/2009, 5:22 PM
Talontd - actually, I was hoping they'd offer it to Jet Li. Chow's martial arts skills are good, but not the best (he's self-taught). Skills-wise and appearnce, Jet is the closest thing out there to Bruce Lee (you gotta' respect a man who became All-Around Champion of the Chinese National Wushu Championships, before he even reached puberty!). I know, I know - he's probably too 'big' to take a supporting role, but it would be a BEAUTY part!

Talontd - 2/25/2009, 5:39 PM
LOGANONEIL-

Ah man, that is the dream. My buddy has a documentary on Jet Li. It shows him winning all kinds of competitions as he was growin up, he's a phenom. That dude was 12 and could probably take most grown men, and dare I say it, I think he wudda wooped Bruce Lee's ass if they both met in their primes.

But I have two problems with Jet as Kato:
-(Minor) I think he might look like a midget next to Seth not sure on his height tho.
-(Major) Unfortunately he's starting to look his age, he'll be 46 in april.

10yrs ago, sh!t, 5yrs ago i would say yea in a second. But lately i'm starting to see his age on his face.

I had another guy in mind, but his name escapes me at the moment. I'll post it when it comes to me. Any other suggestions?

Talonted: I think you hit it right on the nose when you said:

"His range has never been tested before and it is a bit nerve racking to test it on a property that we care about,". You make a compeling plea though.

Logan: You know I got nothing but love for you baby!!!

I love Jet Li! He is awesome, fantastic but we have to be realistic, unfortunately sniff...sniff... And also like Talonted said..maybe 5 years ago.

But...to say...GASP!!! woop Bruce!!! That's just crazy talk! Even if it were true, you dont say it. He was the first most awesome martial arts master! You must show respect! (It would be interesting to watch that though huh?.....)

Real - To borrow a phrase from the movie 'Highlander', "There can be only ONE...", and his name is BRUCE LEE. With that said, Jet is the closest in skills and appearance today who could mimic classic Bruce (notice I used the words 'CLOSEST' and 'MIMIC'). So what if he's getting 'up there' now (46 is not THAT old - he still can kick ass on the movie screen better than most other action stars half his age!)? I still say he'd be a killer Kato!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/26/2009, 9:20 AM
Talontd - I'm gonna' have to disagree with you on the outcome of the Bruce vs Jet ass-whooping contest. Jet (while EXTEREMLY talented) is a WUSHU practitioner. While Wushu utilizes combat elements, it is strictly for show - kinda' similar to the forms in Karate and Tae Kwon Do that the western world is familiar with (but a HELLUVA lot more complex, in my opinion). JKD (Jeet Kune Do) was developed strictly for FIGHTING and self-defense. The 'flowery elements' (that fill other styles and are so prevalent in Wushu) have been eliminated. What's left over is a distillation of pure fighting method. JKD also incorporates elements from several differnt fighting styles, making it a dangerous 'complete package'. In a fight between Bruce (in his prime) and Jet (in his prime), my money's GOT to be on Bruce!

Of course the point is moot - aside from Bruce's untimely passing, Jet is a staunch pacifist (he's a practicing Buddhist). He would try everything to avoid a fight, even if someone were provoking him.

...but it would be one HELLVA' fight to see!

LOGAN: "There can only be one". too true... remember...I did say "IF" it were true... =:) I know Bruce Lee is "The One" . I have grown up w/Bruce Lee and he will always be first to me.

You know this, I know this, Talonted knows this, everyone does!....ahhhh but Hollywood producers, agents, etc...etc...etc is a force unto their own.

Do you think if they approached Jet & asked him for the sake of the movie, would he consider the role as tribute to Bruce, Jet would consider? Or would he decline? He might surprise some people. I dont see him as a person with a big ego. If he did... he would be forever the ultimate best actor to me. To care more for the role & movie... man he could do no wrong in my eyes! ever! after that. Cuz like you said he is the closest in skills today to Bruce Lee.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/26/2009, 2:07 PM
Real - I have no idea. He's established himself quite well on his own skill (although I'm sure I'm not the first to make the Lee/Li comparison before). I don't know if he'd want to get involved in something Lee was associated with (not being able to do the part true justice), but who knows? I imagine your assumption about his lack of ego is true. Everything I've read about him suggests he's a really 'down-to-earth' kinda' guy.

@ Talontd -- Seth Rogen plays the same retard he does in every other movie. He's a one note actor. If this excites you then they might as well cast Will Farrel in the film too.

The Green Hornet was never a comedic series. I'm also tired of artsy music video directors getting parts they shouldn't even be considered for (look at all the horror remakes getting green lit). Still, I don't [frick]ing care how much money a movie makes. Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, Superbad, in all those movies Seth Rogen played the EXACT same idiot. Yet people don't get tired of it. Of course it's smart for Hollywood to cash-in on the same people who pay to see this crap, but as a fan of the Green Hornet series (even if it was one season) this pisses me off. Besides, just because a movie makes alot of money doesn't mean it's a good movie. Same bullshit like Juno. NO OFFENSE to anyone who supports Rogen or Gondry, but if anything this movie shouldn't even carry The Green Hornet name. Make something else different, don't alter a cult classic series to cash-in on "potty mouth" humor that seems to be the comedic craze of today.

They should burn the script, and casting agent for this production. Leave it dead in the water. As for those who think Jet would whup Bruce in their primes, Wu Shu is all about Forms and Techniques and Styles, Lee was all about combat-streetfighting, and as he said it, "I have no fear of an opponent, if he should do anything, he'd better kill me baby, before..."
