Kevin Smith Talks Multiple Green Hornets

His Green Hornet #1 goes on sale today and he talks about the upcoming movie version.

Before Michel Gondry or Seth Rogen were attached to The Green Hornet movie, Kevin Smith wrote a script back in 2004. Fast forward six years later and Dynamite Entertainment acquired the script and developed it into a comic book series that is completely different from the film that’s coming out this December. Kevin talks with MTV about his comic and where Seth Rogen is heading with the movie version.

Kevin wanted to make sure the comic book version got out ahead of the movie version:

"Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry are going to define the Green Hornet for the mainstream. So I just want to get in one last kind of...this is how Green Hornet was back in the day"

He also had this to say about the film version:

"It's action oriented but it has a lot more humor in it that the one we would have been allowed to do or the comic book series will have."

Green Hornet #1 goes on sale today including cover art by Alex Ross. Smith is using the overall feel of the radio serial and TV show but has still made a few changes with the biggest one being Kato is now a woman.

The movie is expected to be out this Fall sometime.

DogsOfWar-I knew Seth's version would obviously have comedy in it but after hearing Kevin's interview, I hope it doesn't end up on the campy side of things.

I miss the Green Hornet comic from NOW comics during the 90's

Kevin smith is a talented director (although I just saw Cop Out and the title speaks for itself) and I would have liked to have seen his version of that movie, as I suspect it would have honored the source material. But I guess we at least get to see what it could have been with the book coming out. Not sure what to make of the Seth Rogen comedic/action take on Green Hornet. With so many CBMs out there (and seeing what happened to the Spirit), it may very well be for the best that he takes this character in a different direction. Or maybe it will just be a total disaster (who knows). I like the Green hornet and I enjoyed the TV show (well come on, it had Bruce Fraking Lee on it!!!!), but let's be honest, if Rogen totally embarrasses himself in this one and this is the last time Green Hornet gets a movie, will anyone really care?

@McLovin I would care. Did you ever read the comic from the 90'S?

Nah. I remember seeing something here and there but never really looked into it. Sounds like it was good. What was it called?

Wicked stuff @ DOGS!!!

Damn, i wish they were the actual costumes up top for the movie, the comic book looks cool!

I doubt the movie will have too much comedy, hell most cbm's have humor! : P

Smith didn't write Cop Out, but he must have seen something there that I didn't. It is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen him direct. It has it's funny moments here and there, but over all, it's crap.

I think Smith has a great sense of humor, and he's a funny guy and seems cool and all..but a great director? Not a chance. His only solidly, consistently good movie was his first one, and that was probably because he didn't have the cash to indulge himself so much. Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay And Silent Bob, Clerks 2 all had their moments but with every chuckle they had an eye roll. And Zack And Miri was absolute shit..sounds like he's continuing in that vein. I haven't heard a worse reviews movie than Cop Out since ROTF. I do like his comics though.

Ror - I see your point (though I enjoyed both Amy and Dogma). I like his comics also and I think Green Hornet would have been a great way to see if his love for comics would translate well to the big screen. I Hope we will see him tackle another CBM in the future.

@McLovin Now comics ran an ongoing monthly series of Green Hornet in the early 90's. It was pretty good and about several generations of Green Hornet including GH and Kato from the TV show they made them look just like Bruse Lee and Van Williams from the show. But the comic was mainly about the modern day GH. It even touched on about how the Lone Ranger was their relative and great uncle of the 1st GH, the GH from the old Radio show.

Dmon - Wow, that actually sounds pretty cool. I wonder if those issues were ever put into a soft or hard cover format. It'd make my life a lot easier than chasing after the single issues. I liked GH as a kid. True there are a lot of similarities with other heroes(Young playboy dresses up as a costume vigilante and along with his side kick, fight crime together in this bad-ass car. Sure sounds familiar). Hey, does anyone remember what GH called his car?

Hey man i have to disagree with you about his only solid movie being clerks. True in my opinion it was his best move but dogma and chasing amy both brought something new to the table in there respective genres. Chasing amy is a romantic comedy for those people who hate romantic comedies. Not to mention the ending to chasing amy was possibly one of the best dialogues in romantic comedy history(however that is not saying much). I also think that the subject matter stayed consistent it never really found itself down playing some aspects of the movie especially with regards to Banky. The character development was also well done. I mean to take such an anti-homosexual as Banky and have him have a total bromantic crush on Holden in my opinion was brilliant. i found dogma charming. It didn't apologize which in my opinion is respectable. The writing i felt was superb especially the way that jay and silent bob end up in the movie. The overall story was really solid and pushed the envelop in terms of how people view religion. Dogma took a chance and in my opinion it worked. All in all i think that Kevin Smith is an above average director and writer. however my opinion is biased because i have virtually grown up with his movies so naturally I'll find a nostalgic value in them. Maybe not the greatest director of all time but definitely one of my all time favorites.

MarkCassidy - 3/3/2010, 12:57 PM
Chasing Amy was good, and I agree it had some great dialog but I thought the bromantic crush thing was totally sign posted and unrealistic, and the lead chick was about as annoying as a human being can possibly be. Her voice was like nails on a black board. But I get the whole romcom for romcom haters thing..I just don't think he pulled it off. Dogma was basically a complete rip off of Preacher in almost every way possible. Smith admitted that he wanted to make Preacher but couldn't so made his own version up. It too had its moments but equally like I said before, it had its face palms. Smith can never decide if he wants to make a drama or a dick joke movie..comedy drama's can work of course, but not to such extremes.

I strive to prove you wrong. The "Dramatic Dick Joke" genre is something I have been working to develop for some time. ^_^ I will change your mind one day... or fail miserably. Think about how much dramatic tension a well placed fart can create.

I agree with GUNSMITH & Turkish - Valley is like a real life Steve Rogers. The problem is he is turning 44 and would not be able to do sequels. It really is a shame this movie was not done sooner. He would have been great!

Kevin Smith is the man. The only bad film I've seen from him is Clerks 2, and I haven't seen Cop Out yet. I might check out his Green Hornet comic.

I don't know much about Green Hornet and I've never read the comics. However, the old tv show looked kind of stupid anyway; this movie might actually turn out good.
