In an interview with MSN the actor who is best known to most of us as the main in villain in movies like;
Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass, and
John Carter. When asked if he was worried about being typecast as a villain he said no and actually is surprised that people mention it because early in his career as hard as he tried he couldn't land the bad guy roles.
He says that his first fifteen years of acting were filled with father and brother roles, and it took a part in a British television show, "The Long Firm" in order to change people's perception of him. After digging deep and delivering a performance that was filled with a tragic darkness he then become the go-to-guy for villain roles.
Out of curiosity do you not spend a lot of time at home wondering when the phone will ring for 'Green Lantern 2?' That had to be something where ideas were laid, and maybe the end result was not quite there ... or have there already been discussions and somebody said, 'No, we're going to nail it on the second chance' or you just haven't heard about it?
Strong: No, I know nothing. I know that there are two schools of thought. There's obviously the school of thought that feels it didn't make the money it should've made or what they wanted it to make, so therefore financially there's no point in making a second one. But there's also the school of thought that feels like the groundwork was made with the first one, and that the advertising and notion of 'Green Lantern' is out there and if we can make a second one that absolutely kicked ass that it would undo all the feeling that the first one hadn't really delivered in the way that it should've done.
Was it great to just watch David Niven films to research (playing Sinestro)?
Strong: Well I know David Niven. I mean I've read his books. He's always been a bit of a hero. Probably the same time I was reading 'Tinker Tailor' I was reading 'The Moon's a Balloon' and 'Bring on the Empty Horses.' I'd love to make another ('Green Lantern'), but market forces tend to dictate these things. Although if the second one did deal with the fall of Sinestro, I felt that I came out of quite well. People seemed to be very complimentary about what I did in it, whether or not they liked the movie. Who knows?
