BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Eyes Top Spot Again Amidst Slow Weekend

After opening at #1 in August, Guardians of the Galaxy would fall from the top spot only to return there both last week and the week before that. Now, with little to no competition this weekend, the James Gunn helmed movie will remain #1 in America over a month after release...

Guardians of the Galaxy is the highest grossing movie of 2014 domestically, and a lack of any real competition this weekend should play into its favour as it rockets towards the $300 million mark. With early estimates pointing to a $2.7 million Friday, it's now on track to have a three day haul of roughly $10 million. Surprisingly, Let's Be Cops has moved up the charts and will likely finish in second place ahead of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (which should reach something like $5.2 million). By the end of the weekend though, Guardians of the Galaxy will have around $294 million in total and should hit $300 million by roughly next Saturday or Sunday. While it would be easy to dismiss the Marvel movie's success as luck based on the fact that competition is almost non-existent, bear in mind that it opened five weeks ago, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - which originally took the #1 spot from it - hasn't had anywhere near the same level of staying power. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is pretty much a distant memory by this point too...

They really did a good job planning it's release though, I remember when it was set to release in July at first.

"bear in mind that it opened five weeks ago, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - which originally took the #1 spot from it - hasn't had anywhere near the same level of staying power."

I can't wait a month to see trolls saying it didn't have any competition, just like people forgot Río 2 came out after Cap2 (a SEQUEL to a ANIMATED movie)

@KingGroot

You've got a good point there Groot. Marvel needs to give us those Phase 3 titles now!

While TWS and DOFP were the best "films", GOTG was my personal favorite out of this year's CBMs! Here's hoping next year is even better!

I saw GOTG 3 times at the cinema. It was one of the best CBM's ever. It deserves all of its success and even more. You should listen to KingGroot, he has a very strong point.

Next year's films are going to be great obviously seeing that everyone's anticipating Avengers and etc. but 2016 will just be down right insane.

@Omarvls

Why? Because they aren't well known? I don't believe in bull like that. Good word of mouth goes a long way. That's why TMNT didn't do as well even though they are way more recognizable, perhaps not anymore though.

Funny how people were referring to TMNT as competition until it got knocked down to the number 2 spot. Lol.

Oh well, Marvel FTW

@Dingbat- Well actually yea... Seeing that that's where most of the talk and complaints (from trolls) came from , "This movie will bomb, people are not going to pay and go see a Talking Raccoon and Tree they know nothing about."

I'm really impressed on how Marvel knows when to pick their movie dates. They barley have competition when their movies drop.
