James Gunn Talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Casting; Wants To Adapt THUNDERBOLTS

Writer and director James Gunn talks briefly about what other comic books he'd like to adapt for the big screen, comments on whether he has freedom to cast whomever he likes in Guardians of the Galaxy, and reveals that he has a "long, long list" of choices for Rocket Raccoon.

Talking at the "Celluloid Heroes" panel at this weekend's MorrisonCon in Las Vegas, Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn was quizzed about exactly how much freedom he has with casting the Marvel Studios movie. "It's not cast-dependent. We could make the movie with unknowns if we wanted to," he revealed. "I can't talk too much about this, because Marvel will kill me!" Of course, there's one character in particular that fans care more about that the rest. Rocket Raccoon. "There's such a long, long list for all our casting choices, we've barely begun."

Finally, he revealed which other properties he would like to adapt. "There's only four comics properties that ever interested me in turning them into movies," Gunn declared. "One was 'We3.' The others were 'Thunderbolts,' 'Hit Monkey'...and 'Guardians Of The Galaxy.'" Marvel Studios don't own an awful lot of their characters, but a Thunderbolts movie (with the right roster) is a definite possibility! Which of these properties would you be most interested in seeing become a reality on the big screen from Gunn? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

It would be cool to see Thunderbolts after they do the Masters of Evil thing and in a setup toward a Civil War flick.

Regarding who you cast, I think it's going to be interesting with who they bring on. I think they need three big name people in order to sell the movie to the general public (*Salutes* "General Public").

But there have only been three movies ever to gross an opening weekend over 60 million in August and those three barely did $200 million domestically. So you have to be careful about getting big people because let's be honest, the movie is not going to bring in that much money compared to the other Marvel franchises.

Thunderbolts. If they go with the current team from the Thunderbolts comics for Marvel NOW! Red Hulk, Deadpool, Venom, Electra, & The Punisher. And I hope Marvel cast Nathan Fillion as Star-Lord.

Hit Monkey huh? They'd need to get Deadpool back first, b/c a Deadpool cameo would be necessary. Still, Thunderbolts would be awesome. They could introduce Zemo in Cap 2 then lead Thunderbolts.

The key to this film will be finding the right people to play Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon. They're really the prime characters of the '08 Guardians. Get the right people to play them and half your casting worries are gone.
