Kevin Feige Discusses Future Plans for THANOS; Remains Mum On GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Confirming that a new actor may be sought out for the Mad Titan's next appearance, which may not be in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, check out what Kevin Feige says about Thanos!

MTV Splash Page recently caught up with the mastermind behind Marvel's ever-expanding shared cinematic universe, Kevin Fiege, to discuss the future of Marvel's The Avengers big mid-credits surprise. Revealing that plans have been set in stone for Thanos, Feige keeps mum on reports that the Mad Titan will next appear in Guardians of the Galaxy. Also commenting on casting for the plum villain, Feige explains:

“There's a great track record now about lobbing something in at the last moment to get the audience buzzing. Particularly when it came to Thanos, [we knew] that most people in that audience had no idea who that purple guy was — but they could clearly tell he was important, and knew if they asked the two or three people sitting next to them, somebody would know who he was.”

“Clearly, there's a purpose to us putting him in the end of that movie. We do have plans for him. I wouldn't say we ever feel the need to rush anything one way or the other. We succeeded in Phase One because we stuck to our guns and stuck to the plan. That plan took place over many, many years and it ultimately paid off. I see Phase Two unfolding in the same way of us taking our time, us doing what's right for each individual movie, while folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three.”

Although actor/stuntman Damion Poiter was the man behind Thanos' cinematic debut, a new actor will likely be sought out for the villain's future appearances. “I think we feel pretty free to recast. That was cast for literally that one shot. Depending on what the role requires from future movies, we'll go from there.”

“Suddenly, you have a million people who had never heard of an Infinity Gauntlet or a Mad Titan learning those terms. I love that. I love when the experience goes beyond the movie theater and encourages people to look deeper into our universe. I was equally excited by the notion that people went out and tried shawarma for the first time,”
he added with a laugh.

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

Directed by James Gunn from a screenplay by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. While a director and ensemble cast have yet to be announced, “Guardians of the Galaxy” will assemble on August 1, 2014. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and the currently-untitled sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers,” the third highest grossing film of all time, on May 1, 2015.

"...folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three."

That's cool. I still think they kinda did it with Loki's staff. Maybe that's why Thanos will involve Earth in his plans in the first place.

Mind gem!

Awesome! Can't wait to see Thanos in more films. He's my favorite villain of all time. Dude doesn't bat an eye when he's talking to beings as powerful as Galactus, instead he makes a deal with them. Seriously, he is one of the coolest villains ever.

I can't wait to see Thanos in GOTG, and The Avengers 2. I say Michael Ironside, Kevin Conroy, or James Earl Jones should voice Thanos.

My two choices are still Michael Ironside or Keith David...why u ask?:

Ironside already proved he can make his voice sound deep and menacing by playing none other than Darksied on Superman TAS and JL shows. give him a shot to voice Thanos and he would have played the greatest threat to 2 different CB Universes: {skip to 1:13 mark}

Get Keith David to go back into Goliath mode from Gargoyles and hed be great for Thanos...his voice and the roar { 0:21 } he did on that show was boss and showed goliath can go to some pretty dark places voice wise, wether it was himself or his clone Thailog:

I would think they wouldn't want an actor with a recognizable voice. When you hear Thaos speak, they should want you to here Thanos, not [insert actor] as Thanos.

When you watch the movie, you want to see and hear Thanos, not Keith David, Clive Owen, Ian McKellen, ect. You really don't want to hear a voice that's already prominently associated with other prominent characters.

@MARVELPSYCHO79 and brazilianbatman, here's the thing. Phase 3 doesn't kick off until 2016 and Avengers 3 won't come out until 2018, at the earliest. They've already shown us Thanos, so I can't see them holding off for 6 years (minimum) before they really use him in the movies.

OdinsBeard - 9/20/2012, 2:24 PM
Bane2099@ great idea. he would make and awesome Blade (also a spot on luke cage but he's getting old). here's my issues, let me know what you think...

there's really no room for Blade in the MCU. i don't understand why they haven't used him better in the comics. with this whole vampire craze thing going on you'd think Marvel would capitalize on their own vampire character that happens to actually be cool. they had him on the x-men for a few issues but then forgot about it. he should be on secret avengers, new avengers, x-force, or the new thunderbolts but for some reason we don't see him anywhere. and it's because of this that i really don't get how he factors into the MCU. he could be relevant to the comics but they choose to ignore him.

does marvel even have the blade rights?

plus i think Disney is racist and will avoid a black lead character at all costs. (i'm white, if that counts for anything)

I say, save Ironside for Darkseid.

In fact, as cool as a celebrity VA would be, why don't we go for a professional VA like Jamieson Price, Kyle Hebert, Steve Blum, or Fred Tatasciore.

Not only would it probably save Marvel some money, it would most likely give the VA a boost in Hollywood, and it give us a better chance for a great Thanos performance.

Though now that I think of it, here's an option for Thanos: Michael Sheen (House from "The Doctor's Wife")

Can't believe that Marvel is talking about Phase 2, and 3, while DC has yet to get anything off the ground that isn't Batman or Superman, and doesn't suck *cough* Green Lantern *cough*

Yes marvel does own the rights to Blade, they switched back about the same time as The Punisher rights, just didnt get as much news as Punisher did.

And to me, it does seem as if Disney and/or Marvel are holdin back at having a film with a strong black lead, besides Nick Fury, but he's still more a supporting character. Dont know if its racism or hesitation they think general audiences may not connect with it, but they should atleast take chance and see for themselves.

Javier Bardem....Friendo, listen to him in No Country for Old Men. Perfect pitch and delivery for what I think Thanos should sound like.
