Kevin Feige On Why GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Was Greenlit; Seemingly Confirms Thanos

Possibly confirming the Mad Titan's inclusion in Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige has explained why the interstellar superhero team-up is moving forward! Check it out!

Akin to Joss Whedon teasing Marvel's The Avengers untitled sequel while promoting the original box office behemoth in Japan, a few weeks ago, Marvel Studios' president of production made an effort to tease the 2014 movie coming before The Avengers reassemble; Guardians of the Galaxy. In yet another rough translation, via Japanese blog Nifty, Kevin Feige seemingly explains why the Guardians were greenlit, among other things.

During the Q&A session published only three days ago, Kevin Feige revealed the reason he and the studio are moving forward with Guardians of the Galaxy is because he “wanted to do something with it space.” He continues, “I've got a story I wanted to tell the world [that is] not directly related with the characters of "The Avengers," [until?] a little later.” While the Guardians & The Avengers aren't exactly “related,” it's strongly believed the former movie will lead directly into the latter's upcoming sequel in 2015; hence “a little later.”

Moving along, that response prompted the interviewer to bring up the otherworldly villain, Thanos, who made his live-action debut during Marvel's The Avengers mid-credits stinger. After being asked flat out would the Mad Titan appear in Guardians of the Galaxy, Feige apparently grins before saying, “I'm out (laughs) of course, because there is meaning [to the credits stinger].” Considering the so-far confirmed Guardians roster includes characters linked to Thanos, his inclusion is almost inevitable. However, today it's seemingly been confirmed.

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

From a screenplay by Nicole Perlman and Chris McCoy, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. While a director and ensemble cast have yet to be announced, “Guardians of the Galaxy” will assemble on August 1, 2014. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and the currently-untitled sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers,” the third highest grossing film of all time, on May 1, 2015.

I can't wait for this!!

Marvel is giving us a far out sci-fi space opera action-adventure featuring Thanos and a gun toting raccoon.

We are too spoiled.

not necassarily, A3 could be them fighting a team of villains. they each have a 1 vs 1 battle so they cant fight as they usually do.

thanos could well become the greatest comic book villain ever to grace the big screen, this film will make money if they put thanos in it,just like spider-man 3 did when it was revealed that we would see venom.(even though it was a disappointing 30 minute section in a overall disappointing movie)

august 2014 seems so far away.

I don't want Thanos in Avengers 2, and all of Joss Whedon's comments about going smaller and more personal wouldn't fit with him either. Better to leave him building up to Avengers 3 and collecting the Infinity Gems in the background of the films until then. But sure... Let Guardians of the Galaxy lay out his plan... Just don't put it into action until A3.

could you post an image of an "r-rated thanos killing",i don't think i've ever seen one.

How is Avengers 2 supposed to be more personal...if theres a giant all powerful monster lurking around bent on destroying the whole universe?

I like the idea of going smaller in the sequel. That way we can really see the team plan coordinate with each other.

In the first Avengers at the end it was cool because they were combining powers on the fly in the heat of the moment.

In the sequel I want someone to break the Avengers, push them harder than they ever have been pushed as a team.

And honestly I would be VERY OK if they kept the same roster. Too many characters would mess it up. Who ever they add/drop Hulk, Thor, Cap, and Iron Man HAVE to be on the team.
DCMarvelFreshman
DCMarvelFreshman - 8/26/2012, 8:24 AM
Yeah I honestly think people are taking the "smaller, personal" comments from Whedon too literal. While it is possible that Thanos won't be the villain, there is a story that can be told more "smaller, personal" with him.

Guardians of the Galaxy = the next John Carter. This movie is going to bleed millions from Marvell and Disney. Only hard core basement dwelling fan boys have any interest in seeing the space adventures of squirrel boy and tree-man.

LOL @the people complaining about Thanos being in THE AVENGERS 2.

People seem to forget that Thanos also played a pivotal part in THE AVENGERS as he was the one that gave Loki the scepter armed with the Mind Gem and the Chitauri army, but was still behind the scenes throughout the movie until the mid-credits scene. So the same thing could be for GOTG.

Relax people.

@Theunderdog nice roster. Who do you see as starhawk (he was in both the older series and did appear in a bunch of the new series).

As for the article...i think i was probably a given that Thanos would appear in Guardians...unless they have another end credit scene in guardians that ties Thanos to someone else (Warlock perhaps).

Are the comments about the so far announced roster that of the writer of this article or from Kevin himself? I hope its from Kevin and means we havent been told the full roster yet

Tainted87 - 8/26/2012, 8:36 AM
I hate to say it, but GotG doesn't have the fanbase required - I mean the series proper has only been out since 08, and the original line-up from the 60s that no one cares about - will not exist here.

They might as well just make their own original movie, taking whatever direction they want.

The same thing was said from a lot of doubters about the Avengers before it came out, that it would only appeal to hardcore fans.........

Just saying...........

@ people complaining about how far fetched GOTG will be, it makes just a much sense a millioniare dressing up as a bat and a tenage boy getting bitten by a spider and getting its abilities.

Its a comic book movie. Marvel is trying something new, give them credit where credit is due. You can only have so man comic book characters having a family pass away and deciding to put on skin tight spandex to avenge them or decide to save the world.

@Tainted87 I'm going to need for you to change your pic. I actually thought there was a bug on the screen. -_- lol

@SageMode I try not to pay attention to people like PuyGuy and TheWonderer. They always have something negative to say, yet they are always on article dealing with The Avengers....

I think GOTG could be a could movie but let's all save judgement until we get a director, cast, and a trailer.
Tainted87
Tainted87 - 8/26/2012, 8:44 AM
I've got no problem with a movie being far-fetched.... but I think of it like trying to turn a Star Wars fanfic into a theatrical release.... minus the expectations involved with a Star Wars movie.

Why GotG? Why not a movie about Ms Marvel and the Kree? the Inhumans and the Kree?

thanos is not too big a villain for the avengers 2,we don't even know if he'll even have the infinity gauntlet,i know there is a prop but he may gain it at a later date.

the avengers 3 could still up the villain(s)raito we still haven't seen the likes of kang, ultron or the masters of evil.

threat levels go up & down all the time in comics, take the infinity gauntlet storyline in 1991 for example there has been lessr threats in storylines that followed after that event.

If they put time in the script and get a good director. It could be epic like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

Ps. I was about to smack my screen too when i saw the bug. Then i realised its inside the screen. ;)

The one vital part of that equation you are missing is marketing. Disney marketed John Carter for shit. ALL of the preview reels failed with audiences. Marketing is everything.

Whedon is a huge Star Wars fan, so I could see him making Avengers 2 like The Empire Strikes Back, with a down ending, the heroes beaten and scattered. Only problem with this is that from Avengers 2 we get individual films of Iron Man, Thor, etc. So unless they figure out how to have a down ending and then do solo films leading to Avengers 3 redemption, it wouldn't work. But that's what I'd try to conceive.
