James Gunn Talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 Start Date, Return Of 'Nebula', And More

James Gunn recently took part in a couple of different Q&A's, and the Guardians of the Galaxy director has offered up some more details about both the current state of the screenplay and when exactly production is expected to begin. He also teases plans for Karen Gillan's Nebula. Check it out!

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is still two years away, but writer and director James Gunn is keeping fans updated via his various social media accounts. After recently revealing that he's turned in the treatment to Marvel and will meet with them on Friday in order to start working on the screenplay next week, Gunn added that he's currently 70 pages in and called his pitch to Marvel Studios the best experience he's had with one to date. It's still unclear what the sequel will focus on.

He also confirmed that Karen Gillan's Nebula will make a return, adding that they may have this time found a way to avoid shaving the head of the former Doctor Who star (which you have to imagine will make her more willing to reprise the role). Interestingly, Gunn also told fans that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will begin production next February and will shoot at Pinewood Atlanta Studios. The first movie was shot in London and featured a lot of British actors and extras. Both Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War are being shot in Atlanta, so this does make sense.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set to be released on May 5th, 2017. What are you hoping to see?

Of course she's returning. I expect she'll play a similar role to the comic storyline.

Yes!
The villains were the worst part of Guardians, Nebula was turned into a caricature and despite her fierce look, she wasn't written as someone to fear.

So excited she's returning and with a more prominent villainous role.
Karen was really good with what she had though.

And yeah, I applaud her for shaving her head, it's not an easy thing for a girl to do,
I shaved half of mine in a Natalie Dormer style and I cried for days.

So if they can find an easier way for Karen to do that then I'm all for it, she has gorgeous red hair and her wig on Selife wasn't great.

I hope they let her just keep her long hair this time. Nebula did have hair before so it's not a stretch that she let it grow.

But maybe I just want to see Karen Gillian with jet black hair. Rowr!

@ pending I disagree with Thanos being a dumbass on the contrary Thanos makes that statement on purpose so he will get a desired result between both women.

@Pending: Evil people always do that. It's how they play their minions off of each other.

Anwyay, I thought Gillan shaving her head was her idea.

Agree with @Cherrybomb

Villain’s were the worst part of this movie.......Although Thanos was cool...

Marvel's biggest problem is the Villain’s in their movies....

GotG didn't make Thanos look like a dumbass; he looked more like an sadistic tyrant who is so confident in his power that he says whatever he wants because he has no fear of betrayal.

In addition to what cerrone6 said...

Now, criticizing something you don't understand - that's the way to make someone look like a dumbass.

They need charisma though, they need to be shown to be a force to be reckoned with not just physically.
Malekith could've been a terrifying and memorable villain.

Christopher Nolan in his Batman movies (which I can't say I love) managed to make bring very memorable villains throughout his 3 movies.

Red Skull, pretty damn good villain. Same for Winter Soldier

I wouldn't mind a Gamora recast. Or have Nebula take care of her.

@CherryBomb

Yeah, Nolan made his villains memorable (with the exception of Talia), but he never made his hero memorable. His Batman was never on the same level as R'as, Joker or Bane.

Nolan and Marvel have the same problem on opposite ends of the spectrum. Nolan made great villains , bad heroes. Marvel makes great heroes, and for the most part, underwhelming villains (except Loki, WS, Grant Ward (and more from AOS)).

@JohnCarter

If anything, the fact they've been introduced before means it's harder to make them more memorable.
Scarecrow, Bane, Joker as Ra's are memorable and to a lot of people will always be remembered by Nolan's version of them.

The villains in Marvel could've equally been memorable if they had been portrayed as such with the right material.

Aside from Star Lord, Groot, and Rocket, everybody in GOTG was walking around with some bad-ass rep that they couldn't live up to. Gamora was supposed to be the most dangerous assassin in the universe but had to keep getting rescued. Drax wasn't much of a "destroyer" as he was constantly getting his ass kicked. He was only good at destroying minions less powerful than him. I don't even know what Nebula can do, she was constantly hating on Gamora, and don't even get me started on Ronan. Big talk, that guy.

Honestly, I feel like the villains in GOTG were good enough villains for a movie like this. This was a movie that had to introduce five main heroes without prior solo films and had to get you to like them. In that context, it makes sense to focus more on the heroes and have the villains take a bit of a backseat. Like I said, I feel like the villains were done well for a movie like this and served their roles well in the story.

Yes, Loki is a memorable villain, I agree, although in many ways he's been turned I to an anti hero.
The stakes feel much higher when a villain has more of a presence and intimidation factor to them, that's all.

Great points! Especially with Gamora, she was just Black Widow in space.

I'm just crazy about the actress that played Nebula. She's so intense. No matter how you feel about Oculus, her sense of presence just dominated the film.

"Gamora was supposed to be the most dangerous assassin in the universe but had to keep getting rescued."

I have to agree with this to a certain extent. She could have been handled better.

"Drax wasn't much of a "destroyer" as he was constantly getting his ass kicked. He was only good at destroying minions less powerful than him."

Well, it kind of makes sense that he can primarily "destroy" enemies that are less powerful than him. He got his ass handed to him by Ronan, who in the movie/in the MCU was simply stronger than Drax (regardless of wether their respective power levels are comic accurate).

"I don't even know what Nebula can do"

Apparently she's a rather skilled, ruthless fighter. Also she can take a lot of punishment due to her weird enhancements.

"don't even get me started on Ronan. Big talk, that guy"

Well, he was a feared fanatic war criminal. He brutally executed people. He slaughtered many civilians. He beat up Drax regularly. He snapped the neck of Thanos's personal assistant right in fron of the big man himself. He obtained an Infinity Stone, after which he talked smack to Thanos and basically promised to make him his bitch. Then he went on attacking a whole planet. He took a missile to the face and laughed about it. He crashed with his ship and laughed about it. He came damn close to wiping out all life on Xandar. It took the power of the Infinity Stone to finally stop him.

I would argue that he was a little more than just "big talk".
