GOTG VOL. 3 Star Zoe Saldaña Says Marvel "Feels Like A Cult" When It Comes To Maintaining Secrecy

The teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released during CCXP Brazil this past Thursday, giving us our first look at the returning Gamora Variant who was introduced in Avengers: Endgame in action.

Zoe Saldaña wasn't required to keep her role in James Gunn's threequel under wraps (she even shared behind-the-scenes photos to Instagram during production), but Marvel Studios' strictly-enforced secrecy policy does often make it difficult for actors to discuss upcoming projects, and it sounds like the Star Trek actress may have become a little frustrated with the process.

During her appearance on the latest episode of Hot Ones, Saldaña was asked about the studio's intense security levels, and acknowledged that there are "advantages and disadvantages" to working under those circumstances.

"When you work for Marvel, it feels like a cult, everybody’s like, 'What’s going on? I’m dressed in green after four hours in makeup, we must be shooting something, what is it?' [Laughs] That has advantages and disadvantages, the advantages are you savor the surprise for the end, and you don’t ruin it and the audience is able to have an amazing adventure when they go to the movies to watch it. The disadvantage is mainly for the actor, because you don’t know what you’re getting, you don’t know where you’re going, you don’t know what you’re saying, you don’t know what’s going to happen, and that can be a little nerve-wracking."

Though some do seek out spoilers before seeing a movie, the majority of people wouldn't want the plot of a film ruined before sitting down to watch it, so Marvel Studios' going to such lengths to keep its secrets for as long as possible is certainly understandable - even if it does impose some limitations on the actors involved.

From what we understand, Gamora will have a very important part to play in GOTG Vol. 3, and her relationship with both Peter Quill and Nebula is expected to be a main focus.

In Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

James Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter and Maria Bakalova.

Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

@GhostDog - right they have been extremely bad at keeping secrets for damn near four years now. Literally every film since endgame whole plot has been leaked months before their release date.

@Taonrey -

Because of the pandemic. Visual effects artist worked from home and so did alot of post production workers.

Not to mention they ramped up projects and outsourced visual effect shots to other studios💁

@AmazingFILMporg - the leaks issue has been a problem even before the pandemic, far from home, infinity war, A&E,CM,Endgame plots were all leaked. Think Ragnarok got leaked as well

I think that's gonna start to end. After no way home they're starting to see the advantage of having their plots leak.

They’re doing a pretty piss poor job of it lately. Gone are the days they hit us with twists like this

(Iron Man 3 is an unappreciated gem that gets better with every rewatch)

@dracula - Eh, I’m over it. Stark’s arc throughout the Infinity Saga was incredible and looking back now, I wouldn’t change a thing.

I get the need for secrecy, but you have to wonder how these guys do not realize that they more than once spoil these things themselves. And I'm not referring to Holland or Ruffalo here.

I mean, with Avengers 3 and 4 being a two-parter, everyone more or less knew how Infinity War was going to end. Granted, it was still f#ckin' awesome, but the ending was to be expected.

Now with 5 and 6 being the same? Gee wiz, I'm stroking my chin full of wonder, trying to figure out how Kang's Dynasty is going to end, seeing how its sequel is already, oh I don't know, Secret F#ckin' Wars?!

@DrReedRichards - THere are very few people who will pass on a movie because it wasn't spoiled and a whole lot more who will if it is.

She had an interesting interview the other day saying how she felt stuck artistically in these big budget blockbusters. She definitely said she enjoys what she does and the people she works with but felt like she can’t get past these roles and constantly feeling stuck to the same sort of character unable to expand. Between this and sort of getting that “idk wtf is going on” from this I definitely starting to agree more with the likes of Tarantino when it comes to movie stardom not being a thing but the characters being the star…

@EskimoJ - definitely agree but you can’t turn down the money or the hope for fame. Problem is the studios just want more of the same from them.

I love the secrecy and actively try to avoid any spoilers or even gossip. I had no idea about the snap and dusting at the end of Infinity War and no idea about the ‘five years later’ in End Game.

Both were AMAZING to experience in the theater for the first time.

@CookieHound - not even after Ruffalo gave everything away that everyone dies in this one? Or when he spoiled the first 10 minutes or so live when he was watching the premiere of the movie? Kevin Feige really shut up Ruffalo after that.

The actors should get to know the material at least by the day of filming. Shouldn’t have them shoot a scene without knowing the full details.

But yeah, also shouldn’t have actors spoiling the movie during press junkets and interviews. Think about the audience

Fandom, creation, marketing…. You could have stopped at “feels like a cult”. Debating the greatness of the MCU with a fanboy, is like debating god with a religious person.

Luckily most people I talk about on the topic of the MCU (or cbms in general), it stays civil.

Many of today's filmmakers think emulating the surprise twits of The Empire Strikes Back is the way to success. JJ Abrams of course tried to insert dumb twists in his Star Wars fan fiction movies and they were sad jokes.

Feige seems obsessed with the kind of secrecy that was once reserved for Lucas and Spielberg movies. But sometimes that secrecy might hurt the moment and box office. Spider-Man No Way Home could've had a glorious opening celebration with Maguire and Garfield. But they weren't even there. And yet everyone knew they were in the movie and knowing didn't hurt the moment they appeared.
