GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Reflects On Being Fired By Disney; New Still Released

It's easy to forget, but it was back in 2018 that Disney fired James Gunn after some offensive Tweets from the past resurfaced. The filmmaker had talked a lot on social media about politics, prompting those with opposing viewpoints to dig up some of his tasteless jokes in an effort to cancel him...and it worked. Briefly.

Warner Bros. didn't hesitate to hire Gunn to write and direct The Suicide Squad, and after vocal backlash from fans and Guardians of the Galaxy cast members alike (along with timely intervention from Marvel Studios), the filmmaker returned to helm Vol. 3.

It's unlikely the movie would have happened without him and, after delays caused by Gunn's DC work and the pandemic, we'll finally get to watch the movie early next month.

Talking to Empire, the DC Studios co-CEO reflected on his shock firing.

"We went through this journey where we went into the belly of the beast, and I was thrown out – and the people that I gave life to by hiring, saved me and brought me back into the fold," he tells the site. "They pulled me onto the life raft. And now we’re able to finish all of this together."

"It was hard," he said of having to say goodbye to Guardians of the Galaxy. "But the things I think of from that time are the love that I got from my family and friends. I think of how Zoë Saldaña and her husband came over to fix me a meal the night after it happened. How Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff came over to just hang out with me, to be my friend."

A new still from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has also been released with Drax, Nebula, and Mantis looking more than a little worse for wear.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova.

Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

I look at Antman as a definite L for both Antman and the MCU, maybe gotg 3 will at least be in part 1&2’s range.

You know what’s weird, I acknowledge that I have bad taste. Like, I enjoyed Antman 3. But it sucked. I def think there was too much comedy in Thor 4, but i liked Gorr. One uncle fester meme don’t make him uncle fester in the movie. But oh my goodness did Zeus disappoint, and Thor fighting people but the temple being destroyed, was full re***d.

loved Stormbreaker being jealous haha

@TheWalkingCuban - I do not like the slapstick comedy. It turns me off to super hero films.

@Forthas - When done right you can inject a little comedy into even the darkest comic book movies.Take The Dark Knight for example it had some but like you said it was not slapstick comedy or even over the top where it took you out of darkness of the tone.

@TheWalkingCuban - Yeah, this is normal, actually. Fan culture has normalized polarized reactions (everything's either the best ever or the worst ever) but most films are somewhere in between. I haven't seen AM3 yet, but look forward to renting it when I can.

@ClintThaHamster - it’s enjoyable, but man if I had a word for ol blueface, it’s this: TALKS. TOO. DANG. MUCH. Pick one of those 4 “he’s too?” Correct. He’s too.

@Forthas - yeah slapstick died with Leslie Nielsen

Has no place in superhero movies. Well…

Anyway yes I agree

@TheWalkingCuban -
I love stuff that a lot of people hate, like Iron Man 2 and even the whole Mandarin fake out. I liked Love & Thunder OK but it was over the top.

Haven't seen AM3 though.

@pitbull76 - I would not like a film - especially a superhero - film that had NO comedy, but it should

1) be subtle and or ironic FOR EXAMPLE...Bruce Wayne's quip in Batman Begins "Does it come in Black?"

2) not be based on silliness FOR EXAMPLE...Thor is explaining to his old hammer why it should not be jealous of his new one.

3) should be appropriate and organic to the story. FOR EXAMPLE Joker's quip to Batman in the Dark Knight "You complete me!"

@Goldboink - exactly. Personally, I love anything with Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man.

@Forthas - The Joker’s comment was not a joke in my opinion. They are yin and yang and it was key to the story. An example of humor that worked in the movie was

@Forthas - I don’t recall so much slapstick comedy in Thor 4, just goofy comedy.
Forthas
Forthas - 4/10/2023, 1:44 PM
@RolandD - I thought it was a joke...and not. You are right they are eternally bonded togther and in the jokers view he is being serious, but at the same time many people define the Joker as being "in love" with Batman thus the very "meta" joke taken from Jerry McGuire and the context of that was someone who was in love with the person they were saying it to.
Forthas
Forthas - 4/10/2023, 2:04 PM
@RolandD - I take it you mean slapstick as physical comedy. I think there was in the beginning of the movie when he fought with the Guardians of the Galaxy to save that city...

...his weight loss montage

...those stupid goats...

...that really silly montage with Jane Foster when he was remebering them as a couple...

...and some of the scenes with Korg.

I tend to call ALL goofy comedy slapstick whether I should or not...so sue me!
RolandD
RolandD - 4/10/2023, 6:35 PM
@Forthas - I’m going to have to agree with you now. Some of those were slapstick.
RolandD
RolandD - 4/10/2023, 6:36 PM
@Forthas - I’ll take Nolan’s humor in the Batman movies over most of the humor in love and thunder any day.

@Forthas - It's ironic because of the company that owns marvel but I like to call that humor Mickey comedy. mouse
Forthas
Forthas - 4/10/2023, 9:44 PM
@pitbull76 - Whatever they call it, all of the comic book film makers are guilty of it and I don't know why. Marvel made one of the great comic book films - Captain America Winter Soldier. The best CBMs tend to not have that kind of humor.

pitbull76 - 4/10/2023, 10:16 PM
@Forthas - Nah I totally get what you're saying I still have not see Thor love and thunder for that reason.

I'm so glad James gets to finish what he started he took a comic property that the general audience had no clue of and even some not all comic books readers was like wtf gotg really. To his credit he made it work and successful I have a feeling that we are going to go on a emotional rollercoaster ride with part 3 like few marvel movies have done for me.I for one can not wait to see how he wraps up what he started.

Those James Gunn tweets were so cringe. But yeah he's right. His celebrity friends vouching for him publicly really helped, along with WB being sort of desperate to get another MCU guy to help them with DC. Gunn said he was originally offered Superman. But I think the Suicide Squad sequel was clearly the safer way for him to earn credibility back. Like in hindsight, Joss Whedon would've been MUCH better off, declining to finish the JL movie, and just did the Batgirl movie.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - I agree the tweets were not the best of moves it just sucks we live in the age of the internet where you are accountable and judged on something you did years ago.I mean people do change and grow.Im 46 and did and had certain views in my 20s that looking back am very ashamed and embarrassed of I'm just lucky the internet was not as accessible or available like today.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - Joss was gonna do a Wonder Woman movie or show back in the day but that got canned and thank god, I heard the script was VERRRYYYYY questionable.
99OPTIMISTPRIME
99OPTIMISTPRIME - 4/10/2023, 9:22 AM
@pitbull76 - The age thing is actually where James Gunn got off really lucky. Because those old tweets were made when he was like in his early 40s. So did the Guardians of the Galaxy success, magically change his sense of humor, or is he just more careful now, because he has to be? But who knows, public shame can definitely help force people to change.

Friends? Love? Disney does not compute. They’re already busy searching for a lesbian James gunn and a yo gabba gabba writer for guardians 4.

@GhostDog -

Yeah, they were cringe but he has evolved as a person from that time and he has said his regrets. Everyone deserves a second chance, but he likely won't have another if anything else comes to light.

That said, he isn't the worst case about Disney firing someone. Johnny Depp didn't do anything bad, he was even a victim of both abuse and a campaign of diffamation, and he was fired all the same and Disney didn't do anything to atone for their mistake. Give him his one million alpacas !

Pay it forward, give Jhoss Whedon another chance, James.
