GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Looks Set For $120M Opening Weekend At Domestic Box Office

Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters this weekend, and James Gunn's emotional send-off looks set to end The Super Mario Bros. Movie's BO reign with a $120 Million domestic debut.

Marvel Studios' second Phase 5 film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, blasts into theaters this weekend, and the latest box office estimates are in.

James Gunn's emotional trilogy-topper is looking set for a respectable, if not universe-shattering $120 million domestic debut. This would take it past the first GOTG's $94 million, but fall quite a bit short of Vol. 2's $146 million.

Some analysts believe Vol. 3 might fall short of those projections and land closer to $110 million - $118 million, but it should still comfortably knock The Super Mario Bros. Movie off the No. 1 spot, which it has held for the past four weeks.

Globally, Vol. 3 is expected to hit $250 million.

It's worth noting that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened big before suffering a record-breaking second-week drop which it never managed to recover from. GOTG Vol. 3 does have the benefit of more positive reviews (it's holding at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it's going to be very interesting to see how it performs over the next few weeks.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

Yea, $110-120m seems pretty in line with how tickets have been selling for this one. Expecting the strong WoM to carry this nicely throughout the Summer and break the mold of Marvel's recent frontloadness. Seems like this is becoming a new favorite in the MCU for many people.

But yea, combined with the $130-140m overseas tracking, this is probably set to become the lowest grossing Guardians movie. Damn. We're really past the Golden Age of comic book movies it seems.

@WakandanQueen - yeah they need to revaluate how much they're spending on these movies, because they aren't as popular as they use to be. That's Disney fault but they made their bed.

What's the best poster for this movie to use as a wallpaper for my phone?

we will know by what 2nd weekend looks like, but if this ends up being the lowest earning GOTG movie, Marvel is really in trouble.

@mountainman - $500 million would be a success under the circumstances. The damage done to the MCU brand the last 2 years has been substantial.

@GeneralZod - I’m pretty sure it’ll earn more than that. $500 million would be a disaster. $700 million would still be a disappointment.

A phrase I NEVER thought I'd say in my life: "I swear, if anything bad happens to that raccoon, otter, walrus, or the bunny with the clamp jaw, I'm going to be SUPER pissed!"

The era of slapstick may finally and mercifully be coming to an end...just as Warner brothers hires the pioneer of modern slapstick to run their DC Universe. When it comes to decision making at that studio, the more things change the more they stay the same.

So opening weekend it’s gonna take in more than Shazam 2 total box office? Sounds fair!

Opening weekend is always great, it's the following weeks that matters. Having said that, I'm seeing it Thursday because opening day/night crowds make movie watching next level! When I rewatch on say a Saturday, the crowd is totally different. It's weird lol

It'll do around 700m. Thats about the hunber for most of the bigger franchises post pandemic. We aren't gonna see back to back billions for a little while.

A few will break it but the whole box office has been reset to around 2008 numbers.

@Toonstrack - Yup, we are back to movies hitting the billion mark being the exception and not the rule...however, tickets are A LOT more expensive than 15 years ago, which means that actually A LOT less people are going to movie theathers.
You'll have your Marios and Mavericks, but I think the best days of the industry are long gone.

@TheHumanSpider2 - seems tv the future, well it will be once someone forces a cable like streaming bundle and we're pretty much back to what we were before Netflix killed it.

Probably will end up around $600M WW, the studio is keeping Mario on theathers for a few more weeks (they pushed back the digital release TWO MONTHS), and then Flash is coming out...while is making its money back, it will be yet another Marvel movie underperforming, and I dont see The Marvels doing better, let alone [frick]ing KRAVEN.

I think Warner, Sony, and Disney should start to cope with the idea of these movies making mid-00s numbers, they cant keep aproving $200M+ budgets for everything.
