Marvel Studios stole the show at SDCC this year, but many were disappointed about the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 not being officially released. Now, James Gunn explains why.

San Diego Comic-Con is over for another year, and while Warner Bros./DC did debut new trailers for the likes of Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adam, it's probably fair to say that Marvel Studios stole the show with our first look at Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and a series of massive Phase 5 and 6 announcements.

The first teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also screened for those in attendance, but, unfortunately, wasn't officially released online afterwards.

Fans of the crew of intergalactic A-holes were understandably disappointed - especially after the glowing reactions - but director James Gunn has now revealed that he had a very good reason for not wanting the general public to see the footage just yet.

Based on this Tweet, it sounds like we may not have to wait too much longer to see the trailer (or a version of it, anyway) for ourselves. A few low-quality frames have since found their way online showing Mantis dancing and a flashback to Rocket Raccoon's past set to The Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize," but we won't be sharing it here and it's hardly even worth seeking out, to be honest.

Plot details have been kept mostly under wraps, but we do know that Gamora (Zoe Saldana) will be a big part of the movie, and a report from last year indicated that her relationship with Nebula (Karen Gillan) is going to be the main focus. Of course, this Gamora is a Variant of the original who doesn't know any of her teammates, so we can probably expect a very different dynamic between the "sisters" this time.

Saldana and Gillan will be joined by the returning Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Dave Bautista (Drax), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Sean Gunn (Rocket/Kraglin), Vin Diesel (Groot), and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord/Starhawk, with Will Poulter on board as Adam Warlock.

Peacemaker actor Chukwudi Iwuji arrived to the Hall H panel in-costume as The High Evolutionary, making his villainous role official.

makes sense. Besides, if they make everything available online, Comic Con ceases to be special.

I'm surprised they let a Youtube channel record all of the panels.

@thewanderer - that's not true at all, this is strictly for less than 1% of the attendees for sdcc.

@bobevanz - you get my point.

@thewanderer - This is a fair reason. Just look at all the backlash She-Hulk got with the first teaser.

That's understandable.

@Marveladdict - Good brother.
the only thing I am really excited about in the marvel studio movie is Wakanda Forever. Thor's new movie and this, GOG looks goofy and sucks.too much comedic shit.

More goofy and over the top sillier than Vol. 2. Another God awful Love and Thunder. No thanks. Wakanda Forever will take all my money. Going minimum 3 times

@Marveladdict - so now everyone loves it? after the leak everyone on this site was going in on BP2 - people still going nuts about the Ant-Man 3 leak.

@Marveladdict - WASNT DIRECTED AT YOU SO MUCH AS THIS SITE, stupid caps lock...

there was a leak article about BP2, that linked to a reddit post. That got so much hate for the story and plot, now the trailer comes ouut and i see hardly any hate just love, which is fine, but man people swing wildly on this site.

Now what's the excuse for she hulk?
thewanderer
thewanderer - 7/25/2022, 9:49 AM
@Origame - I think the main thing they just need to do with She-Hulk is make her hair less shiny.
Origame
Origame - 7/25/2022, 9:53 AM
@thewanderer - and her face less cartoony
NakedAvenger

@Origame - I don't know whether it's just me, but the movements don't seem natural. Also seems like she's 'floating'- I don't know how to really explain it
Origame
Origame - 7/25/2022, 10:17 AM
@NakedAvenger - yeah. That's an easy sign of poor cgi. Ultimately the creation isn't physically there, so the artist needs to take care to make it feel like it's actually there. A floaty character shows they didn't take that care.

I hope the third guardians can reach the quality of the first one, the sequel sucked.

Also thirsty for more R-Rated stuff from Gunn after the wonderful The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Ich hope he will make another movie for DC.

@Spawnnn - Disagree on Volume 2.

Granted I also think The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were awful, so different tastes I"m sure.

@Spawnnn - Yeah. Vol 2 was ok for me overall, but a lot of the jokes fell flat and I found the "father/son" nonsense to be really forced. "By the way, I gave your mom a brain tumor" was also moronic on several levels. Hopefully, this one has a tighter script.

They also don’t want to overshadow Black Panther I’d imagine. It doesn’t come out until May so I’d expect a teaser in front of BP2 if anything.
suitekid
suitekid - 7/25/2022, 10:15 AM
@Frshcoupe - Considering Marvel usually keeps trailers close to the vest now a days, I wouldn’t be shocked if we have to wait till January/ February when Ant-Man drops.

@suitekid - yes maybe a small teaser followed by a trailer trailer for Super Bowl?

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2 was one of the most fun and awesome times I’ve had at the theaters, always remember how much I laughed and how it blew all my expectations away.

I hope Gunn can repeat that 😭, just don’t make it as silly as Thor L&T , cause that movie wasn’t even funny, I don’t know how Taika went to genuine funny moments in Ragnarok to cringy and unfunny in L&T .
McMurdo
McMurdo - 7/25/2022, 11:07 AM
@MisterDoctor217 - I didn't think Ragnorak was funny either honestly.

I get you, some jokes in Ragnarok are cringy too but at least they were better and not as frequent haha
MisterDoctor217
MisterDoctor217 - 7/25/2022, 10:00 AM
Also was it just me or did the Guardians seem really low energy in L&T? Idk if it was Taika or the actors but they didn’t shine or stand out like they usually do, specially Pratt as Star Lord, he looked tired and just not like before.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 7/25/2022, 10:29 AM
@MisterDoctor217 - it's quite possible that was on purpose. Each one of the guardian's were blipped with the exception of rocket

@MisterDoctor217 - I was just under the impression that they were all just sick and tired of Thor.
SerKurtWagner
SerKurtWagner - 7/25/2022, 11:29 AM
@MisterDoctor217 - IIRC, Gunn was on set to direct them in L&T. And, as others mentioned, they were acting tired because they were so over Thor.

@MisterDoctor217 - They could have been suffering from the long flight to Australia, which causes a large number of physical side effects.
