DARK SHADOWS: First Movie Airs on TCM Tonight

This May will see Johnny Depp portraying vampire Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows. However, the curious can get a feel for what it's all about with tonight's airing of the 1970 film House of Dark Shadows on Turner Classic Movies.

Based on the 1966-71 daytime soap opera Dark Shadows, House of Dark Shadows is basically a retelling of the Barnabas Collins story, only closer in vein (yes, the pun was intended) to producer Dan Curtis' original conception of the character. Curtis' idea was that Barnabas would be a real monster, on the show for about six months and then staked to make way for a new supernatural threat once ratings had risen. What he did NOT expect was the phenomenal response the character would trigger from the audience, which forced the writers to come up with a way to make Barnabas a sympathetic (hence the first reluctant) vampire.

With no restrictions, however, Curtis directed House of Dark Shadows and Barnabas was indeed a monster, albeit one hidden from the rest of the Collins family but with a real blood-sucking agenda.

Says Wikipedia, "Dark Shadows producer Dan Curtis began pitching the idea of a film based on his gothic soap opera hit sometime in 1968. The project was finally given the greenlight at MGM by company president James Aubrey in 1970. Curtis decided to use the original Barnabas storyline as the basis for the film, but with a modified conclusion. The film was shot in six weeks for a budget of $750,000. Principal shooting took place at several historic locations, including the Lyndhurst Estate, where the production had to work around the scheduled public tours of the house. Unrestricted by TV's censors, the film is far more graphically violent than its television counterpart, with dripping vampire bites and bloody deaths. The film was released at the height of the TV show's popularity to great commercial success. The paperback novelization of the film by Marilyn Ross (who had written a series of novels based on the TV show) was published in October 1970. The novel is based on the original script, and contains some scenes which were either cut from the movie, or were never filmed."

Don't let the trailer below fool you: House of Dark Shadows is a highly effective vampire film, and the perfect teaser for Depp/Burton's take on Dark Shadows.

Catch House of Dark Shadows tonight at 10PM Eastern on TCM (Turner Classic Movies)

10 bucks says that this is still better than Burtons. And I want Burtons to be good!
The thing is in the show Barnabus looked like a normal guy, but Burtons he just looks like someone who hasnt slept or cut their fingernails in a month

I'm pretty sure that the long fingernail look is when Depp's Barnabas has vamped out.

House is definitely an effective vampire film. Granted that it's now 42 years old so it can't help but be dated, but it's still pretty creepy and Jonathan Frid's Barnabas shows sides of himself here that he was never allowed to show on television.

There are MANY Dark Shadows comics, Dromeo, the current of which are being published by Dynamite Entertainment.

The best part about what you have told us, Ed, is that it is on TCM so you won't have to sift through the crumby commercials. This will be added to my DVR just as the old Captain America TV movies have been.

If anyone does check House of Dark Shadows out tonight, I wonder if you'd come back and post what you thought of it. I'm very curious what "new" eyes will have to say.

BmanHall, I was a kid, too, when the soap opera ran and I wish I could convey just how big a phenomenon it was. Pretty amazing and for a fan it was incredibly exciting.

I am a virgin to Dark Shadows so you have my word, Ed, that I will let you know how it is as a first timer.

I'm serious when I say that you have built up my anticipation quite a bit. I hope this sparks my interest in the remake.

Obviously, plasticman, what was produced in 1970 for $750,000 is certainly not going to compare to a humongously budgeted 2010 production, but it should serve as an interesting introduction to the concept of Dark Shadows and the vampire Barnabas Collins.

Im definitely gonna DVR this. Ive always liked the old British horror....relied on story rather than special effects, which made for a better movie. Horror nowadays wouldnt scare my 2 yr old.

Worth watching, but sort of an "alternate universe" take on the TV show...Barnabas is more or less your typical movie vamp here rather than the conflicted (though ruthless) soul on the soap

You're talking to a man that searched painstakingly for years for a copy of the Ray Milland/ Frankie Avalon cult classic Panic in the Year Zero. I should be loving every minute of it.
