GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE First Reactions Arrive Following Surprise CinemaCon Screening

Sony Pictures surprised CinemaCon attendees last night with a screening of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and the first reactions are now online. How does this revival stack up to the original movies?

The first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home (understandably) gained most of the attention following last night's CinemaCon presentation, but Sony Pictures had a lot of other fun stuff on display for attendees, including the global premiere of Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

The upcoming movie, which will serve as a direct sequel to the original Ghostbusters films, screened in its entirety for the first time, and social media reactions from those lucky enough to see it are now online.

Though specific plot details were kept to a minimum, most of the reactions were highly positive (no surprises there), with just a few mentions of some minor issues. There was a lot of praise for the cast (nothing about the returning spook-hunters, unfortunately) and director Jason Reitman, who has seemingly succeeded in reviving the franchise for a new generation while retaining the magic of the originals.

From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts have all been confirmed to reprise their roles from the original movies, and they'll be joined by Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Carrie Coon (Fargo), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel).

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is currently set to blast into theaters on November 11, 2021.

The Female Ghostbusters got enough negative reaction, for being a reboot. So a proper Ghostbusters 3 movie, was always gonna be received well, no matter what.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - The female Ghostbusters got mostly positive reactions from the critics; it was audiences who hated it.

I don't think anyone had a problem with it being a reboot, rather, they didn't like it because it wasn't funny.

@Feralwookiee - well lets be honest, the critics didn't give it a positive reaction because it was good. they gave it good reviews because of the optics.

@Feralwookiee - I didn't mind it, although I understand when fans don't get enough of the original cast they are going to whine about it.

@globaltravels - Of course.
My point is, the critics gave it generally positive reviews, for whatever reasons, but audiences overall thought it sucked.

@rkshuttleworth - I don't even think that was a major problem for fans of the original. It wasn't so much of HOW MUCH they were in it, instead of HOW THEY WERE USED in it.
All the cameos were totally pointless imo.

I saw the first one recently and it doesn't hold up so well. Don't let the nostalgia googles fool you but still has its merits and it will remain a staple in pop culture forever. The second one is not so good and we don't talk about the t(hir)urd movie.
So yeah, only needs to be better than the second.

@dirtyscore - What about the first doesn't hold up so well for you?

@MosquitoFarmer - the pacing and the humor. I can forgive the vfx.

The Good
A legit sequel in continuity and a lot of fan service.

The Bad
Sounds like…too much fan service and call backs.

The Ugly
Quotes like this, “ But what I can say is that it’s the best of the series, full stop.” 🙄. Okay Hype McHypeyman. Cool down your proton pack before you burn your face off! 😉

@IronGenesis - I don’t understand when people complain about “fan service”. When it’s absent people complain that the director/ writers “didn’t understand the source material” or “…completely missed the mark”. I thought we all wanted something that was recognizable as to why the original was so great, especially dealing with a direct sequel.

@WruceBayne - the “bad” fan service IMO is when a sequel straight up lifts or retreads on the same joke.

This is going to be Terminator:The Dark Fate of Ghostbusters movies.

@FinnishDude - I have no idea what that's supposed to mean lol.
Dark Fate was a meh movie that didn't revitalize the series to me, while to others it was "the best since Judgment Day".

IMO:

1. The Terminator
2. Judgement Day
3. Salvation
4. SCC
5. T3
6. Genesis
7. Salvation Machinima series
8. Dark Fate

"So much nostalgia" seems like a common thread in all these tweets. It feels like these people were told to push the nostalgic angle to hype the ones that were annoyed with the disrespectful way GB2016 (which, for the record, wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be) dealt with the original.

I'm excited and after what happened in 2016 this movie is desperately needed to revive any kind of love the fans have for the original but saying sh*t like "it's better than the original" is EXACTLY what made reviews for the 2016 version stick out as well. Massive hyperbole that seems bought
