The GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot Has Officially Bombed At The Box Office; Sequel Now Unlikely

Despite a respectable domestic opening and good reviews, the tallies have now been totaled and reports indicate that Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot actually suffered a $70 million loss.

Sony may have thought their Ghostbusters reboot was on track to be a nice earner, but despite initially solid numbers and a decent/good critical reception, it looks like the Paul Feig-directed comedy is going to have to be considered a box office flop.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ghostbusters came in at around $180 million globally on a $144 million budget (before advertising), and will probably wind up
losing about $70 million.

Here's what box-office analyst Jeff Block had to say about it:

"Ghostbusters is on ice until further notice. I just can't fathom the creative talents behind it — Feig, McCarthy, Wiig, etc. — slogging out another one when the reception to the first one was so mediocre."

Though a Sony rep denies that the losses will be so steep, it's difficult to imagine the studio isn't disappointed with the film's overall performance - and even though Ghostbusters is yet to be released in several countries including Japan and Mexico, it'll still need to make close to $300 million to break even.

Despite all the controversy, I personally think the movie was decent and deserved better, but what about you guys?

I guess the Ghostbros can all collectively pat themselves on the back for demonizing a perfectly fine movie, all because they didn't want girls playing with their toys.
