Major spoilers for Scream ahead!

Like the movies that preceded it, Scream 5 (you can check out our review here) concludes with the unmasking of Ghostface and the big reveal of the identity of the killer(s) who've been slicing their way through the denizens of Woodsboro (seriously, why does anyone stay in that town?)

This time, the deranged murderers turn out to be Sam's boyfriend Ritchie (Jack Quaid) and her sister Tara's (Jenna Ortega) supposed bestie Amber (Mikey Madison), but it sounds like other character combinations were considered.

Though mothing was actually filmed, Melissa Barrera (Sam) revealed some of the alternate endings she was given before production began during an interview with THR.

"They gave us different versions of the ending, and they had produced different versions of the ending as a precaution in case someone leaked the ending. They could cover themselves this way. But in my script, I remember the killers were both female. I don’t think it was Tara; I think it was Amber and Mindy [Jasmin Savoy Brown] or Amber and Liv [Sonia Ben Ammar]."

"When I talked to the directors, I was like, “Oh my god, it’s so amazing that it’s all women at the end," she continued. "The killers are women and the survivors are women. It’s so epic!” And they were like, “Yeah, that’s not the real ending.” So I was like, “OK! I’m still going to be excited.” So they didn’t give me the right ending, and I actually didn’t know who the killers were going to end up being until later."

Funnily enough, it doesn't sound like Sam - who is revealed to be the daughter of original Ghostface Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and has some serial killer tendencies herself - was ever considered as a potential Ghostface, which suggests she was always envisioned as the franchise's new primary protagonist.

Have you guys been to see Scream yet? If so, did you guess who the killers were?

I was entertained throughout the film, the meta commentary works because that's what this franchise is about (ahem matrix). The twist was surprising enough but at the same time it felt obvious once it's revealed lol

I really don't understand the praise this movie received.

It's a poor rehash of the first film with the worst "killers" of all five films.

Billy Loomis was a psycho obsessed with Sidney but now all of a sudden he met another girl and has a daughter?

@Ocelot - I can only watch the original,the others aren't all that.

@Ocelot - This isn't even the Billy Loomis part that bothers me. He could've had an one night stand - but I really hated the billy ghost appearing 1000x in the movie.

@marvel72 - The first is by far the best.

@cocaegelo - Yep the bill ghost was aggravating.

@cocaegelo - At first I didnt like the Billy Ghost to but the more I thought about the more it made sense to me. Screams always been about the "Ghosts" of a parents past actions can cause (Sidney's mother) the child of that parent. Also it was a reference to Billy's line in the first film.

@Ocelot - I haven't seen it yet so I don't know all the ins, all the outs, all the what-have-yous, but the killer was spoiled for me last night, so I came here.

The Billy thing isn't that much of a shocker. A year and a half ago, I had the kid wrong but...

Seems they did subvert my expectations though not making her the killer.

@Ocelot -

?? The boy was trying to bust nuts the entire film…you really can’t believe that a sociopathic kid like him wasn’t getting any on the side?

I only take issue with the Loomis Ghost, but it definitely makes sense that he was creampie-ing other girls while trying to get to Sydney.

@Ocelot - yeah but he was only obsessed with Sidney for revenge for her mother breaking up his family

@Ocelot - what? He was obsessed with killing Sydney because of what her mother did. I really don't see how him being in a "legitimate" relationship undermines this, especially since his plan involved him moving on after that.

IMO opinion they should have killed Chad and let Wes live. If they gonna be the characters that will keep the franchise now on, it would be a bit more cool. I really thought killing Wes in the beginning was a little too rushed. This Requel mirrors the first movie in a lot of aspects. In the first movie the character that dies but didn't dies is Dewey (and he was a favorite of mine since the first scene), Chad did not made the same impact. At one point I really thought they would make him a fake ghostface but the killers in this one was on nose since the first scene. Although I really enjoyed the movie and Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega has the mojo to be the new Sidney/Gale. 7.5/10 for me.

Look while I liked Sam as a character I don't want her to become the next Sidney Prescott since while Sam would indeed make for a great leading lady to me it would me more interesting if Scream 6 and Scream 7 saw her decent into madness and have become the new Ghostface in say Scream 7 or Scream 8. Plus by having her be the one that kills of Sidney Prescott would be seen as poetic justice and would make the whole franchise come across as being full circle in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

To be fair speaking as a fan of the franchise or at least the original three. The movie could have been much worse, the killers were obvious though.

I think they can actually do alot of fun things with the character of Sam. The more I think about it the more interesting having the daughter of the first killer be the final girl becomes. They could do something in the sequel like Sam being convinced that the new ghostface is one of Tara's freinds and in the third act she just slits the person's throught psycho style for it to be revealed later that the person was innocent and not Ghostface. Have the film end with Tara being the real final girl and Sam being taken to jail.

With this film going back to the roots of the original, I was hoping for more backstory involving Stu Macher.

I mean I understand that Roman’s influence and directing of Billy’s murder spree were the catalyst for the original film events, but I wanted a little more backstory on Stu.
We only see that one kid who died early in the beginning outside the bar who was said to be his nephew, and that was it.
So we know that Stu had a sister.

And add that with the talks of Stu possibly being alive and especially when Matthew Lillard went on record by saying that there was a early draft of Scream 3 that had Stu masterminding the events of that film because of Scream 1.
That draft was then re-written for the one that writer Ethan Krueger made up and gave us the Scream 3 we know.

With Kevin Williamson back writing the scripts, there could be a chance that Stu is brought back and is marionetting the events of this new series of Scream films.

@SatsuiNoJXA - Yeah, I really felt like they were building up to a big connection to Stu. From the beginning, where the killer got super pissed at Tara naming Billy as the only killer to to seemingly intentionally persistent exclusion of Stu from discussion of the original film's events to the reveal of Amber living in his house... It seemed like Stu or someone connected to him was trying to "set the record straight" because the world forgot his claim to fame.

They could still do that in a future movie, though. Anything to get Matthew Lillard back.

I honestly would have liked that more, because I knew one of the killers would be a straight white man and it would have been nice to see I was wrong.

I felt like Barrera as Sam was the weak link of the cast, so I'm kind of wary of her and Tara becoming the leads going forwards. I'd honestly rather get the twins as new leads. The whole "serial-killer's daughter" angle does have a lot of potential, I'm just not sure Barrera can pull it off. There were some moments that really worked, but a lot of her performance fell flat.

Either way, there's a lot of interesting options to go with moving forward. You could comment on corporate takeover of movies w/a major corp buying out the rights to the Stab franchise. Or introduce a new killer mad about endless sequels/reboots and wanting to "create original content." Or finally take a more direct confrontation of Stab building a franchise off 'real life murders' as a criticism of an emotionally-distant society's voyeuristic treatment of tragedy and trauma.
