It's a sad time for
Supernatural fans, last night we saw the 2-hour season finale which left us with some big shocks, and one heck of a cliffhanger as per the usual. The finale certainly didn't disappoint, it wrapped up the existing storylines quite nicely IMO while at the same time giving us an entirely new plot to go on for next season.
*Spoilers for the season finale ahead. So if you haven't seen the episode and don't want to be spoiled, stop reading now*
The first part of the finale mainly focused on Dean's relationship with Ben and Lisa. The boys find out tht Castiel is investigating none other than the famous horror/sci-fi writer H.P Lovecraft. It turns out that before his death, Lovecraft was attempting to open a portal to another dimension (purgatory). Supposedly the spell didn't work, however something did get through to portal, and Lovecraft and all in attendance were killed off one by one. Castiel is on the search of whatever creature came through so he can learn himself how to open the doorway.
In the meantime, Crowley kidnaps Ben & Lisa and holds on to them for leverage against the Winchesters stating that so long as the boys stay away, Lisa and Ben stay alive. A lot of fans don't like the Lisa & Ben storyline but I think it's awesome. They haven't over used it too much, and it shows us another side of Dean that we rarely see. It's obvious that Lisa is Dean's one true love, and you just know that he considers Ben his own son, so naturally when Lisa andBen are kidnapped, Dean takes care of things in proper Dean Winchester fashion.
With no other option, because Dean refuses to call Castiel for help, the boys enlist the help of Balthazar to find Ben and Lisa. Bobby is off trying to find me information on H.P Lovecraft but it would seem as though he's always one step behind Castiel, until Bobby see's a picture of one of the missing women from Lovecraft's party, who he immediately recognizes as Dr. Visyak, the old friend of Bobbies who helped the boys earlier with dragons.
Balthazar reluctantly agrees to help Sam & Dean and gives them the location of Ben & Lisa, so the brothers are off to save the day as usual. Once they arrive, almost immediately they are seperated from each other and Sam is knocked unconcious and locked in a room while Dean finds where Ben and Lisa are being held, fights and kills his way in and sets them free only to discover that Lisa is in fact posessed, and just as a final screw you to Dean, the demon grabs a knife and stabs Lisa/itself in the stomach. Dean exorcises the demon and rescues Sam and they rush off to the hospital to save Lisa.
While in the hospital, Dean asks Castiel to whipe their minds of any and all memories of Dean. It's a really touching and emotional way to end their story, definitely one of the most emotional scenes we've had on Supernatural in a long time.
I think this first part of the season finale was in fact a little slow at times, but it was an amazing way to wrap up the Lisa and Ben part of Dean's life. That last 3 minutes was one of the most emotional scenes we've had on Supernatural in a long time. The episode definitely left a lot of us hanging and if it wasn't for the other part airing directly afterwards, a lot of us fans would've went crazy.
It seemed like the entire cast had their acting abilities turned up to 10 for this one. Misha Collins as a conflicted and hurt Castiel is amazing, it wasn't hard to believe that yes Cas is doing some horrible things, but he just wants Dean to be by his side, he wants Dean to trust him, and he's deeply hurt. Overall I have to say Jensen Ackles gave the performance of the episode, again just with those last few minutes, Dean's final goodbye to Dean, and then threatening to break Sam's nose, Jensen nailed it.
The second part of the finale started off in traditional Supernatural fashion, with "The Road So Far" with of course Kansas laid over top of the clips.
So we all knew this point was coming sooner or later, the wall in Sam's mind comes crashing down, thanks to Castiel, who tells the boys as long as they stay out of his way, he'll repair Sam once he's done. So Sam is trapped basically inside of his own mind, battling himself. His mind is split into 3 different parts, the normal Sam, Sam without a soul, and of course the part of Sam that remembers hell. Which leads to one of the best performances Jared Padalecki has given on the show, playing the part of Sam that remembers hell, he pleads with himself, begs with himself to not remember. He tells Sam that he cant handle the knowledge, that it will destroy him, he begs with him to just leave things how they are. But of course Sam needs to absorb all parts of his soul in order to wake up and return to help Bobby and Dean stop Castiel.
Castiel and Crowley have gotten their hands on Dr. Visyak and have discovered how to open the door to purgatory which incase you haven't been following, is a bad thing. Castiel prepares to take in all of those souls and become powerful enough to destroy Raphael and stop the war in heaven, but it might come with a price, Cas is basically going to be a giant nuke waiting to go off and maybe take out a huge chunk of the planet with him.
Of course Castiel finds out that Balthazar has been acting as a double agent by helping the Winchesters, and telling Dean and Bobby where to find Castiel and Crowley, so of course, Castiel in all of his conflicted glory, kills Balthazar. Again Misha Collins is absolutely amazing in this episode, he's always amazing but he really stepped it up a notch for these last 2 episodes. Castiel tells Crowley that he is changing their deal, and that Crowley isn't going to get a single soul from purgatory. Crowley obviously isn't too happy about this whole situation so he decides to enlist the help of a new business partner, Raphael, they make him hand over the blood needed for the spell and send him on his merry little way.
So with that, Crowley and Raphael begin the spell, Dean and Bobby arrive, which results in the Impala being smashed again, but c'mon, it's Raphael and Crowley, obviously they don't get the jump on them. Crowley finishes the spell but to no avail, nothing happens. Castiel arrives back in the room and we find out that Cas switched the bottles of blood and went off and performed the spell himself. So there's Cas in all his glory and power, he snaps his fingers and Raphael is blown to bits, Crowley disappears, and Castiel informs Dean and Bobby that he is the new God, while giving this whole speach, Sam sneaks up behind Cas, and stabs him through the back with the arch-angel dagger, big mistake, our dear friend Cas is a little too powerful for that now. He gives the brothers and Bobby the option to either kneel down and praise him as their lord, or die.
That's all she wrote until fall, one heck of a cliffhanger. It may not have been the most action packed finale we've had over the course of the series, but it by no means was a disappointment. I think the whole Castiel being as powerful as a God storyline is going to be one of the running stories for Season 7. As for Crowley, we know how he feels about the Winchesters, and he's still out there so we can expect to see more of his devious ways next season for sure.
The writing was outstanding, some of the best writing this season, but what do you expect with series creator Eric Kripke back in the writing room, the man loves the show like his own children, and it shows on screen. I have no complaints acting wise either, as I said earlier, everyone really stepped it up for this one. If I had to complain about anything for this finale it would be the destruction of the Impala, and maybe a little more action would've been nice but overall it was a pleasing finale.
