The True Story Of Annabelle, The Haunted Doll From THE CONJURING
The Conjuring conjured up (corny) a $41.5 million opening weekend, which set the record for the biggest opening for an original R-rated horror film. The previous record holder was The Purge, with $34 million.

The film is based on "true" stories from Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators, who were played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. For me, it holds a personal connection as I grew up in the same town that the Warrens made their home. Over the years, I came into contact with them many times, although most of those moments came while I was working at the local liquor store.

I figured I would share a couple interesting tales. One is based on the Annabelle doll. A couple of decades ago, the Warrens used to open up their home around Halloween time and people could go into their museum (basement) to view their collection of possessed items. One such item, is the infamous Annabelle doll. You can see the original story of it in the video below, but one of the stories most people don't hear, and it may just be a myth, but growing up in the town we heard it often. It involved a couple, out on a date, and the boy proving that he wasn't afraid of the doll, which was in a glass case. He knocked on the glass, even though his girlfriend urged him not to repeatedly. When they headed home on the boy's motorcycle, it crashed! The boy was dead immediately, but the girl had not even a scratch on her. I never looked into it to see if it was true, but it is a story everyone from the area knows by heart.

Another story that I'd like to share, is that after graduating high school I came back home for a party. There I ran into a friend of mine who told me he was working as an apprentice for his father's plumbing company. He shared with me a creepy tale in which the Warrens frantically called his father early in the morning, I believe 2am, and asked that he hurry over. His father woke him and they hustled to their residence. Once there, the Warrens explained that they have holy water that constantly runs over the possessed artifacts in glass cases. Those are the most dangerous one's. They would further explain that the water stopped flowing at some point and needed to be fixed at once. My friend and his father worked quite quickly and resolved the issue, but what creeped out my friend was that the Warrens looked over them as they worked, as though they were protecting them from something evil.

All of that could be nonsense, but I figured I would share it with you, as I find it rather interesting.

Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. Based on a true story, “The Conjuring” tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

THE CONJURING directed by James Wan, from a screenplay written by Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes. The cast includes: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Haley McFarland, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver, and Sterling Jerins.

The final design is the be...holy crap, that wedding gown is [frick]ing creepy. As for Bathsheba, the final look is still the best, though.

Movie is solid. Not as scary as I expected, though still quite haunting, and everything involving the wardrobe is an effective way to invoke jump scares.

There is a haunted island of dolls somewhere in Mexico. Those are even creepier. They came out on an episode of Destination Truth.

@ hope

It's definitely a good r-rated old school flick. Me and my roommate loved it and he's usually really picky about his horror movies. I say watch it if you want a good story, great characters

This movie was definitely one o the best horror movies to come out in the last few years, highly recommend! The based on a true story aspect made it even creepier!

hope420: Don't expect too much from the R rating, though they still managed to consistently maintain a pretty damn intense atmosphere throughout the whole movie.

One of my fav horror films of all time, although I'm not a big horror guy. Still, great movie.

Really digging all the doll designs. The final is the best but the third is really good. The first two ghost/monster/whatever designs look too much like The Ring girl, the third and fourth just look too man-ish.

My friend tried to get me to see this movie with him but I'm not a horror fan and I told him flat out I have no intention of sitting in a theater for 2 hours while he covers his eyes and squeezes the circulation out of my arm. A girlfriend of mine got me to see The Woman in Black with her and did exactly that. It's funny but also annoying as [frick] when someone drags you to a horror movie to basically be a pincushion.

Anyway, been hearing good things about this so it'll be at family movie night when it comes out on DVD.

This movie was alright. I was a little disappointed though. Felt like a PG13 movie. Very little blood.

The creepy doll was a tired cliché long before Child's Play, but at least that movie did something original for it's time by giving it personality and satirizing the Cabbage Patch Dolls and slasher horror craze. Hell, every other episode of The Twilight Zone was a creepy doll episode, it's been done to death.

Awesome [frick]ing movie. The characters really made a good film. Good performances.

"It's looking right at us" Sends chills!

It's a shame. Patrick Wilson was born to play Captain America.

This was an alright movie. Wouldn't see it more than once and if you're a guy you should totally watch it with a girl. The creepy scenes were better than the jump scare scenes. I wish they made more creepy scary movies nowadays rather than jump scares or gore. 1408 is a good example of what I mean.

@Neo I must say that part you just mentioned

"its looking right at us"

sent some chills down my spine. Only part that really got to me. Probably because we couldnt see shit. Other than that though it did seem like the same old formula.

You people are nuts. THe only way this movie can be even a tad scary is if your like 17-23yrs old. I'm 31yrs old and there is nothing original about this film. The older you get, the more its just the same old ideas for horror movies. This movie would of been great if i was 17 or so, but being i'm in my 30's, it utterly was a bore fest!

THe opening of the movie was solid though with the idiotic 2girls who thought it'd be fine to let a ghost take over a dolls body..lol

The reason why it's one of the horror flicks that I like, is that it's got good characters; the Perrons are a family we can care about, and I didn't feel like I want to see one of them get hurt, while the Warrens are true heroes - I feel as safe as the Perrons do, when they're around. Patrick Wilson was awesome, too, especially when he (Spoiler) completes the exorcism, so was Vera Farmiga, though I don't think it's her finest performance. Overall, not exactly scary - though I will no longer look at wardrobes the same way again - but it's a solid horror flick. Also, it should be nominated for best sound design.

One of the best horror movies lately. Yes, it's nothing we haven't seen before, but the execution throughout the movie was well done. This is practically a modern day throwback to old school classics. James Wan is really talented and I have mad respect for him because he doesn't rely on jump scares too much. There are a few jump scares in The Conjuring, but they're done really well. I really hate the cliche and annoying jump scare that is followed by a loud and obnoxious orchestra sting (either a piano or violin), which occurs often in a lot of weaker horror movies lately such as Sinister.

For anyone wondering. The majority of the movie is real such as the cases the Warrens worked on including the main case, the doll, and them investigating a haunting, which turned out false due to old rusted pipes and such. Obviously some of the scares are not, but hey, we weren't there to know for sure for the rest. I'm not saying I believe everything either.

This was one very Good movie !
The acting is great, the actors, specially the kids actors were perfect, the fact that the movie is based in 'true events' in fact, makes it creepier, in general a good horror movie.
I did enjoy it a lot for different reasons:
- the acting
- the story
- there is No blood
- No graphic scenes
- the atmosphere and set up plays great
- it made me jump a couple times

overall it IS a good horror movie !
