Adam Wingard's strange, pulpy sci-fi thriller/comedy The Guest released in 2014, and went on to become something of a modern classic in many people's eyes. Now, we finally have an update on that much-discussed sequel.
The first film certainly leaves room for the story to continue, and while Wingard has hinted that he has a few ideas floating around in the past, we've never really had solid confirmation that a follow-up was in the works... until now.
While speaking with ComicBook.com, writer Simon Barrett revealed that a sequel to The Guest is "concretely happening," but it doesn't sound like it's going to be what any of us expected.
"We are doing something related to The Guest. And it is concretely happening, but it is not a feature film or a comic book, because I think that’s what people would expect us to do. And I think that’s the thing that no one actually wants us to do, because I think if we actually made a feature film version of The Guest 2, or realistically, the graphic novel version would just be a cheaper version of trying to achieve kind of the same thing narratively."
Okay... so what is it? Well, Barrett rules out a movie and a comic book, so we assume it's going to be a TV series or one-off short. Whatever he and Wingard are cooking up, it will be set after the events of the first movie and bring us up to speed with the surviving characters.
“There’s definitely going to be one thing that tells you what the further adventures of Dan Stevens’ character and Maika Monroe’s character and Brendan Meyer’s character," Barrett adds. "What those could have been. And then, we’ll see if it leads into anything more concrete."
What do you guys make of this? Are you excited about a sequel to The Guest - even if we're not exactly sure what form it's going to take?
