Karl Urban Thinks A DREDD Sequel Could Still Happen; Says It's "Not Off the Agenda"

DREDD was arguably up there with The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises as one of the best comic book movies of 2012, and in the following interview, the actor who played the iconic 2000AD character hints that with enough fan support, a sequel COULD still happen.

Being a hit with fans and critics alike just wasn't enough to make DREDD the box office smash it needed to be in order to secure a follow-up. In an interview with Collider, Star Trek Into Darkness star Karl Urban was asked to comment on the passionate fanbase and whether or not he would return for a sequel. "Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with Alex Garland this morning. It’s not off the agenda. Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it. It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen. The power of fandom can resurrect projects. In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek. They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series." DVD and Blu-ray sales for the movie were good, but not necessarily good enough to convince the studio that it would be worth their while to make another instalment of DREDD. However, stranger things have happened (look at the recent announcement that 24 is returning), so stay tuned!

Hell Yes!
The movie was badass.
There needs to be a sequel.
There needs to be MORE HARD R ACTION MOVIES!
Films for all ages are fine but they don't allow for many characters to be fully realized.
Dredd has to be Hard R & it works if people wouldn't be candyasses & don't go to theater to support it.
Wolverine should be Hard R rated to allow Logan to be The Best There Is..but nooo we get the watered down version.

Fan power needs to make it happen so what do we do? Kickstarter campaign, buy the dvd/blu-ray a tonne more times? Dredd didnt run long enough to get a buzz going in Ireland but everyone I've forced to watch it has loved it.

@levi
aside from the fact all those films topped or came close to a billion dollars and Dredd made nothing?

@LEVI Actually it really doesn't. Movies get sequels on how much money they make a d not how good they are. TASM, iron man 2 and transformers all made a shit ton of money, dredd didn't.

The main reason the first one flopped was because outside the US/UK Dredd just isn't that well-known. But I want him to succeed and so I always encourage imaginative sequels so as long as Karl urban is passionate enough to make a sequel he has my full support.

Well, if this time they spend something less on the 3D and something more on marketing maybe they might be able make a profit out of a sequel.

I loved Dredd, simple little story.
Tired of every comicbook movie striving for epic.

I Blame Liongate's poor poor POOR marketing, much like their failed attempt to revive Conan the barbarian.

Both movies I found good but their marketing was ass.

FACT: In the top 100 comic book adaptations Stallone's Dredd stands at #75 in the list while Dredd 3D stands at #96, that's how bad it did at the box office in America let alone the rest of the world where most territories had no interest in distributing it.

1: Karl Urban is dreaming, Star Trek had a huge worldwide following and the TV show was still finding it foot until that third season when they finally nailed the writing. Likewise 24 had been going for EIGHT seasons and shown worldwide. Naturally it can easily come back for a mini series since the demand has always been there for a movie that has now been scrapped for a mini series instead. Dredd didn't bring in nearly a quarter of what these two shows did in consistent home video sales, merchandise sales and dedicated world following.

2: It flopped mainly because it was overly violent for the mainstream exposing its niche market of minority fans of that kind of gore. No movie with that much gore and violence makes big box office in this day and age.

3: It was also about a character that basically not enough people care enough about to really make the movie a must see. Despite over 30 years in comics Judge Dredd has struggled to break into the American market that's dominated by musclebound Spandex superheroes. John Constantine,

You can count the amount of comic based characters that has made it big in the cinema without being a Superhero archetype all on one finger.

Mechagino just hit the nail on the head.
Although Dredd was stellar and Conan was meh so so right on this users part.
so many mediocre movies make tons of cash with good marketing.
just look at TDKR, all the mouth breathing/prepubescent casual batman fans ate that walking fiascio of feces put on Celluloid put to film wasa decent film, or even a decent batman film.
if you want to have some perv spew shit on you to eat up go to gusto, not chris nolan. he won't charge as much.

It isn't an S. It's a symbol of hope.

We all know what happened. We were there.

Not every film has to make a billion to be successful. It's balancing budget with returns. Audience awareness can grow after the fact. The film was well reviewed and it most certainly has been seen by more people on DVD and Blu Ray than saw it in the cinema, which might increase the potential returns next time... First film as self-promotion sort of thing.

Get away with your cold hard economics. This is the movies.
