Henry Cavill Talks "Extensive" JUSTICE LEAGUE Reshoots, "Ridiculous" Marketing And Negative Response

Henry Cavill talks here about those Justice League reshoots, why he couldn't shave his moustache, hiding the Man of Steel from the movie's marketing campaign, and the negative response from critics...

You don't need us to tell you that Justice League was a disaster. Regardless of whether you loved or loathed the movie (or were somewhere in between), it was a critical and commercial disaster and means Warner Bros. has gone back to the drawing board with the franchise which might as well be as dead as Green Lantern was when it was released in 2011 to similar groans of disappointment.

Now, Henry Cavill has finally weighed in on where things went wrong with Justice League and he started by addressing the bizarre situation with that damn moustache which caused so much hassle.

"I was slightly surprised. When we decided to go for the moustache, I certainly wasn't expecting all the events to unfold as they were going to unfold. I wasn't expecting Justice League reshoots to be as extensive as they were. When it came to that, it was one of those things where I'm in the middle of another movie, and to change my look for a movie that should have finished already becomes a real problem. And as you will see when the movie comes out, to have a fake moustache on would not have been a possibility. You'll think, 'Okay, yeah, a fake moustache would perhaps have been blown off in this situation.' Unfortunately, it led to much dismay when Justice League came out, but that's the nature of these things. You can't win every time."

When the interviewer put it to Cavill that everyone knew Superman was going to be in the movie despite him being absent from all marketing materials, the British actor acknowledged how silly that is but pointed out that there's not necessarily anything wrong keeping secrets from regular moviegoers.

"Yeah. Right there, with no moustache, at the very beginning of the movie [Laughs]. Well, that whole concept was faintly ridiculous and I honestly believe everyone viewed it as such. Of course, if I'm on the press tour I'm in the movie. Obviously, you knew, and that was a different little tap dance we danced together. But for the audience, I wanted to leave some mystery. I think it's important to have some mystery in movies these days."

Talk inevitably turned to the poor critical response Justice League received and Cavill chose his words carefully. "I think all these things have their place and their time," he says. "There are many reasons why the audience have responded in the way they responded. It's all lessons learned." I'm sure many of you will have some thoughts on those reasons so be sure to share them in the usual place.

@Jaspion - Reading between the lines, it's easy to see why he stopped making videos for a bit. They were about the rivalry between the companies, but not much of a rivalry at the moment.

@Jaspion - this video actually changed my perspective over DC..."were fighting an uphill battle"...i hope DC, now that Zack Snyder is gone, can regroup and make good fun movies...

@Jaspion - It was about 2 months after Suicide Squad, when WB was making it clear they were panicking behind the scenes, that the movie rivalry definitely stopped being fun for me.

"Fun" isn't even the right word for it, most of the time. To me, it was various ways of screaming "you're going the wrong way!" while WB slammed its foot harder and harder on the gas. But once they handbrake turned into a culvert, I didn't need to keep shouting about it.

...It doesn't help that they're still in that culvert, sending up a spray of mud, but at least they aren't an active danger to anyone anymore.

But I love the good-natured rivalry, when it's fun. Hope we get to a place where we can have it again.

@Mrsmile - The worst thing Zack Snyder did was not make his message of hope rising in a world that seems devoid of it, much clearer in his films. He was never the problem. It was the studio's overcorrection with Suicide Squad and Justice League that were the problem. The only way we get more good DC Films like Man of Steel Batman v Superman and Wonder Woman is if the studio stops worrying about what others think and becomes director driven again.

Avengers 4 is going to have the same problem. Most people know the deaths aren't permanent, but they're going to have to decide whether to include Spider-Man, Strange, the Guardians, etc. in the marketing.

@Nebula - no it ain't. It happened from the top. The actors learned, the director learned but what do we have to show the execs did

@PBIRD - Snyder learns with every film he does. I honestly don't see him being so ambitious with DC Films if he did them after Dawn of the Dead. Nor do I imagine he would do a Superman movie after Dawn of the Dead.

Reading interviews with him during promotion for Watchmen and during promotion for his DC Films, there's a far greater sense of maturity that he displays for his insight into the heroes of his DC Films. He talks about how he believes that they should be challenged, and how those challenges make them stronger.

To this day, I believe his film adaptation of Justice League would have turned a lot of people around on him. He said Justice League was going to be his most light-hearted and optimistic DC Film, and after everything leading up to it, I believe him at his word. Of course, like you said, he isn't the one that needs to learn. It's the studio.

SisterSunday52 - 5/15/2018, 12:27 AM
@Spock0Clock - Yes he did. Batman v Superman was leading toward an optimistic direction for Justice League and future DC Films, and instead of questioning that, fan reception strengthened his resolve to continue in that direction. Sadly, the studio didn't think it was optimistic enough. They wanted a Marvel tone, without the work put in to earning it, and we saw the tragic results in Trailer Park's Suicide Squad and Frankenstein's monster Justice League. The director learned. The studio didn't. I hope they have, now, but that Flashpoint announcement makes me think otherwise. Until I know for sure that they are cancelling Flashpoint and giving their assurance that they will leave their creative teams ALONE, I worry for DC Films' future.
