Zack Snyder Under Fire For Quoting Mussolini While Promoting JUSTICE LEAGUE Digital Release Zack Snyder Under Fire For Quoting Mussolini While Promoting JUSTICE LEAGUE Digital Release

It's been a rough week for Zack Snyder, but the divisive filmmaker is doing himself no favors by quoting Benito Mussolini in an effort to promote the digital release of his cut of Justice League.

Earlier this week, Rolling Stone shared a damning piece on the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut Movement and the role director Zack Snyder may have played in organizing and/or encouraging his supporters to engage in toxic online behaviour.

The filmmaker disputed the findings, but his response its publication has not exactly endeared him to his detractors.

Snyder took to Vero to promote the digital release of his director's cut of Justice League shortly after the report went live, and included part of the following quote from Benito Mussolini: "If I advance; follow me. If I retreat; kill me. If I die; avenge me! It is better to live one day as a lion than one-hundred years as a sheep!"

Snyder's post has inevitably come under fire on social media, and while it's entirely possible that he wasn't fully aware of the source of the quote he used, many seem to feel this was a deliberate attempt to stir up more controversy and rally his followers.

Either way, when you've been accused of encouraging your fervent/militant supporters to launch a hate campaign, quoting a notorious fascist dictator probably isn't the best idea.

Cyborg actor Ray Fisher was also dragged into Rolling Stone's report, and responded by claiming it was nothing more than a "contrived hit piece." Fisher has now followed-up by denying that his team was contacted with sufficient time to issue a response.

What do you guys make of this? Are people overreacting to Snyder's social media post? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments section.

@UncleHarm1 - yes, Snyder is such a misogynist. That's why he included a strong female character in the form of wonder woman to be included in a film titled batman v superman.

@RevanIsMyMan - why? The meaning of the quote has nothing to do with the overall views of mussolini. It's basically saying "keep going and don't give up".

Heh, that's nothing really...
People here in Italy quote that all the time all the while hating that f*cker.

Shit, look what Hitler did with the Hindu swastika.

Doesn't mean jackshit.

@Doomsday8888 - True. Hitler took a symbol that had a different meaning historically and turned it into something "racist".

The point is, if you walked down the street wearing a shirt with a swastika today, you would at least get some dirty looks, if not attacked, or even arrested in certain countries like Germany itself.

@Doomsday8888 - Unfortunately in America they haven't figured out how to accept their history in its entirety, grow, and move on.

@The1st - I think the issue in the U.S. is that the history that's taught today is revisionist history and based on the current political climate, which imo, is a false view of reality.

What country are you from that, in your opinion, has accepted its' history and has grown from it; not judging, just wondering?

@Feralwookiee - revisionist history? Of what?
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 7/20/2022, 11:01 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - A lot of what we call "history" is revisionist, and that's not exclusive to one country or region. Modern history is often taught through the filter of current "morality" and as always is subject to the biases of those who are teaching it.

What was moral or socially acceptable just 50 years ago has changed a ton in many societies.

An easy and recent example of revisionist history would that the Chinese government insists the Tiananmen Square massacre never happened and forbids discussion of it.

Another example involving the U.S. specifically would be Truman dropping the atomic bombs on Japan in WW2. For decades most historians stated Truman felt he HAD to do this to ensure the end of the war, while many modern historians claim Truman knew it wasn't necessary, but used it as a tactic to intimidate the USSR. Again, these things just become a matter of debate or p.o.v. but the previously majority opinion has been usurped to some extent.

Facts are facts regardless. Tiananmen Square happened. The U.S.A. killing civilians with nuclear weapons happened. But, the perspective and sometimes the supposed "intent" is changed over time and is often misleading or even factually incorrect.

@Feralwookiee - your example of the Tiananmen massacre does not support your definition of revisionist history. The massacre occurred, that is factually correct. The reasons for the massacre, however, are susceptible to revision.

@Feralwookiee - did you just edit your comment? I must have been replying to a previous version.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 7/20/2022, 11:18 AM
@Dotanuki - Of course. That's what I was referring to. Again, most revisionism comes from perspective and passage of time.

Originally, the Chinese government claimed that the People’s Liberation Army intervened after seven weeks of demonstrations and that people were killed. But the official line is that, rather than crushing a peaceful protest, the military simply defended itself.
Since then, the CCP officially dismisses the topic and discourages any discussion of it.
