BOX OFFICE: Universal "Disappointed" With KICK-ASS 2's $13.6 Million Opening

Thanks to the overwhelmingly positive reviews for The Butler, Kick-Ass 2 failed to come even close to giving Lee Daniels' movie any serious competition. However, more surprising than the fact analysts were way off with their predictions that the Jeff Wadlow helmed superhero sequel would earn at least as much as its predecessor is just how poorly it has performed in North America so far. With an opening weekend of $13.5 million, Kick-Ass 2 finished behind We're the Millers and currently looks set to have tied for third place with Elysium. We'll know tomorrow which movie actually came out on top. With a budget of only $28 million, the big screen adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s comic book still has time to turn things around. It's kicked off its international run with $6.3 million and will open in more territories next weekend. However, Universal are clearly shocked at its domestic performance. "We were disappointed we didn't match the opening of the first movie," said Nikki Rocco, Universal president of distribution. "The good thing is that it represented very minimal risk for the studio, and the first film did very well in ancillary markets, so we'll see where this goes domestically and internationally."





Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

im hearing good things about this movie
i heard it was good..not as good as the first.
the script was pretty decent of course
and i heard jim carrey stole the show
but it was more about hit-girl instead of kick-ass
but i heard it was pretty good not bad decent movie!!!
give me feed back!!

also the only reason why this movie probably aint do good was lack of promotion..i didnt really see a lot of TV-spots for this movie! maybe 7 total all the same within the last 2 weeks

also the butler with oprah is out so people will most likely see that over this...

Just got back from seeing it I really liked the first one and this although not better than the first is still a solid sequel. It was a fun film.

More CBM's need to adopt the reasonable budget approach. They wouldn't be looked at as disappointments if they weren't spending 250 mill per film. I think this one will do just fine, especially since its budget was low.

I really didn't care all that much for the first one. It was okay, didn't warrant a sequel imho.

That sort of comedic (yet ultra violent) take on superheroes doesn't appeal to me at all. I still haven't seen Wolverine, Elysium, or The Butler so I'll be seeing those this week (my movie theater rewards card will be happy).

haven't seen it yet, but with only a 28 million budget it'll turn a small profit for the studio. it's by no means a flop but i'm sure they were expecting a bigger profit

In the next two years, we will have an Avengers sequel, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Thor sequels, and a Superman/Batman crossover.

CMBs are anything but a dying trend.

It's a fun movie, but there's something a bit muted about the way it's filmed and the sound. The cinematography is lacklustre, and the sound isn't heavily compressed enough to match up with the general level of movies these days. (In the picture house I saw it at, it was overall quieter than some of the adverts before it.)

"Kick-Ass" is stupid, conceptually. The truth is that it's a story that sets out to debunk the idea of real-life superheroes but validates the idea for financial gain. It's a dumb story.

CBMs are dying. MOS soared the first weekend, but crashed thereafter. The Wolverine had one of the worst X-Men weekend debuts. KA2 debuted less than the 1st one. While IM3 made over a billion, it has yet to match the #3 movie last year, Hunger Games, in the domestic box office. And we all know Thor 2 is going to get obliterated by Hunger Games 2 in November.

I really loved it. It wasn't better than the first one, but it wasn't really worse than it either. You laugh hard most of the time, then bam, you get hit with the reality checks. It's more of a tale of kickass trying to become a real hero while hit-girl is trying to become a regular school girl. It's not more Mindy or more Kickass, it really felt like a solid continuation of the first one.

The first movie was far from a huge box office hit, it was too violent to attract the interests of the mainstream cinema-goer so I fail to see why they thought this would be any different?

Kick Ass opening weekend = $19,828,687
Kick Ass 2 opening weekend = $13,568,000

The first movie went on to make $48 million domestic and a mere $96 million in total worldwide. Fine for a small budget flick but hardly an indicator on how popular comic movies are. More an indicator on how unattractive the average person is to over the top violence in movies, just look at Judge Dredd.

I want this film to do well. I really do.

But it's the same as Red 2. The first one made a profit, sure, but it didn't make as much as they hoped so they can't believe a sequel would do a lot better.

Lol. It's so funny reading people talk about the death of the comic book genre in film. So far this year Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, and The Wolverine are all top 20 films of the year in terms of gross. Yeah, sounds like the genre's dead. Considering worldwide grosses vs. production budgets, I'd say A-list characters aren't gonna die off any time soon.

Just saw it. It was decent I like the first one better though. Way too much "I'm a hero" "no wait i don't wanna be a hero anymore". The whole hanging up the suit story line is so boring in movies i think

People will pay to see good movies. That's always been the case. A violent movie with minimal star power and a very specific target audience. You can go with your kids to see Iron Man hence a wider audience. Who is Kick Ass for ? What demographic ? If Universal thought it was going to do big money then they should pimp slap Millar and Wadlow for convincing them of that ridiculous notion.
