Matthew Vaughn May Direct KINGSMAN 2; Explains Why He Tends To Avoid Sequels

Matthew Vaughn has directed several great comic book movies, but has never gone on to helm their sequels. The Kingsman: The Secret Service director has now revealed that he'd be interested in returning for a second film, and also explained why he avoided them in the past...

Matthew Vaughn has directed some of the most highly praised comic book movies of the last decade, including X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass and this year's truly excellent Kingsman: The Secret Service. However, a running theme that has followed the British director is his tendency to avoid making sequels. While this didn't stop X-Men: Days Of Future Past from being great, Jeff Wadlow's Kick-Ass 2 had a much harder time living up to its beloved predecessor.

For this reason, many fans of Kingsman have expressed their desire for Vaughn to return for the sequel. While he's currently writing a first treatment for the film, this would be an unprecedented move for the director. However, in an exiciting turn of events, Vaughn revealed to Yahoo! Movies that he would love to work with the characters again, and that he could end up breaking his own rule and helm Kingsman 2 - so long as it avoided the tropes he disliked most about sequels.

“Well, the good news is that I’m writing [Kingsman 2] next door at the moment. If I think I can get the script good enough, then we are making it. So again, stay tuned but we are doing our damndest to make that happen.”

"I have to feel inspired and that I'm doing something different, and pushing my boundaries. In sequels normally you're doing just more of the same. I'm trying to re-invent how to do a sequel at the moment - it's tough. I'm in love with these characters and I want to work with them again, so I'll probably be breaking the rule of tending not to make sequels. The bottom line is I have to feel excited and to think I'm making something new when I make a film."

Would you like to see Vaughn return for Kingsman 2, or would you rather see him focus his attention on a new project? Perhaps one of his frequent collaborator Mark Millar's other original comics? You can check out the full interview with Yahoo! above, and be sure to leave your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below!

Nice, I heard him talk about this, and saying that the sequel would be the American Spy version, which would be awesome

Kingsman rocked, would love to see a sequel. Vaughn rocks!!

No Sofia no sequel!

Nah kidding, it's going to be sad without her but the good thing with the Spy genre is that a sequel can just be a fresh mission. No need to necessarily rehash the original since the first one consisted mostly of an origin and training plot.

I'd like to see him do the Shazam film. I think he could do some great stuff with Black Adam and Captain Marvel.

Haha, I'm seriously gonna miss Sofia. She is the main reason that I'm excited for Star Trek 3, can't wait for that

Because Kingsman was so successful, Vaughn is in a position where he doesn't HAVE to do sequel until if he REALLY wants to.
If it wasn't, then we he would be heading for any one of the big movie franchises.

"Reinventing the idea of a sequel"

THAT is something Vaughn could revolutionize. He brings up the exact points that I've been hoping to hear. It doesn't have to be 'more of the same' and I'd be on board to see what approach he takes. I dig this guys process, we're lucky to have him as a working director.

Kingsmen - 6.5/10

Kick-Ass / FC - 8/10

Move on to another project, Vaughn. Kingsmen is your baby, but least enjoyable of your 3 CBM's.

I wish he had directed Kick-Ass 2. So yeah, I'd definitely like to see him come back to make the sequel to Kingsman, instead of (possibly) letting some hack do it.

Kingsman is easily the worst comic movie since 2013, which was an off year to say the least. Yes, it's even worse than Sin City 2. At least that movie isn't asking to be pat on the back every three seconds for how self aware it is while falling into the same genre trope pitfalls it's mocking. Kinda like another movie of Mr. Vaughn's...

SLJ's lisp in Kingsmen was some goofy sheeit, but loved the movie. Hope the sequel can keep up.
BTW, Vaughn needs to direct a scene for Wolverine Berserker attack in an xmen movie. It would be better than anything SingerFinger has and will ever do.

Dammit Vaughn, Why couldn't you break your rule on the X-men franchise? I really wanted to see what he'd do with DOFP.

I weep at how much better Days of Future Past could've been with Vaughn back behind the wheel.

But DAYUM, a sequel to Kingsman? Could be even better than the 1st.

@SauronsBANE

wtf u talking about?

bryan singer > matthew vaughn

i like vaughn's films but did you even see how he directed first class? cheesy tv-level work. i shudder to think the ways in which he would've reduced the greatness of days of future past. singer's a better director. vaughn's a better writer than director.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 6/11/2015, 4:51 PM
@evilness Nah. Bryan Singer is stuck in his 90s aesthetic and refuses to actually modernize anything. And based on his past movies, he's simply not that great at creating interesting characters. Vaughn is an incredibly smart writer, his characters jump out of the screen, and his films actually flow. If anything's cheesy, it's the vast majority of Singer's movies. ESPECIALLY his X-Men movies.
