"We're talking to some people over here, but I think we're gonna have to do ['American Jesus'] the way we did 'Kick-Ass' and make it outside the [Hollywood] system," Millar told IGN . "Because I think the studios will be too nervous to do 'American Jesus.' Everybody has said that they want to do it, but nobody is stepping up."

"People were sniffing around 'American Jesus' and everybody wanted to do it, but they were really nervous about the subject matter, and genuinely, somebody [said] to me 'Is there anyway we can do 'American Jesus', but maybe take Jesus out of it?'"

"I loved that, It had to be the most brilliantly Hollywood thing I've ever heard [because] Jesus is in every scene in that book and its about the second coming. And they were saying 'can we make it some kind of analogy of Jesus? Or maybe call him David?' I was like 'No, it's got to be 'American Jesus.'' They said ' I just don't know if anybody would go and see a movie with Jesus in it.' And I [said] 'Well, 'The Passion' made $650 million!'"

"I see it as a sequel to 'The Passion', added Millar. "'The Passion' is kind of the origin and this is the next part. I feel there's certainly a market for that kind of thing and if you treat it with respect... then I think the audience will come."

Originally titled Chosen, the comic was published by by Dark Horse in 2004, Millar and artist Peter Gross' American Jesus follows a 12-year-old boy who discovers that he might be the second coming of Jesus Christ. With Kick Ass making huge waves and being hailed as a mini masterpiece by many critics, I would think both Millar and Mathew Vaughan could have the pick of the projects over the next while so I can see this happening. The controversial religious themes woulds also pave the way for Preacher..MAKE PREACHER!!

I haven't read American Jesus myself but it sounds like its worth a go. Anyone here like/loathe it?

I finally got the Kick-Ass graphic novel today - one of the best I've ever read! 8 issues just wasnt long enough..! I just hope the movie stays pretty faithful to the book!

I've never actually heard of this but as it's written by Mark Millar I'm guessing its pretty damned excellent? :)

American Jesus was a great book with a very interesting twist at the end. I hope someone finds the balls to make this. I'm tired of films tip-toeing around religion.

The Chosen was a wicked book with a stunning ending that really comes out of the blue. Not sure if they could get away with a movie version of it though, the holy joe, bleeding heart brigade would be out thumping their collective craw en masse.Mind you ,look where we are with Kick Ass,man I can't wait for the circus when the tabloids jump on it !

Haha. The second coming will not be an incarnation. Every eye shall see him (Rev 1:7) This isn't mythology folks. He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. (Hebrews 9)
The true and everlasting Gospel is the raddest story ever told.

Xobten@ If it's respectful to religion the "bible thumpers" as you called them won't have a problem with it. (didn't hear much gripe about the book of Eli). If it degrades and ridicules religion (as most Hollywood movies dealing with the subject do) then yes, they have a problem with it.

And apparently Millar and Vaughn can't pick thier own projects since they got the door slammed In thier face on the superman movie.

The Book of Eli was a fictional story which contained the Bible as a significant object within the plotline. American Jesus seems to be severely distorting what is contained within the Bible. As a Christian, I view this story as conflicting with the Biblical account.

However, I do realize that I should probably check out the story itself. I do admire Mark Millar's creativity, it's just the distortion which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Mark Millar your a great writer, but please stop being a media WHORE. "I see it as a sequel to 'The Passion." Dude just shut the f0ck up for god sakes. I don't think genral ppl wanna see a movie about a second coming Jesus base on a comic book. I always thought the book was completely dumb, and boring.

Kick Ass = awesome

Chosen = terrible

SPOILERS:

Guy is talking about himself as a kid to a group of people. Most of the books are then "flashbacks". Kid thinks he's jesus. Kid turns water to wine and raises a dead dog. Kid gets leaves with government people. Guy now finished story and leaves on a plane. One of the people in the crowd goes "... Mr. President" and I think we see an american flag or AF1 in the background.

@blankofthedead, hellna wasnt preaching, just simply stating his/her opinion on the subject as everyone else has. never saying we should feel the same way. even saying they would check the story out anyway!

@hellna- Please don't quote the Bible here, I have to deal with that rubbish all the time. You say the Book of Eli is fictional? I think all of it is fictional...but that's just my opinion.

I'd love to see an American Jesus movie, I guess it's supposed to represnet how hung up Americans are on Chrisitanity, not all of course but ehw hole "God bless America" crap, I just find hilarious. :D

How open minded of you ryden. Very tolerant of others and thier beliefs. Bet you think your the open minded tolerant one too. As a practicing methodist I mean this from the heart.....your an ass. Americans are overwhelmengly religious, and not all Christian. If you don't like it go the fck somewhere else, we won't miss you.
KeithM

@Superdog: How very tolerant of YOU.

So it's ok to believe in an imaginary being, but if anyone dares say they find it "silly" (which it is) they can "go the fck somewhere else"? Hypocrisy at its finest.

Let me quote YOUR Constitution (specifically the first part of Amendment 1):

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,"

Do you actually understand that? This means that while you are free to exercise your religious beliefs, so are others free to NOT follow your - or any - religion and are explicitly granted the right of freedom of speech.

So Ryden - or anyone else - can say whatever they like about your - or any - religion and are protected in doing so by the Constitution itself.

So if you don't like what Ryden says, then YOU can fck off somewhere else because YOU'RE being anti-American by denying him his right to free speech.

Think on that for a moment.

Guys I think that would just come down to manners wouldn't you? Sure anyone ha the right to believe what they want and anyone has the right to think those beliefs are silly ..but preaching/scoffing one way or the other is just not very nice! Personally I'm not religious at all but unless someone was being overly preachy or condescending..or downright ignorant, I'm not going to lambaste them for mentioning that they are.

P.S Christians suck(Joke!)

Thanks for that Superdog, I've now sen the error of my ways. I'm going to go to Bible camp now, I'm going to believe whatever a 2000 year old book tells me to and hate everyone whos different from me. :D

^^^That is sarcasm.

Look mate I really don;t care what you think of me. My opinion is my opinion, take it or leave it. I wasn't being rude, all I said was I get enough of religion in my personal life it's just nippy to see it somewhere I tend to chill out. Because if I was rude about Christianity you'd know about it.

But then I don't want to get kicked off this wonderful site for talking about something that I think is a lot of bronzeage rubbish. IMO every religion is the same, there is no proof for any of them, so why worship something obviously false? Actually I better stop now with the religion thing before i blow a gasket.

And as for the America thing, i was saying I find it funny when I hear all of that "God bless America" garbage and all that stuff about how America is the only country on the planet God lives and sh!t, yeah ebcause that makes sense. I thought America was founded on the principle that ALL religions are welcome, they are not defined by one religion?

So dude, you can just chill the [frick] out.

@KeithM- Damn right man ;)
hellna
hellna - 2/28/2010, 9:00 AM
In stating my beliefs, I did so with the respect of other's free will and opinion in mind. I didn't come on here to prove people wrong or get all 'preachy'. Thanks for the constitutional review- people have a right to their opinions and beliefs even if they conflict with my own. I appreciate KeithM's entire statement, even though he disagrees with Christianity. Attacking another person in the name of Christianity isn't Christianity at all. It's Satanic. No wonder Christians are viewed as such hypocrites. We say that God is love but then tell our neighbor to go ... themselves. Well done. People profess their Christianity, but their actions tell another story.
If people actually read the gospels and saw how Jesus related to people and DID that Christianity would be a better presence in the world.
It's too bad that in America, the most outspoken Christians are the most bigoted.
God bless you all. Even the haters. :)
