"We're talking to some people over here, but I think we're gonna have to do ['American Jesus'] the way we did 'Kick-Ass' and make it outside the [Hollywood] system," Millar told IGN .
"Because I think the studios will be too nervous to do 'American Jesus.' Everybody has said that they want to do it, but nobody is stepping up."
"People were sniffing around 'American Jesus' and everybody wanted to do it, but they were really nervous about the subject matter, and genuinely, somebody [said] to me 'Is there anyway we can do 'American Jesus', but maybe take Jesus out of it?'"
"I loved that, It had to be the most brilliantly Hollywood thing I've ever heard [because] Jesus is in every scene in that book and its about the second coming. And they were saying 'can we make it some kind of analogy of Jesus? Or maybe call him David?' I was like 'No, it's got to be 'American Jesus.'' They said ' I just don't know if anybody would go and see a movie with Jesus in it.' And I [said] 'Well, 'The Passion' made $650 million!'"
"I see it as a sequel to 'The Passion', added Millar. "'The Passion' is kind of the origin and this is the next part. I feel there's certainly a market for that kind of thing and if you treat it with respect... then I think the audience will come."
Originally titled
Chosen, the comic was published by by Dark Horse in 2004, Millar and artist Peter Gross'
American Jesus follows a 12-year-old boy who discovers that he might be the second coming of Jesus Christ. With
Kick Ass making huge waves and being hailed as a mini masterpiece by many critics, I would think both Millar and Mathew Vaughan could have the pick of the projects over the next while so I can see this happening. The controversial religious themes woulds also pave the way for Preacher..MAKE PREACHER!!
I haven't read American Jesus myself but it sounds like its worth a go. Anyone here like/loathe it?
