Artist Chris Sprouse Drops Out Of Orson Scott Card SUPERMAN Story

DC Comics recently came under fire after their decision to appoint noted anti-gay writer Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game) to work on their latest Superman anthology series, and now the project has lost illustrator Chris Sprouse..

When DC commissioned Ender's Game author Orson Scott Card to write the Adventures of Superman digital comic coming this April, the backlash was predictably severe. Card, a long-time critic of homosexuality, has called gay marriage "the end of democracy in America", and in 2009 he became a board member of the National Organization for Marriage - a group that campaigns against same-sex marriage. The news has sparked outrage in many circles, and now the artist that was set to collaborate with Card on the project has stepped away.

Here is what Sprouse had to say in a statement:

"It took a lot of thought to come to this conclusion, but I've decided to step back as the artist on this story. The media surrounding this story reached the point where it took away from the actual work, and that's something I wasn't comfortable with. My relationship with DC Comics remains as strong as ever, and I look forward to my next project with them."

DC also issued a statement supporting Sprouse, and revealing that because of his departure the story that was to feature he and Card would be pushed back to a later date. The first issue launches digitally on April 29, and then in print starting May 29th.

Good. Orson Scott Card is entitled to his ridiculous beliefs. And Sprouse is entitled to walk away from the project. Hopefully other artists refuse to work with OSC. Just like I'm never going to pay for anything OSC does.

- whoopdee [frick].

Cowards.

So DC can introduce a gay character to show diversity- but instead they take an established hetero character of 70 years and arbitrarily MAKE him gay.

A writer believes that the 5000 historical precedent of hetero/religious marriage is sacred and he is ineligible to write for dc.

Try not to break your shoulder patting yourselves on the back.

Zillafart can stop offering reach-arounds and get overitself. Filthy creature.

I'm kinda mad that this story was pushed back because I was looking forward to it. Hopefully whatever story they put in the "Adventures of Superman #1" slot will be good. I can't wait for this series to start!

Wow. Whatever happened to free speech and accepting people with different opinions then you?

These people claim to be so tolerant of everyone but they cant accept when someone has a different opinion then them that they have to bully people out of work. theyre as bad as the people they claim to hate, so sad.

I hope everyone bashing Card on this site at least holds to the courage of their convictions and vehemently protests and bashes the new film of Ender's Game, Card's seminal and classic work of science fiction.

@Fastestmanalive

Why must we accept hatred and prejudice? This isn't a "different opinion." This is hate. These people don't deserve respect in any way, shape or form. If you don't understand the difference, things are wrong with you.

If it's someone's opinion that all babies ought to be killed, should we accept that as well? Is that all good in the hood? Christ, some of you oughta listen to yourselves.

@AlexTheKaiser
"I've just realized that the people who attack the gay community and the people who attack the homophobic are almost the exact same thing. Just with different view points, but basically the same."

This is just mind-numbingly stupid. Wanna know the difference? One side irrationally hates (and often hurts) a group of people for their sexual preference, something they can't help. Kids are killing themselves because of constant bullying and persecution, and these types of people are responsible. The other side obviously DOESN'T REALLY APPRECIATE THAT. This really shouldn't need explaining. There is such astounding stupidity on this site. Some of you clearly don't understand this, but being tolerant of intolerance doesn't make a whole bunch of sense.

When views are based on misconceptions, falsehoods, and good ol' bigotry, they are NOT valid opinions. Simple as that.

Idiots.

Card is legitimately a very good writer. And rather prolific, too.
I can't say that counterbalancing hate and spite is at all a bad thing, but I hope when you pick up something of Card's to read, it'll at least partially be because what he's written is worth your time.

Back to the primary topic:
I don't agree with OSC's beliefs and I'm therefore predisposed to not like how he comes across when talking about them, but I'm also remarkably uninterested in his personal life. I read his fiction without letting what I know of him as a person cast a shadow over the characters he's created.
If he ever wrote and published a book with a clear and heavy handed anti-gay slant, I would neither buy it nor read it, but it's existence isn't going to dilute my enjoyment of "Ender's Game".

The reason why the people who are affronted by the idea of Card writing this story aren't upset just because he has a different opinion. A different opinion is fine. Hue is a chairperson and funder of NOM the National Organization for Marriage. The primary goal of this organization is to financially lobby and and campaign against equal marriage laws.
DC wrote him a paycheck funding Card is funding NOM. In that sense DC comics indirectly funded support against equal marriage laws.

It's the same as if he was chair man of an Anti-semitic group or a pro-slavery lobby.

Sprouse as an artist is sturdy enough to not care one way our the other and just didn't want his work to be viewed as anything but another part to Ann already negative story. That's respectable.

Reading some of these comments are nauseating. @DeadmanDan: glad to see that there are still compassionate and understanding people in this world. As a gay man myself (I'm probably going to get vilified by the idiots on here) I'd like to say thank you for your statement. I find it silly got these so called comic book fans say they agree with this bigot, and yet the books they read (X-Men) is supposed to teach them about accepting people in general and not be intolerant how hypocritical of them shame on them. let's hope they can continue to evolve themselves open their minds and realize we are all human beings and we should all treat one another with love and respect. PEACE!!

I don't have a problem with a gay writer so why do gays have a problem with card? Sounds like hypocrits to me. It's the end of America when someone is attacked for a belief. Gays say they just want live and let live...I guess unless you have a belief against them-- then they attack you. Hypocrits me thinks.
unknownfacts
unknownfacts - 3/5/2013, 11:03 PM
If Card's anti beleif comes from a religious back round then there is nothing technically wrong with it as there are verses in the bible that are against homo-sexuality but none which says to physically harm those that are gay.Now if it's from a personal stand point that homosexuality is the down fall of society well there isn't much we can do about that either. After all he lives in America where most people are entitled to their own opinion no matter how bone head/misinform it maybe. So long the man doesn't physically harm a gay person the man is entitled to his own opinion.

The whole lot of you are mindless bullies who can't think for yourselves. Orson Scott Card NEVER uttered a single hateful word towards the LGBT community. He believes, as I do, that the best form of marriage is between a man and a woman. We could argue the ins and outs of this complex message or we can all be adults and stop bashing a man for his own private opinions. You don't see me boycotting Hollywood for all the dumb [crap] they say and do. I watch movies, TV shows, listen to music- do whatever I like, no matter what the artist's opinion is. Stop bullying people that think differently than you. Boycotting and character-bashing IS bullying.
