Central Characters Being Supporting Characters

Central Characters Being Supporting Characters

Have you noticed how the titles of recent films are more about the supporting characters? I have.

wolverine and the x-men

There are many different ways that fans are shorted on seeing thier favorite comic heroes on screen.  They have powers they shouldn't. They look completely different. They act in no way as they should. In this editorial I hope to address some of these issues. Sometimes they are altogether alien from the charecter they are to portray. I am a Marvel/IDW fanboy so take what I say with a grain of salt.  With that said, I have certain problems when characters I love are misrepresented I really do feel like someone in the studio just smacked my grandmother.  On the other hand, when characters I don't really care for get an update I resound with joy.  This article however, deals with the one thing any real fan boy can't really tolerate, or at least that's how I think about it.  The phenomonon is akin to getting tickets to the Superbowl and somehow being locked in a bathroom at the stadium with nothing more than a fuzzy radio that for some reason is picking up an elementary pee-wee game.  There are many instances where we tune-in or buy a ticket to see what we hope will blow our minds. We hope to have a rich story involving our most loved characters.  That isn't what we experience though.  Due to Hollywood just wanting to cash in on our childhood dreams at a very inexpensive cost, we get stories about characters that have met or live in the same universe as the characters we wanted to see.  There are some great examples. Transformers, Agents of SHIELD, X-men, and I believe TMNT.  This article will address my own frustration with each.

shai and mark

The Transformers I remember ever had anything to do with humans.  Sure, Spike and his dad were present but extremely minor characters.  In the most recent Transformer trailer, I counted 30 seconds of Transformers in the 2:30 trailer.  It really seems to be an honest trailer in comparison to the horrible movies that predated it.  All it missed was Shai going "No, no, no, no, no..."  Even the original Transformers erked me.  Jazz was killed off because he was a distinct character.  He didn't just melt away with Ironhide and the others into "Indescript Robots" So instead of a story about the Autobots overcoming the forces of the Decepticons to advert the direst of consequences, I got some whiny kid's experience with Bumblebee who couldn't even speak and everything I wanted to see kinda happened in the background due to over complexity of the Transformers design.  How amazing would it have been to gotten a much simpler Optimus Prime with much more story and much less Shai?   It really comes down to money.  Studios give us a few really great scenes that cost millions to make and hope the story can ride on that.  It can't.

Shield

Yep,  I'm a AOS hater.  Sure am.  Aside from the incredibly cheesey acting, real agents wouldn't act in such away.  SHEILD agents don't sit around crying and taking on just anyone into an agency of such high security clearance.  I understand this show is about SHIELD. I completely understand that.  SHEILD deals with Superheroes and Supervillians.  What do we the viewer get? Not the B list, Not even the C-list.  We get horrifically unbelievable character in a less believable team.  Once in a while the C-list shows it's face as a cameo.   I understand SFX are expensive.  But I'd rather watch the 1970's version of Captain American than this.  At least it had Captain America.  Why not do with AoS what Arrow has done.  Bring a B-list character to light and show him to have A-list qualities.  Some might say that's Agent Coulson.  Sorry, as a fanboy it's hard for me to give and credibility to that.  I want a real superhero.  How about Red Hulk or even Carol Danvers? Instead, we get a spear, and some Chitari hunk of junk.  If we wanted to stay cheap, Frank Castle would be much more fitting. The Avengers showed the MCU Earth it wasn't alone in the universe let's see the Kree or the Skrulls...  Sorry AoS is extremely underwhelming because there isn't any emphasis on really making it amazing.  It is nothing but a desperate attempt to squeeze every last cent that can be squeezed from Marvel fans.

Wolverine

The X-men has been my favorite comic back before the Age of Apocalypse. It spoke to me as student of philosophy.  It is utterly tragic that the X-men have taken a backseat to Wolverine.  While Wolverine is an important character in the history of the X-men, he doesn't encompass the X-men.  There has only been one X-men movie that wasn't about him but the guy still gets a cameo.  The X-men in general, in my opinon, have seen the least amount of respect when it comes to being true to the comics.  The supporting characters in the 6 Wolverine movies that have been created should have been the stars.  Cyclops and Jean Grey are exponentally more important to the X-men than Wolverine.  Storm, Iceman, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Gambit, Actual Rogue and Beast are more important to the X-men than Wolverine.  The focus was so heavy on getting Logan right that they didn't even bother with the rest of them.  Storm is Egyptian, Colossus is Russian and Banshee is Irish.  But those things are easy to ignore as long as Wolverine is good.  So why do this?  Is the Phoenix Saga not incredible and deserving of a much richer piece of the silver screen?  No.  It's because Wolverine's claws are cheaper than an intergalatic war.

Megan Sux

When I was a kid I had every TMNT figure there was, except April O'Neil.  She was just hard to find.  It was no big deal to me though.  From everything I have seen,  the upcoming TMNT movie feels exactly the opposite.  No this is just another chance for Megan Fox to strut around in a Micheal Bay movie. I know he's not directing it but you can be assured that he is the reason she is there.  However, If I was to watch this movie I wouldn't want see April, I want to see Leonardo, Rapheal, Michelagelo, Donatello and Splinter, and maybe some Casey Jones. This will be another movie where the main characters take a back seat to a cheaper supporting character in hopes to make more money. Sure, that's the name of the game though right?  But really think about it, how much more money would be made if they went all out?  What if the we had the story of the Ninja Tribunal?  What if we had a story that had nothing to with April at all and just focused on the growth of each turtle?  These turtles will just be flat characters with no depth.  Like most other major character that have been pushed into supporting roles, because they are more expensive to spend time on.  This article was written in response to the recent TMNT trailer and the frustration as a fan grows with each insult the industry smears our noses in an then tells us it smells like roses.  Sorry, I can't sit by and not complain.

What if you'd went to the theaters to see this:

Avengers

And got this?

It may have been an ok movie but it certainly wasn't the Avengers.

This is just the rants of one fanboy trying to relay his frustrations.  I'm looking forward to everything but the new Transformers and TMNT movies. I don't have a specific studio that I think is better than another. I just want to see the characters I adore represented with respect for the characters and their fans.  I know that pisses some people off and they accuse me of being petty when I should just be happy that I am getting something.  Sorry, Corn Beef, and Chitlings aren't enough for me.  I hope I said somethings here that people can agree with but I'm sure this article will get flack from plenty others.  As I said, this is just my opinion.

uh your AOS stuff is ridiculous. the've shown tons of comic characters. just not the ones YOU want to see. if you want to gripe about the acting or something sure whatever. but just because the shows are saving the B and C list characters for movies doesn't mean it sucks. Arrow can show whoever it wants because its not tied to anything. comparing the two is a bad comparison. also, graviton and deathlok are both pretty much as C list as your going to get. not to mention nick fury, maria hill, blizzard is well know.

I stick by what I said. The entire point is that show is done extremely cheaply and that's why we don't see more major characters. Deathlok is an improvement but was easy to make cheap. I would like to see them up the ante. If they think this show is SO GREAT then they need to put their money where their mouth is. It's obviously Disney trying to squeeze every red cent out of the Marvel name. Hell, even Once Upon A Time has better visual effects. The stories Marvel has to offer is much better than that. You mentioned Gravatron and Blizzard but neither of them bared any real resemblance to their comic counter parts. Just cheap imitations. As for Nick Fury, and Maria Hill, those were split second cameos. So far the best thing we have seen on AoS has been Lady Sif. Oh and the "Kree" wasn't even animated. A background prop isn't a feature. AoS is a watered down Disney show using the Marvel name.

Not to defend Disney, but Marvel really is its own studio. Yes Disney owns it, and they make money off it, but they actually really let the studio make its own decisions. So if you want to blame someone, simply blame Loeb, Feige, etc.

Lastly, Fury and Hill weren't "split second" cameos. Both had full scenes. Still cameos, but you exaggerate.

Also, I find it interesting that Jazz was killed off for being a distinct character. He was THE Transformer I was happy to see taken out, since the goofy vocabulary was cringeworthy. Though, the twins in the second film made Jazz seem Shakespearian.

The show is about normal people in a world with super heroes. Its about the effect that would have on them if their mission continuously puts them in contact with these situations. Thats why the show is getting better. Cause its starting to change them.....your getting to see the effects now.....and its paying off. The acting, the effects, its all gotten better. It feels natural too.....because if you go back and watch the first episode again, they all seem so naive. They think its simple, thats its so cut and dry. Now we're getting to see the effect its having on them. If you want superheroes, your getting them. Several movies a year, plus four shows on Netflix each to follow its own superhero. This show....is about normal people....who just happen to be agents for a goverment agency and the missions put them into contact with situations their really not prepared for. Guess its not your cup of tea.

Oh, and by the way......those episodes with Gravitron and Blizzard.....those were just their origin stories. So their not going to look like their comic book counterparts at all. Next time we see them they could though. Lorelei was done pretty good, and she started the episode dressed like an Asgardian. Deathlok looks great too.

The thing you said about needing an outsider, whether it's April, or Shia LaBeef, etc, is completely correct. You need someone for the audience to be able to use as a surrogate, someone they can vicariously live these experiences through, as well as someone that can have the plot explained to them at times, also for the audience. It's not in any way a new device that's been employed only in the last few years, or even the last few decades.

I love what AoS is doing. As far as them having "better" characters, they can't use any one they want because they have to be mindful of future movies and continuity.

I see where this article is coming from, especially in regards to AOS. I do watch the show and it's slowly getting better, but the smartest thing they did was tie it to the MCU. That is the reason I truly watch the show is to see how it connects to the bigger things, other than that it would be a done deal. I've said this before and I'll say it again, the cast with the exception of May and Coulson is terrible. There is nothing to root for in these characters or care about and they're not appealing at all. Add the cheesy dialogue and production, you're pretty much cringing doing most of the show. I do agree it looks cheap in comparison to the many other good shows on T.V. I honestly think they were finding their footing this season to see how to proceed and flow and like May mentioned in that interview, it isn't easy for the writers to work parallel with something on a larger scale so I'll give them that. Again the smartest thing they did. But production and character wise they do need to step it up. It's no excuse anymore, come S2 they should be hitting full throttle every episode leaving an impression. That's what I want from them, they just need to put 100% in this show b/c it really shows when they don't.

@Rodimuspryme well yeah wall-e did well at the BO. but then again, didn't transformers make like 1.2 billion at the box office with their outsiders? So take your pick...

Also you can't expect non cheep characters to show up on screen. Arrow has shown nobody that is hard to make on screen. Deathstroke is essentially in a really cool military style suit with a mask on. not expensive. In fact deathlok is far from cheep, he is probably a much more expensive character then anything we have seen from arrow, the CGI, armour is different. So to say the show is made cheep isn't the greatest thing in the world.

To say that the viewer NEEDS an outsider who's human to relate to is such a stretch. There have been MANY beloved movies where this is in no way the case. Take Wall-E for example. Here is a movie about a robot that everyone loved and did incredibly well at the box office. There is a reason The Transformers and the Ninja Turtles are anthropomorphic. That is where you relate with the characters. With the latest incarnations, the viewer isn't even given the chance. They are given flat characters without any depth. I believe this makes those characters more and more forgettable. How is Michelangelo a ninja when he never takes anything seriously and just plays video games and eats pizza? How does Optimus Prime feel about decisions that he makes as a leader? Can't we investigate those motives more instead of the ever so predictable fainting and freaking out when our lead characters are discovered. It's an annoying movie cliche. "Oh, here it comes. April O'Neil is going to faint." I give the human race a bit more credit than to believe that they can only relate with a human face. While it may be some what projecting we relate with our pets. Take movies like Milo & Otis, or Homeward Bound for example, those stories were wonderful and barely had anything to do with humans. Another example is how people relate to R2D2 and he has no anthropomorphic characteristics at all; only beeps and hums to allow the viewer to connect with him. Sure, Star Wars, is way more than R2D2 but it still illustrates the fact that people can relate to things outside of their immediate comfort zones. We should be striving to do that as a society anyway. District 9 tackled this very subject with pure finesse. We had an alien with completely foreign expressions, and we related. The idea of this whole thought process is the very reason that we as humans find it hard to progress. Anything different from ourselves isn't hard to relate to we are just more unlikely to. Maybe, that's why children get so much more enjoyment out of something so fantastic. They have yet to be conditioned to ignore things they don't immediately relate with. They are fascinated. Many of us as adults do refuse to allow ourselves to be fascinated by anything alien to us. This is more of a discussion in ethics than it is about movies and for that I apologize. But watch Wall-E and tell me how the humans in it were anything other than a plot device. Tell me you didn't understand the connection between Wall-E and EVE or EVE's panic when she thought she'd lost Wall-E. This is Disney at its very best. I'm sure other production companies and directors can do much better. Why is it such a fallacy to hope for progression instead of mediocrity? Can we only understand Thor and Loki's pain of losing their mother because they have human faces? I believe and hope there is a much more capable audience out there that is more of a majority than we are lead to believe.

@dougieisrollingthejays, Sorry, I just proof read my last statement and corrected. I was merely trying to state the view of a fanboy, someone who knows the depth and richness of the characters that they are seeing so poorly portrayed. I understand this is really hard to grasp when people aren't familiar with source material. If Frodo was all but removed from the Lord of the Rings or Gandalf was changed to the point he was unrecognizable there would have been much less adoration of those films. I guess I just want everyone to see my favorite characters for who I know them to be. When they take backstage to a supporting character, it's mind blowing. I'll be the first one to say Arrow has ton's of problems. I don't know if I can take anymore flashbacks... The acting is pretty bad too. With Transformers and TMNT, I think practicality could be used to make the characters more of individuals with independent motives. There wasn't a need for thousand of moving parts in the Transformers which made the CGI ridiculously expensive. It could have been much more simple and still have wowed movie goers. That way there could have been more screen time with the Transformers instead of Shai LeBouf. TMNT is one of those childhood jewels for me and I know I'm just going to see another Megan Fox movie when the Turtles have so much more to offer. :/ I wasn't trying to create an argument. I was trying to give perspective. Anyway, I knew it would be ill-received. Just remember though if there was never a fanboy, this site, and the movies that inspired this site never would have existed.
