Comic Book Characters in Need of Big Screen Love, The Sequel

Comic Book Characters in Need of Big Screen Love, The Sequel

Based on comments from readers, I put some more thought into a few movie-deserving comic book characters. I know...me? Putting thought into something? pfft...

I'm mainly focusing on characters that aren't necessarily obvious candidates, but have great potential nonetheless. And I am aware many of these are already at some level of production.

Inhumans:

A very important and closely-tied extension of the Fantastic Four, for which the movie is undergoing rebooting itself, the Inhumans would be a great story element to a new FF film, and therefore already be well set-up for their own spin-off. Unfortunately due to licensing issues, this would shut the door on an opportunity for the Inhumans to meet up with aforementioned cosmic characters(Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy)....and that's an extended universe I'd love to see.

Thunderbolts:

Imagine over the next several Marvel films encountering on different levels the villains of Baron Zemo, Moonstone, Ghost(for whom I read a comment by one of you saying he'd make the best Iron Man 3 villain, and I agree)....then all of them becoming a "superhero" team in disguise. After a couple of Avengers movies, how awesome would it be for the Avengers to be the "villains" in a well-written Thunderbolts movie that could take an alternate look at the Marvel U. Ant-Man would be a great addition, as he was in the comics as the T-Bolt's anti-anti-hero with less than evil intentions. Once again, licensing rights tie up potential greatness: Norman Osborn as leader/crazy dick and Venom as a man-eating member, due to their characters belonging with Spider-Man, and Bullseye is likewise stuck to Daredevil.

Luke Cage/Iron Fist:

I have doubts about how successful as mainstream properties these would be as two separate films, but if Marvel were to embrace these guys' long history together, they could make a very interesting superhero/buddy flick with two unique characters. Play off of their glaring differences in a smart, not hokey way, but also focus on why they're friends, co-workers, and why they trust each other in the pursuit criminal assbeating. Then throw them into Avengers 2 or 3. Done.

Ms. Marvel:

A great opportunity for Marvel to pick up some female fans. And the guys will like it, assuming its well-made. I just spent way too long searching through pictures of her for one to use. (You're welcome for choosing the one I did.) She's built into the overall universe as a SHIELD agent. Her origin would be easy to incorporate and unique as well. Once again, give us a movie with her, then throw her into the mix for an Avengers sequel.

The Flash:

One of the few easily-identifiable comic book superheroes yet to be made into a film, the Flash has a lot of potential if filmmakers choose wisely from his long history. It would be an awesomely visual movie, and though I'm not a huge fan of 3-D, this one done properly could be the best 3-D film ever. And humor has always been a great aspect to the Flash, so get Ryan Reynolds to play him too. I kid...but maybe Chris Pine would be a good pick. This movie is only a matter of time, and I'm honestly surprised it hasn't gotten past "in development" phase, though IMDB has it listed for 2013.

Black Panther:

I'm pretty sure Wakanda was one of the spots on the map in Iron Man 2, so Marvel is already planning this guy's debut. One of several excellent opportunities to spotlight a badass black character, Black Panther would have cool technology, fight scenes, and the combination of naturally-beautiful African landscapes and the highly-advanced society in which he rules. Throw in a threat that could affect America as well, and SHIELD and certain Avengers can cameo. Follow successful formula: 1. Make High-quality origin feature. 2. Add him to the next Avengers flick, and Bob's your uncle. Thanks @intruder for the pic.

Preacher:

This one's tricky. I don't want to say it can't be done, but this would be as close to "unfilmable" as Watchmen's Alan Moore said his property was. Now since I like the Watchmen movie despite its faults, I'll support the proper handling of Preacher. With such a finite story compared to most comics, and with each little aspect of story and character development being, in my opinion, essential to the overall experience, maybe it would work better as a TV series, similar in quality to The Walking Dead...maybe on HBO? Or a few well-made hard-R movies? The pic I found is disturbing and delightful.

In order for me
1:Deadpool
2:Black Panther
3:Moon Knight
4:Dr. Strange
5:Luke Cage/Iron Fist
6:Gaurdians of the Galaxy

First off I love both lists with the exception of no Deadpool. It would make a great movie, its in production and caught in preproduction he11 since Origins. There is a director and two great writers in place, but they arent going anywhere with it...Black Panther and Moon Knight two great characters with great origin stories that would translate well to the big screen. Dr. Strange is a great character that would bring more of the cosmos into the MCU out of this list I would definitely want to see a Luke Cage/Iron Fist movie could be GREAT! Iron Fist is one of my all time favorite characters but they are not very well known characters therefore the budget would be small and it would have be done perfect. I've never beenmuch of an Inhumans fan but the movie would be a great watch.

MARVEL will always tell you indirectly who they have on the back burner through the comics.
Case and point: I got back from my local comic shop a few hours ago, and the freebee's by the register arrreee...
'Point One'( mini-poster). On it are Dr. Strange and Nova(among others).
2nd freebee: 'The Defenders'. Again Dr.Strange, and also Iron Fist. Namor and Silver Surfer are part of the team, but Fox owns them right now, so that's a 'wait-and-see'.(Red She-Hulk too, but doubt she's being considered right now)
Okay Doc Strange , Iron Fist and Nova.
These are your three hero's which are definitely in pre-production...and that's very cool with me!

@Intruder

Those are impressive for fan-made or even studio made.

@herokiller

I agree with your thoughts about the Deadpool movie it has to be R and you have to get a Tarantino like director that can do the high action/blood mixed with comedy and mix in the pop culture that Tarantino does so well and that also makes up a very big part of Deadpool.

One thing that I really hope they do if the movie ever gets made is open with Deadpool's night time talk show and have Deadpool interview RR who I am assuming is still going to play him, and have him talking to us as if we were his studio audiance. That will set the tone for the movie being funny and 4th wall breaking.

I don't think there will ever be a Deadpool movie. Not a big enough market for his brand of superhero movie. Sure folks like us would pay to see it, but I think most of the gen. public would think it was a Dirty Harry remake.

@deadinthepool: Tarantino would make a good if not great director for it, but it would have to tie in to all the other movies he has made. Thats just how he rolls. All of his movies take place in the universe he set up in Bastards.

And I would pay double for a Black Panther movie.

Nice article.

I personally would love to see a Deomon Etrigan movie, he would be like the anti hero, kinda like Jack Sparrow, being a villain and a hero at the same time.

But he would be crazy and maniacal, far from noble with little regard for humans and doing it for his own enjoyment.

Genre wise Im thinking fantasy adnventure/horror, I think it would be kick ass.

It should be based on Jack Kirbys origianl series from the 70s, that was good.

I dont know why ur focusing mainly on Marvel and the only DC hero u could come up with is the Flash.

From ur choices it looks like ur going for variety with powers and genres and DC has no shortage of that, heres a few for u.

Green Lantern- A real sci fi space adventure like star wars.

The Demon Etrigan, like I mentioned above.

Hawkman-Indiana Jones/ the Mummy type adventure, dealing with mystic forces from ancient times, Hawkman being an archeologist and a reincarnation of an Eygyptian prince and all.

Firestorm- more of a light family movie whom teenagers can identify with, Ronnie Raymond going thru high school or college while having these fantastic powers, being immature and reckless but having Prof Stein to keep him reined in, the only comparison that comes to mind is Sky High but a bit more serious.

Aquaman-300 but under water, I know most people say Wonder woman should be DC's 300, but I think her story should be a bit more real modern world. Aquaman is a king after all and a warrior so this could defently work.

Swamp thing- weird horror, but Swamp thing would still be the hero, just read his original series from Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson from the 70s to know what Im talkin about.

Zatanna- fun adventure like Pirates of the Carribean but with magic.

I got a couple more but Ill leave it at this for now.
