Could We See a Watchmen Sequel Soon?

With Paul Levitz stepping down from DC Comics as President, we actually could...

This is from Bleeding Cool.com:

When the news broke that Paul Levitz was stepping down from DC Comics as both President and Publisher, I wondered what that meant for the possibility of a Watchmen sequel. Certainly in a hundred years, you couldn’t expect there not to be one.

Well, it seems to be happening a lot sooner than I thought. I understand now that this considered a pet project of Dan DiDio, SVP-Executive Editor. That he is determined to impress new bosses by building on DC’s biggest selling comic book of all time with multiple prequel comic miniseries and spinoff ongoing projects.

Both Jim Baike, Rich Veitch and Gene Ha/Zander Cannon are artists who have taken on writing chores on books previously written by Alan Moore, to continue the storyline. The most creatively-acceptable solution would be Dave Gibbons writing and drawing new Watchmen titles. But DiDio’s plans seem much larger than just one book.

And of course, in those initial movie contracts with Fox, there was a clause that included sequels to a Watchmen movie.

When asked, Dave Gibbons only replied “Hurm…”

Ozymandias: All I can say is, Please don't do this DC! Watchmen is fine the way it is! Just leave it alone and make some other new graphic novel.

Please no, but if they do I would be interested to see what happen to Dr. Manhatan when he left the Milky Way!

I think the whole point of "Watchmen" is that you are vaguely unsure about whether the world finds out about Ozymandias' plan... This would ruin it.

Never happen..and not because they would be afraid of pissing all over the legacy of the comic or its fans, but because Watchmen wasn't considered enough of a financial success to spin any more movie from.

You do know that people beyond Lee-Ditko have created viable Spider-man stories. The most creatively-acceptable solution would be Dave Gibbons? Okay let's clear the air, the Watchmen is not loved as among the greatest if not the greatest graphic novel because of Dave Gibbons art work. It is brilliant because of Alan Moore period. Their are other artist who would have done a much better job than Gibbons. It's only because of Gibbon's good not brilliant contribution that the Watchmen is not held to be the absolute Numero Uno master piece over all it's competition[The Dark Knight Return's etc].

The only way I could see this working would be if they made a prequel film that simply helped flesh out the relationships from "Watchmen". Something that (unlike the new Star Wars trilogy) would actually flow seamlessly before the original film. Imagine a (non-flashback filled) film where Ozymandias is the ultimate force for good and Nite Owl put Batman to shame and Rorschach lived by a strong moral code. Just put them in a high-adrenaline JLA type movie where they are revered by everyone. Think of how more impact the bleak future of "Watchmen" would have, especially for future generations who would watch the prequel first and then get to the original and be like, "Oh, my God! Things have fallen apart!" Usually I say leave well enough alone, but done right -it could work.

Eh, it won't happen EVER. Believe me. It'd take forever for someone to even grow the nads to write another Watchmen story (surely Gibbons ain't THAT dumb). A movie wouldn't work at all cause the fan favorite character is DEAD. I'm not worried about this news for it's just a wild idea. I think Spider-Man will be killed off first before Watchmen comics get a sequel/prequel.

Watchmen = Magnum Opus

I would only consider reading it if it is based around the Minutemen or the early Watchmen. I love Hollis Mason, so I'd love to see some Minutemen action, but even so. No Alan Moore means no way.

Batman's history would not be the same without Frank Miller's contribution. If done right, further Watchman titles could be brilliant. Just as long as DC doesn't turn it into a mess. I don't think their should be a monthly series but a series of one offs. The Watchmen should not be held to a monthy dead line, The Watchmen is epic and should be treated with respect.Hopefully Dan DiDio is not just determined to impress new bosses cause Danny boy President and Publisher of DC Comics may be a plush job it is still a job.President and Publisher come and go but the Watchmen are forever!

OZY: Good find but I hope you're joking about having an origin movie for each of the characters because thats a terrible idea, lol!

Talking of terrible ideas, a Watchmen sequel most definitely is one! Besides, the movie didnt do that well financially did it? I cant see them spending any more on a second outing.

@ Everyone - The comments made were talking about prequel/sequel COMICS. A prequel movie still won't get made for a while, cause the one guy who stopped it from being an ongoing comic before has moved over to the film department of DC. Once he steps down, we may start hearing about new movies, but as of right now, its not gonna happen.

Go to Slashfilm.com to read the same article, but better, with a little more information from the original source.

Go ahead, f**k it up, beat the life and legacy right out of it. What dumb f**k would want, or need a sequel to a movie that by all rights was not ever in need of one? Some people are just that stupid, any idea, or rumor of a sequel proves my point.

The only way in hell I will ever buy a new Watchmen book or see a sequel to the Watchmen movie is if Alan Moore himself writes it. This is among the most horrible ideas I have ever heard.

If they are going to do one, which they will cause of money, Id love for an origin story of the characters.

Why would we have an origin story when we got tons of backstory in the comic itself??? Unless they pick up Moore's and Gibbons' original idea of a prequel about the Minutemen (too bad that didn't happen)...
