Do You Need To Know The End Before You See The Beginning?

Are you fascinated with spoilers or do you avoid them like the plague?

When you see the word spoiler in an article, do you A. Avert your eyes quickly and scan past the part or B. Go right to that section to learn the inside scoop? Learning the basic overview of a movie or the ins and outs of one particular scene get me going and leave me wanting more, hopefully. If it’s the full script or major plot points for I movie that I’m definitely seeing, I am not interested. In our Internet culture of I want it now, spoilers are that much harder to avoid.

When the script story line for Wolverine: Origins got put on CBM, I started reading the article and could not stop myself from finishing it. My first reaction was this is a hoax, no way they are making the movie like this. Lo and Behold, I went to the movie and saw everything coming. Now, Origins is not one of the best CBM’s out there but I found it to be decent overall. The hardest part, though, was knowing everything that was coming. It did not help my cinematic experience at all. It was like reading the final chapter of a mystery novel first.

There are others out there who relish everything as soon as it is available. They say it heightens the experience and doesn’t ruin anything for them. There have been articles here about Iron Man (novelization), Green Lantern (first draft script) and Kick-Ass (stays close to comic book) letting us fans know what we are in store for. I try to avoid these like the plague. Most authors of said articles have been careful enough to let us know what’s coming with the SPOILER word or use hidden text. For that, I am grateful.

Fans of the TV show Lost should be able to identify with this. There are those that want to see everything unfold on the screen and wait for the next episode in anticipation. The other side likes to know what’s coming so they can better examine why specific points or dialogue are happening and better see the connections.

I opt for the anticipation side. Not knowing exactly where the story is going just helps to immerse me more into the film’s experience.

So, where do you stand on this?

By the way-The butler did it, Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense is a ghost and Darth Vader is Luke’s father.

Great article! Spoilers never bothered me in the slightest, the more of them the better IMO. But there are certain spoilers that should NEVER EVER be mentionned in an article even if there is a spoiler alert. Like a tragic death that no one could have possibly predicted prior to seeing the film for instance. It's just too big of a bomb to put in a review or scoop article. There's just no need or warrant for it. It's completely uncalled for and really REALLY spoils the fun for everyone. Alot enjoy spoilers but when something that dramatic happens, it's better left to be experienced in theaters IMO.

Oh and here's a big South Park spoiler, THE SIMPSONS DID IT!!!! You name it, what ever South Park wants to do, the Simpsons did it all. So i just spoiled the whole series of South Park for everyone, nyah :P

so awesome how you mentioned lost because that is the one thing i prefer not to be spoiled on. only because it's so much fun theorizing!

when it comes to comics and their movie adaptations i really don't care. in fact with the books i would rather know the ending before i buy a trade or a HC. i've wasted my money way too many times on stories i thought would be good (im looking at you maximum carnage! and you secret invasion!) that i would rather build my collection with actual good stories. knowing what transpires wont take away from the structure of the story or the art. same with a movie. when it comes to IM i already know plenty about him. i know how he became iron man (consider iron man #1 a huge spoiler for the movie lol) and pretty much everything up until now - secretary of defense, head of shield, initiative ect - so it's not like anything is going to happen in a movie that i don't already know about Tony Stark - unless they wanna go the SR route and give him a son! lol

i guess im saying i really dont consider anything about CBMs a spoiler because we already know so much about the character. more than any movie could ever say. it's just fun to see which elements from which books made it into the movie.

if you're afriad of spoilers i'd suggest not reading any of Johns' run on GL because that will probably spoil the next 5 GL movies for you. the fun of it is seeing how it's played out on screen. you can't really spoil anything about stories we've already read.

lost is different because it's not based off a book or comic or anything that's previously been published and there's still more story to tell.

I guess it should be no surprise that most of the members here welcome the spoilers (with obvious exceptions as mentioned by Shaman).

Me? I fall in the category of "A. Avert your eyes quickly and scan past the part ". I want everything to be fresh (whether or not I have an idea what to expect because I read it in the book) and experience it for the 1st time. I'm so bad, some times I refuse to watch trailers of a movie I already know I am going to watch regardless. I haven't even seen the full Iron-man 2 trailer for that same reason. I've said this before and I stick to it. Previews are meant to sell me on whether or not I will watch the movie. When it comes to certain CBMs, nothing outside of a alcohol induced coma or DEATH will keep me from watching them (ex: Thor, Cap, IM2, Kick Ass, GL, Avengers etc ...)

Great stuff Dogs!

I think it depends on the movie, for me.

Right in between.

I will indulge in spoilers up to a certain point but I won't allow myself to become spoiled all the way.

I will pay attention to smaller, less significant spoilers here and there as they come but generally when it gets close to game time and the really good stuff comes out, like TV spots, novelizations, synopseseseses etc then I start to tune it all out.

If the person says something like HUGE spoiler or GIGANTIC REAVEAL I will skip those too.

I have been at this for about ten years now so I have developed a stategy lol

Multi-That's all well and good from a critical point of view. What about the simple cinematic experience of the first time and letting everything unfold in front of you. Think about stuff like Star Wars or even the Matrix just 10 years ago.

I love to see what the director or writer's vision is as he intended to present it. Then, I can judge/evaluate/critique it better the 2nd or 3rd time around.

Great article!!! I don't like to read entire scripts, but I don't mind looking at little spoilers here and there. Like SHAMAN mentioned, if it's a major spoiler then I will skip it as best I can, but admittedly, sometimes curiosity gets the best of me.

As far as books go...I read the last page of every book I read first. It usually doesn't ruin too much, but it may hint at who survived and such.

I like to have an overall idea on something i'm intrested in - but i do like to be surprised too, so i fall in a greay area in the middle.

I agree with what Shaman said as long as it's not a MAJOR piece in a story that's not going to be figured out till the end, e.g. Lost i don't want to know the full story till it happens, but like you say i'm totaly immersed in the story i allways want more than it gives.

Great article! but who is luke and vader? was he talking about GI joe? no idea!

i read the spoilers, and hate myself after every movie :(
FrankGarret
FrankGarret - 4/8/2010, 1:31 PM
I generally do, since movies these days tend to divulge 60-75% of the story in the trailer anyway.

And quite frankly, originality is so rare these days, everything is so derivative that the best parts to take from anything are usually the parts that can't be spoiled anyway.

valeriesghost - 4/8/2010, 1:56 PM
it depends on if i really care about the movie and characters. i really don't give a shit about scott pilgrem, but if i had read a spoiler for the actual avatar TLAB cartoon, i would have been pissed. i wish i would have read more spoilers about Star Wars I-III, it would have saved me $60 over a few years.
Scarface
Scarface - 4/8/2010, 1:56 PM
I don,t mind spoilers at all as long as the author uses the spoiler alert to notify. Then it becomes each users choice and not the authors choice.
OdinsBeard hit the nail right on the head there is not much any of us don,t know about the comic book characters so it is pretty hard to spoil anything we can,t piece together ourselves with the exception of Origins that is, which was spoiled long before any script was released

I avoid spoilers. In fact, I start to avoid 2nd and 3rd trailers now. There's just too much of the film being shown in trailers. Sherlock Holmes is a perfect example of this. By watching the trailer you know how he fights and where. Who wants to know the location of the final battle and all of that prior to seeing the movie? I don't. It used to be that trailers were short and just teased you a little. Now they show all the good highlights and scenes from the movie, allowing you to get a good idea of how things go down. It's more than I care for, but I am "old school" so I am probably in the minority.

Good stuff, Dogs...well written, and reveals the writer's personal choices without shoving them down our throats. Very few 'personal opinion' articles can do such, and you've hit it right on the head.

Personally, I'm in between. Some movies/stories/games I could care less about reading a spoiler, and they tend to enrich the experience. Others, I'll stay away from (as you said) like the plague. It really depends on the subject at hand, I guess.

Vader is Luke's father? You ba$t@rd!! I was waiting for the reveal...next thing you'll tell me is that Darth Kryat was a former Jedi during the Clone Wars...jeesh!

T2 - I can't believe no one commented on your comment!!! That is prob the best question I have been asked in this forum!!! Wow, what a mind fcuk!!! Well, it begs the question, if you know it will happen before hand, will it still happen? I guess that would depend if the spoiler is a good one or a bad one. AWESOME QUESTION DUDE!!!

p.s. Yeah Dogs, you've done it again bud!!! Great work! Btw, was there ever an article stating who won the superhero March Madness? I saw that Bats was ahead but never saw anything official. I can't wait until you do another one! Keep it up man (insert erectile dysfunction joke here _______)!!!

Ranger14 - we are a dying breed, but you are not alone. I can appreciate a "teaser" of a trailer but for the most part, all of the good parts are often used and abused in trailers now a days, leaving us wanting more, but the reality is, we got gypped!!!

MisterJoshua - I guess when it comes to stuff that I am not too passionate about, I read up on it also. But then again , I could care less what I stumble across because I am not that passionate about it. So it cancels each other out.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I appreciate it.

To each his or her own. I just hate when someONE spoils it for me. I was reading the final Harry Potter book and did not know if Harry died in his battle with Voldemort, and was on a bus and happened to overhear another rider talk about the ending (of which I won't mention so I don't spoil it for anyone that hasn't read it yet). I could have screamed bloody murder!! I still enjoyed the book, but by then it was anti-climactic. That's the worst.

Great article Dogs.

As usual my thoughts on this follow right along with Darths.

I love little spoilers that don't interfere with any surprises in the movie. Just don't let me know any bombshells.

Sometimes I like to be surprised, sometimes I like to know! Depends on the film/show. But like Multi I will tend to want to know the general plot of a big movie that I'm interested in beforehand to see if it sits right with me..not every major thing but just the jist.

Most of the times I care, sometimes I don't. If I think its going to be plot heavy I don't like spoilers but if its all action I don't mind so much. But I feel that most trailers today show wwaaaaaaayyyyy to much. They for some reason show the "oh shit" moment of the movie which kinda defeats the purpose. oh well, whatdyado?

mwmcintyre
mwmcintyre - 4/8/2010, 4:46 PM
T2- good question but I think why no one really responded is because, from a philosophical standpoint, it's been explored quite thoroughly and is almost a cliche at this point. Look at the old Greek stuff involving the Oracle, almost everything was a self-fulfilling prophecy(see Oedipus). Not trying to rag on you, just sayin'. It would be tempting to peek, but I'm not sure if I would or not.
McLovin
McLovin - 4/8/2010, 4:50 PM
mwmcintyre - good point, but it's still fun to debate on (I think). Say curiosity got the best of you and you find out how you die (like the cyclops in that movie Krull) and it's a plane accident. Would you ever step foot in another plane?
