Doc Savage Returns to Film & Comics

Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze, is not only returning to comics in the form of a Batman/Doc savage mini, but a continuing DC series as well. Reported today by Aint It Cool News is the fact that the writing/producing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing a new movie version of the character.

The script is being written by Shane Black, the man who redefined the action genre with 1987's Lethal Weapon, among his other films. Writes Harry Knowles after talking to Black, "When I asked him what he was working on, he shocked me with the revelation that he was going to be writing a script for DOC SAVAGE, which Orci & Kurtzman (those STAR TREK, EAGLE EYE, TRANSFORMERS guys) were producing.

"I did inquire if they were modernizing the character. I asked this with dread in my belly, and Shane passed the test by saying the character can not be separated from the 30s. This is correct. Right now, he is preparing to write the script. He has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. It will be an original DOC SAVAGE story that attempts to encapsulate the feeling of the whole collection of Lester Dent's work. We then talked quite a bit about George Pal's wildly off-base version. Frankly, I'm absolutely thrilled that Orci & Kurtzman handed this one off to SHANE BLACK - he understands how to write dialogue for MEN in films - and having him pen a new adventure for Clark Savage Jr and his awesome 5 partners in adventure and enterprise... Monk, Ham, Long Tom, Johnny and Renny... well, it just makes me hold my breath for a director announcement. Let's pray this gets handled just right!"

He was a "pulp" hero from the 1930s and '40s created by Lester Dent. For full info, go to this Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doc_Savage

There was one movie made featuring Doc Savage starring Ron Ely (he played Tarzan too). It came out in 1975. There used to be Doc Savage magazines back in the day.

Fantastic! Finally Doc Savage and is amazing five
are getting a script and it's being written by some
very competent screenwriters! Well, I'll be
"unmitigatedly discombobulated", as Johnny was always
saying,

I hope they take it serious and make the movie realistic
and not campy like the first one! I'm really looking
forward to this one! Doc Savage was my first great hero
and I've got every last one of his paperback books but
unfortunately I don't have any of the original pulps!

Ok, just a few things. Don't know much about Doc Savage. He's known as the man of bronze, right? Is that a metaphor for being tough, does he unbreakable skin, or is he just tan?

Also, the widows peak. What up wid dat? You can have a pronounced widow's peak and it looks cool. The images of him where the artist went overboard look bizarre, like he might not be human. Is that something that defines him? Am I going to have to stare at some actor's hairy forehead for an hour and a half?

And why can't he ever find a durable shirt?

Remember in the 60's when everytime they showed Nick Fury with his shirt all ripped up? They were rippin off ol Doc Savage with that..

He is human, there was some reason why his skin was dark, but nothing special, just can't really remember the details. Not superhuman, just really smart and strong.

Some of the early stories were CRAZY. i remember reading something where Doc and crew would capture some criminals and send them to a sanitarium in upstate NY to get lobotomies so they wouldn't be criminals!! Oh, and they didn't use real guns, they had some crazy sleep-pill-shooting sunmachineguns. Dont kill the bad guys, just scramble their brains!!
I am looking forward to this, there is NO WAY they'll keep the really wierd stuff from the original stories....

Doc Savage is stronger than a normal human being and is a scientist. He was created in the the 1930's. He battled mad scientists and evil organizations whose goals were to take over or destroy the world.

I believe in the 1960's his stories from the 1930's were being reprinted. On the covers of the reprints, they colored his skin bronze. Not sure if he was bronze in the originals.

Didn't Doc also have an arctic retreat that he called his "fortress of solitude" which Superman ripped off?

Sounds like Ozymandius may have been partially based on Savage.

SkunkApe1 - 10/26/2009, 3:23 AM
The Doc Savage books are awesome...pick them up ! The crew that he runs with was inspiration for the Dirk Pitt novels.

I believed he was called the man of bronze because of his time in the jungle / Africa...constantly on Safari.

Arnold Schwarzanegger was supposed to make a movie / start franchise, but never did.

Most people aren't aware of the Doc.

Do the movie right and skip the re-boot.

Superman was based on Doc Savage with his Fortress of
Solitude in the Arctic and all! Doc is the Man of Bronze,
Supes is the Man of Steel! The family of the Superman
creator is so fond of suing so much maybe the family of
Lester Dent (Doc's writer) should sue Schuster's family
for ripping off Lester Dent and Doc Savage!

Here's a pic of Lester Dent, he was a real adventurer in
his own right! He wrote under the pen-name, Kenneth
Robeson.

Yep Superman was based on Doc Savage and Ozymandius was based
on Superman! Plagiarism, plagiarism, plagiarism!
Everybody rips off everybody else! How does anyone
keep it all straight! Sheesh!

Skunkape@ it wasn't Africa where Doc got the tan it was
South America! Although he did go to Africa on his
Adventures.

SkunkApe1-- I used to read a lot of Dirk Pitt novels. He's pretty cool. What did you think of that Sahara movie? bleeeugh!
DDD
DDD - 10/26/2009, 6:37 PM
I was mistaken about Lester Dent creating Doc Savage.
I forgot but....
Doc was created by the editor of the publishers of Doc!
Dent was hired to write the individual stories but he created
almost all the original stories so he did
write a lot of Doc Savage's characters and
characteristics.
